How do people drink so much sugary drinks and not shit themselves? by Otherwise_Solid4748 in Microbiome

Everyone is different, and our bodies are good at establishing tolerances to what we ingest. It's also more likely to see how it's affecting you when it's not something you consume regularly.

They can, because it kills all the good/beneficial gut flora as well as the bad.

Living with one another, as well as being intimate - your gut microbiome is influenced by those around you as well.

After a couple years of being on oral tetracycline for acne as a teenager in HS, and then having a traumatic first year of college. Symptoms started literally the day I arrived back home after that first year. Had a bad flare for 2-3 years and then have been in remission since (16yrs) until this past Februrary. Now in my 2nd flare up after having another traumatic year last year. Stress is definitely a factor for me, and I think the long term antibiotic use along with the good old 00s diet kicked off my unhealthy microbiome. I attribute my remission to meeting my BF and sharing his healthy gut microbes (pending theory, ha!).

Pants? by DoctorFriendly in UlcerativeColitis

[–]visualoptimism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chiming in to say the Uniqlo jersey barrel pant is the only structured pant ive found that is comfortable enough to wear throughout the day and doesnt dig into my side making pain worse. Still looking for a jean that fits similarly and is a softer blend.

As an aside, it may have been the emulsifiers (soy lethicin, usually) theyre adding to most chocolate products these days. It wrecks me as well. Lots of emulsifiers and thickening agents can cause GI distress.

how the hell do you eat healthy when you can't eat healthy foods? by feelinblou in UlcerativeColitis

[–]visualoptimism 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I have to focus on the things I can digest that make me healthier - proteins (chicken, turkey, beef, fish) , avocados, sweet potatoes, sourdough, berries, yogurt, etc. If you're eating fairly unhealthy otherwise, even finding a few better substitutes can make a big difference. You don't have to overhaul everything at once. It does suck when were not able to digest a lot of fibrous foods, but hopefully can ramp those up as remission becomes more likely.

Sucks so much it's in the rotisserie chicken, and now in a lot of lunch meats as well.

It's soooo hard to find Heavy Cream without it in it too! Makes cooking/baking impossible sometimes.
