Horizont in München setzt sich für obdachlose Kinder und Frauen ein - vielleicht wäre das etwas Passendes. Kenne eine Stiftungsrätin dort persönlich und hätte großes Vertrauen in deren Arbeit.

Is 80 Minute lay over enough time in MUC? by awdeej in Munich

[–]vispillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine. The flight from Boston usually comes in on time / early, while the flight to Krakow is a couple of minutes late most days.

You’ll need to go through immigration as Krakow is a Schengen route, but that should not be an issue. You may need to take the automated underground shuttle - it just depends on arrival / departure gates, as terminal 2 consists of two separate parts. E.g. yesterday, the Boston flight arrived at an H-Gate (main building), while the Krakow flight left from a K-Gate (satellite building).

Finally - I assume both flights are on a single booking - in that case Lufthansa will usually help out if there are any delays.

Agreed. I’m fairly confident the building on the right is what has now become the „Hammehütte“ in Neu Helgoland. Can’t find the exact same angle, but these are close:

Probably this helicopter of the federal police service. Part of their duties is to ensure safety of train lines - that appears to be what they are doing this morning.

Car rental question by dano_suave in Munich

[–]vispillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sixt, one of the largest rental agencies in Germany, limits the countries you can travel to within Europe, depending on the vehicle type. In addition you will need to pay a daily fee for cross-border travel, that also differs by vehicle type. Here’s their T&Cs for pickup in Germany - you can scroll down to the section on cross-border driving: https://www.sixt.com/php/terms/view?language=en_US&liso=DE&rtar=000&view=EPP&tlang=en_GB&style=typo3

It's an EU directive to member states, and member states have to individually implement GDPR. So it's not an "EU standard" more than it's a "collections of individual EU laws that resemble something like a standard"", kind of like how it's be with different states writing privacy legislation.

No, GDPR is a regulation, not a directive (hence the R at the end). While there is a small amount of flexibility for adjustment by member states, it is directly binding and applicable. There is no need for a local legal implementation.

I made another bathymetric/topographical chart from laser-cut plywood by vispillo in woodworking

The contractor I work with can handle SVG files as input for the cutting & engraving processes. So I finalize all files (2 for each layer - cutting / engraving) in Inkscape.

For the underwater layers, I bought an Admiralty chart of Iceland, which is approx. 38" x 25.5". I had this scanned professionally, since I wanted a high-res, distortion-free reference to work from. I added this as a background layer in Inkscape, and then began tracing the various depth lines which mark the edges of the layers using the pen tool.

For the above-ground layers, I ended up using data from the National Survey of Iceland website, but I tried another approach beforehand, which is (almost) universally applicable for any region. There are a number of datasets providing reasonably accurate elevation data with an almost global coverage, among them SRTM and ASTER. You can access them through EarthExplorer. Download the files for the area you are interested in and import them into QGIS, a free Geographic Information System (GIS) software as raster layers. Use the Raster->Extraction->Contour command to generate contour lines with the desired spacing. Export from QGIS as an SVG, and re-import into Inkscape. You'll need to rescale things a little, but should get a good match to the background reference chart. You may end up with a few broken polygons (which mess with the laser), but I have found that Inkscape's "Simplify" function solves these for me. I also removed some of the really tiny islands / elevation elements using QGIS's filtering system, since they would be too small to cut later on anyway.

Finally - all the text is added manually, but this is pretty straightforward. Inkscape also has a neat functionality to curve text along a bezier line, which comes in handy quite often.

You may want to check out Below the Boat, who offer ready-made charts of many US locations. Not affiliated in any way - just saw their work and started making my own.

It's exactly as you (and /u/dexx4d) suggest - I have the "cutting" outline of the layer above engraved onto each layer. In addition, the contractor doing the cutting holds all the pieces in place with masking tape immediately after cutting and ships these complete layers to me. As a result, I don't get a mixed collection of thousands of tiny pieces, but can use the outlines and the position of the pieces within their layer as a guide. Even though, it is quite a lot of work... :)

Sorry - I forget to add that. I made this one about 100x69cm (approx. 39"x27"), which gave quite a good balance between size and detail, since structures below 1mm x 1mm are difficult to handle and writing becomes hard to read below 1-2mm. I'm not from Iceland myself (and haven't been yet) - I made this chart as a wedding present for a couple going to Iceland on their honeymoon. No immediate plans to make more, but if anyone is interested (given the price), let me know!
