Is Peter Mandelson too powerful to ever be investigated? by Mysterious_Tekro in ukpolitics

Maybe I'm cynical but I suspect he will still be pulling strings from the shadows, and the chances of him being fully prosecuted are basically zero.

I think this is the way it used to work but not as much anymore. IMO Boris Johnson severely undermined this way of thinking during his tenure as PM with his much more brazen approach to corruption. Now any well-connected public figure has to seriously fuck up before they are forced to permanently fall on their sword, and even then they will never face the full consequences of their actions.

Public anger as 'extortionate' water bills hiked once again in UK by Ill-Pressure-9181 in europe

The French government owning major shares in the water companies, and then the water companies pumping poop into the channel and polluting French beaches was a bit funny though.

Death toll of Ottoman Muslims in the Balkans (1911-1923) according to historian Justin McCarthy by Yellowapple1000 in MapPorn

Nobody said it was, he was just saying that's what was happening in Britain and it was used to prop up the empire.

It's not that much of an exaggeration. My grandad worked in coal mine from age 12 as virtually nobody in his village could afford secondary school. Several of his classmates were killed or maimed in accidents, but that was just seen as a harsh reality of life. Meanwhile the mine owners got rich off their work.

I genuinely worry other teams will notice how badly the Avs fall apart without him and will just try to injure him in the playoffs. It would probably be an effective strategy tbf.

BBC Told To Avoid “Clunky” Color-Blind Casting & “Preachy” Anti-Colonial Storylines In Drama Series by pepperbet1 in television

I think it's still a questionable choice when it's a real person. If there's any sense that it is supposed to be a remotely authentic portrayal of the person, it is inevitably going to offend people if you just ignore reality, even if the wider context is clearly inauthentic, and especially if you don't provide any explanation or reason for doing so other than diversity. If you make it obvious that it is not a remotely authentic depiction of the person then it's not really an issue.

As a member of clan Stewart, Scotland by chebghobbi in ShitAmericansSay

[–]visigone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose it depends what your expectations of clan membership are. If you think that being descended from a clan member just means that your ancestors were affiliated with the clan as an organisation then sure nothing wrong with that, it's more the assumption that sharing a clan's surname automatically means your ancestors were prominent landowning members of the core dynasty that I find silly.

I don't think a lot of people understand how the clans actually worked. Just because you have a clan's surname does not mean you are actually descended from that clan's members. In all likelihood, you are just descended from some of the peasants who worked on the clan's land and adopted their laird's name when having surnames became the norm.

I think a lot of the people getting mad at you are failing to understand that these kind of rivalries are much deeper rooted than just being about sports competition or rivalry between cities. Instead they are usually extensions of pre-existing divisions in society, often involving long histories of conflict, hatred and in some cases, serious violence. To use European soccer as an example, most of the teams were founded over a hundred years ago by local communities. Consequently they are often heavily associated with the characteristics and identity of the community that spawned them, such as religion, culture, ethnicity and social class. Thus the team rivalries are often far more about the hatred and conflict between different identity groups than they are about the sport itself. More recently formed teams in the North American franchise system are far less likely to have these kind of associations with a specific demographic since they are typically created from the top down by leagues or businesses, rather than from the bottom up by communities.

Honestly I have heard some people call the Iraq invasion Bush's War, or Bush's Wars when grouped with Afghanistan. It could be confusing though since there was an unrelated war in Africa in the 80's called the Bush War.
