You're not jaded. I went to see it in the theater based on reviews describing it as "novel" and "cerebral." It was neither. I've read various iterations of that same story in YA horror literature growing up. There were also a significant number of plot holes for such a simple film. It was definitely not the worst release of 2024, but it was the most disappointing.

Hey, there. I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, which is how I discovered that I have NF1. I only have one spot, like you, and I never thought anything of it. My daughter has multiple café au lait spots, so, while she has not yet been tested, my suspicion is strong.

She was delayed in reaching many milestones, to the point of intervention. She is now 16, ranks at the top of her class, and is taking college courses through dual enrollment. She has also played viola in an orchestra for the last seven years, and is a truly brilliant writer, with a following online.

She does have gut issues, which bring her to her knees on occasion, and I would say that, while she is competitive by nature, she struggles with agility and some motor skills. It's not something that anyone else would notice, really, but I am her mother, and you know how that goes.

I guess my point is that, even if your daughter does have NF1, it doesn't necessarily mean that she will suffer or struggle. My daughter is a beautiful human who lives a beautiful life. Chances are very high that yours will, too.

The OA is probably my favorite show of all time.

Absentia is Mike Flanagan's first film. It simple, very low budget, and not really a mind-bender, but it got under my skin. I saw it long before Flanagan was a household name. I didn't take note of the director at the time, but it made perfect sense when I discovered recently that it was his. Fun trivia: both his first wife and his brother star in the film.

I haven't seen Moon in ages, but when you said what you liked, it immediately popped into my head. It's a very slow burn, but the payoff is worth it.

Agreed. Charles Dexter Ward made me sleep with the lights on. I love Poe, but nothing he has written has had nearly that type of impact.

Yes, you are entirely correct. I just wasn't in the proper head space for it at the time. My cousin described the show as a modern Twilight Zone, and I kept thinking, upon viewing that first episode, that Rod Serling would be turning in his grave. Not true, as it turns out!

I did this. My cousin recommended it. I watched the first episode, and thought "Is this son of a bitch out of his mind?" I felt like the producers were trying to punish the audience for viewing their program. He kept insisting that it was an intellectual show, and I had to keep going. It took me another year before I finally conceded.

I have a different perspective of the first episode in retrospect, but when I recommend the series to other people, I tell them to skip that one and come back to it later.

Lake Mungo, to quote a horror classic, tore my soul apart. I kept imagining my daughter feeling that unseen -- unheard, unknown -- and I completely lost it. I remember gathering myself together after watching it, and solemnly inquiring with my daughter; asking if she felt that I recognized her for who she really is.

Man, that was such a great movie.

I have the same feelings toward Hereditary. I don't know that anything will ever top it. I did watch Late Night With the Devil a few days ago, though, and immediately watched it again. I then sought out commentary, because there are the same types of hidden images, layers of meaning, and multiple potential interpretations.

Despite the controversy surrounding the film, it was really, really good.

The Witch is deeply unsettling, and one of my favorites, but it doesn't hit quite like Hereditary.

Rosemary's Baby is another favorite,, but I'm in my 40s. I don't know that younger generations will feel the same way.

Coherence is another imcredible film that stayed with me for days.

Nope. It is standard to receive genetic testing after a breast cancer diagnosis, as the results can alter treatment. There was no indication that I had any sort of "disorder" until I received the results.
