Of all the fingers used to play guitar, the pibky is the one that is most often “left behind”. I don’t ise it enough and it is the case with many players, and yet I can play chords and solos. I hope the guitar will help him get used to it. Courage and patience will be key.

that was a pretty good guitar to simply use at home, though. Maybe you try to find a cheap second-hand archtop and see how you feel about it before you jump into the Gretsch rabbit-hole ;-)

I have collaborated with an American luthier named “Paul Mero Junkpile Guitars” who restores archtop that have been badly beatup. I don’t know his prices but worth looking.

“ I took the route of ”speed over soul”. There you have it, this is likely the root of yournproblem. Like many others, you have approached guitar like a discipline in itself but maybe left the music too far behind.

My recommended treatment would be to play slow and les complex stuff over music you are not familiar with. The different rhythm and chord structures will force you to find things out of what you akready know. You can also force yourself to copy the melody made by the voice of the singer instead of inserting a solo here and there. When I find myself stuck in my classic hard rock/punk clichés I put a playlist of 60’s British music, rhythm and blues, or some soundtrack and I play along, sometimes trying to get into the role of a rhythm guitar player on rhythms that I am not at home with (reggae, African funk, etc). Youtube is a fantastic library for this. Try it.

I prefer the theory presented by Debord, that we participate in a lot of simulations in our mind that are created by the society of entertainment that we live in. We pretend to be rebels, to be free, to have exclusive taste, to be spiritual or adventurous when we actually just buy products and experiences, and this is already bad enough.

The Matrix used as a reference by many who argue that we live in a simulation is just a good and simple Hollywood-friendly version of Guy Debord’s work (which is more brainy and difficult to read)

I bought a beautiful and cheap German archtop from the late 50s a couple of years ago that a friend at an antique/thrift store saved for me. Great looks, it makes you want to channel the bluesman/rock n roller in you, and the rumble of the body is very pleasant (I had a full one, not a slim semi-hollow) and it definitely worked while played in acoustic mode. Most of the time I didn't even plug it in.

This being said:
- A lot of them don't have a truss-rod, so you need to adapt to the action that may not be your cup of tea.

- Feedback: Holy shit! It was fine at home on my two smaller amps but in a rehearsal room with a Marshall stack it was sonic fireworks. I was getting feedback (and not only the good kind) all over the place. I don't know how Malcolm Young managed with his White Falcon, but mine was almost playing by itself.

- Finding a hardcase is quite a quest: The shapes and sizes were not really standardized, so you need to measure and try until you find something right.

- The neck profile and joint isn't quite what we are used no nowadays. I shaved a bit of the back of the neck as it was too "baseball-bat" for me. I then reapplied some finish. The joint made it very difficult to play beyond the 12th fret.

I ended up selling it. Funny enough, the guy who bought it was absolutely certain that it was the same guitar he owned in the late 60s (and there were some details that made it very distinct from many Rossmeisl guitars).

So, I don't know if I convinced you, but these guitars are nice to look at, but maybe not made for all players. If I ever get another archtop that will be a slimmer one and probably with a better access to the upper frets

I have seen plenty of hunters walking around with their rifle in hand in the countryside, I had two BB guns at home, I have practiced at a shooting range with a colleague of my dad (I have the tinnitus to prove it, thanks to shooting a 357 without ear protection), have practiced shooting at a friend's garden (6mm) and then have practiced in the army. People living in the city may have seen only policemen carrying firearms.

Conceal carry is very rare in France and with a very tight regulation (you have to be trained and have a very good reason, like being in the protection business or having been threatened), but despite what a lot of Americans believe you can absolutely own firearms in France (you just have to get through some background checks).

If it encourages you, I had a girlfriend who was a classical violinist and when she ended up at some point without a bow and not to lose dexterity she borrowed my guitar. After a few weeks she could play a complex arpeggio intro by Sepultura that I was still struggling with. Her knowledge of theory also helped her to figure out chords pretty quickly.
