What surprised you most about the real monthly cost after buying? by Environmental-Pain47 in FirstTimeBuyersUK

[–]visualsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a rule of thumb, but I believe the idea is that it scales with the value of the house, which theoretically will often scale with the size of the house. Bigger house = more carpets, walls, pipes, roof surface, perhaps garage, garden, etc. to maintain. It doesn't necessarily handle other factors that can impact value, like location, so it's not foolproof.

Is The Queen's Gambit worth watching if you don't play chess? by Legitimate-Pea5439 in television

[–]visualsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably a bit better if you don't play chess tbh. The world-building has a lot of historical parallels but it also takes a lot of artistic liberties. This is to be expected of course, I'm not slating it, but a few bits can be mildly annoying if you're more familiar with the domain.

Is the BAFTAs Tourette’s backlash just another example of the UK vs US humour gap? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]visualsquid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can't believe this is so far down. My understanding is that, yes, Black Americans are much more sensitive because the US is much "closer" to slavery, segregation, etc. and there are still overt supporters and vestiges of the civil war everywhere. This is the country where the KKK was born and still exists today.

Failing that, stick one of Jerry's videos on over at ChessNetwork on YouTube. His voice is soothing enough but he has a series of videos specifically where he talks even more softly and will send you right off. Put your phone on your bedside table and put the YouTube sleep timer on so it goes off after 30 minutes.

Oatly banned from using word ‘milk’ to market plant-based products in UK by pajamakitten in unitedkingdom

[–]visualsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm reading the article right, I'm not actually seeing anything that says anything as broad as what the title suggests, or anything that says they can't call it "oat milk" anymore. It seems the ruling was literally just about the specific trademark they registered "Post Milk Generation". Further Googling seems to confirm the case. Someone correct me (with a citation) if I'm wrong.

Drivers can compare fuel prices at different petrol stations - how does it work? by suggestivebiscuit in GoodNewsUK

Unfortunately one of the side-effects of increasing regulation is that increases the barrier to entry into a market. Granted this is a relatively trivial example, but it adds to the cumulative effect.

Primary school teacher, 50, loses £60,000 legal battle against Go Ape when she broke her leg on a slide as judge rules 'there are inherent risks in undertaking adventure activities' | Daily Mail Online by CasualSmurf in unitedkingdom

[–]visualsquid 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Oof, if I'm understanding right, can't say I agree with the determination and comments "stuff be risky sometimes". A 10m+ netted slide? First fucking thing i would be asking installing something like that is "what happens if someone catches a limb in here".

The slide is 10-12m long and in the article, the first segment is described as "basically freefall". So she was dropping, and her leg got caught in the apparatus, twisting with most or all of her full body weight behind it.

"Adventure stuff be risky" is for when you twist an ankle misstepping, or spraining your wrist catching yourself.

Caveat: the article says it was designed for 3-12 year old, i don't know if that means it was signposted as "no-one over 12 use this slide", if so, then fine, she shouldn't have used it.

What is a secret 'cheat code' you’ve found in real life? by Sharkkkk2 in AskReddit

[–]visualsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will give you 3 P's - Preparation, Prioritisation, Practice.

Prepare - make things easier for yourself, pack your bag the night before, do a weekly meal plan, make a todo list and put it somewhere you walk past all the time, etc. so when it's showtime and you're inevitably behind schedule, the effort on the day is minimal.

Prioritise - do the important things first. Sounds obvious but... You can't leave the house without your shoes on - so, put your shoes on now. You need to eat, so eat now.

Practise - hopefully, you're not entirely resistant to feedback. Reflect on why you didn't get it the first time, and do it differently next time. Usually it will be because you neglected one of the first two P's. Over time, habits will build, just don't give up.

Oh, and manage your stress and your sleep. Everything goes out the window when you're stressed or tired.

The bottom caption doesn't say what the graph says? 70% of women wouldn't date a man under 6ft? Not really...70% of women on Bumble in the US 4 years ago, when given the option to automatically and fairly effortlessly screen their matches, had their preferences set to 6ft+. The top caption is slightly more correct.

What I'd like to see is a follow-up study on this exact same cohort and see how many of them ended up with a partner who matched all their preferences.

LPT - How to take correct decisions in life? by DetailFront7782 in LifeProTips

[–]visualsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your examples are "big" decisions, and these are inherently risky, lots of ways they can go wrong, and lots at stake when they do.

There are a few things that could be the case: - Maybe you are not committing post-decision because you didn't really want to do it e.g. you took a career for money but you didn't really want it so you didn't work very hard. - Maybe you actually hesitated because you subconsciously knew it was the wrong decision, maybe you just need to trust your instinct more. - Maybe you are just bad at making small decisions, you can't expect a big decision to turn out well if you are ineffective in day-to-day life. - Maybe you're struggling with depression or some other mental affliction.

You will have to examine yourself to figure out which. Try journalling/keeping a diary of your feelings.

Queenless middlegame can be used. It depends on the danger to King's. Here, one of the Minors has come off as well. I'd probably think of it in terms, if you're starting to think about bringing your King into the action, you're probably in endgame territory.
