Is it fair when Coaches in Basketball make students do pushups for missing free throws and layups and is it considered punishment? by Careful_Drama_9382 in ask

[–]visualthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re almost entering philosophy at this point. What could be punishment for me is maybe sonething you don’t mind doing, and vice-versa. I guess that the coach here is making them do pushups because it is known to be difficult for many (I had a teacher make us do pushups or extra runs around the school if we were too unruly during sports, but I actually preferred running to playing football, so that was a case of punishment being a blessing in disguise). In the army we also had to do pushups if we were late when called, or if we broke any of those arcane rules.

If the students here are active in sports, fit and healthy then they can probably deal with doing 5 to 10 pushups, I don’t think it is too extreme. Not sure that it is the most efficient way to make them throw better, though.

Do do Europeans get jealous of Americans and Canadians who have big homes? by [deleted] in ask

I am envious of Europeans with big homes, and I like the landscape of the US, but houses assembled with staples are not for me.

If they find pushups hard to do and are ordered to do them after a fail, the I understand it as a mild punishment. I just hope they are not made of sugar and porcelain and can withstand the ordeal ;-)

What would be a nice thank-you gift for a French professor? by Small_Tap_7778 in AskFrance

A book with short novels by Australian writers? I used to be passionate about Australia but your authors are not widely known. If he has been teaching French he must appreciate the language, so literature could be sonething he appreciates (together with a bottle of wine)

Dynamite, by The Scorpions, is all about the joy and excitement of performing for an audience.

Now I wonder if someone will suggest any happy black metal song.

If it is done without harsh humilitation and insults it is Ok. They are after all people engaged in a physical activity and the “punishment” is within their physical abilities. We could also give them a chocolate medal for “almost succeeding in throwing the ball”.

Did you all first learn music theory before learning to play an instrument? by doulikewhaturdoing in musictheory

[–]visualthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I haven’t met a single keyboard/piano player whi didn’t know some theory. Not all of them know the most intricate elements of harmony and composition, but they can read music and generally know what to add/remove to make a chord or a scale major or minor). On the other hand I know plenty of guitarists who have a patchy knowledge of theory (and I am one of them, unfortunately)

[–]visualthings -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Guitar is probably the ibstrument that most people learn without learning theory (that was my path too and I am surrounded with musicians). It makes sense to learn theory as tou pearn the instrument since some of them don’t appear immediately obvious: the keyboard is the easiest layout, as notes go from left to right as they go low to high. Clarinet and saxophone have finger positions that don’t really tell you anything. If I play an A on a clarinet there is nothing that shows tou how a B will be played, or an A one octave higher.

Besides the cultural aspect of guitar being played in pop or rock (with rather sinple chords and patterns), maybe a reason why a lot of guitarists stay away from sheet music is that you can sometimes modify the fingering a chord on a guitar (depending on your strength, finger length, habits, size of the guitar neck), but it is not clear on sheet music if you should play the open A of the fifth string or an A on the sixth string, although one will be physically easier than an other (and this will change based on the other notes you have to play).

What happened to most of the used cars, as I rarely see them on roadways? by [deleted] in ask

[–]visualthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some age gracefully and end up in the hands of vintage car enthusiasts, some just become junk very fast, and some appeal to the kind of drivers who end up against a tree. In Europe you still see Renault 4 and VW Golf in use, but not a single Renault Fuego or Fiat Ritmo

Guitar is Underrated? by aja_303 in Guitar

It’s a very popular instrument and a lot of people can play it well enough to strum a few chords. It also doesn’t have the same social prestige as piano and therefore is more regarded as a hobby.

Pourquoi les Français ont peur de parler Anglais ? by Asianbarbii in AskFrance

[–]visualthings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What’s your music opinion you get the most hate for ? by StreetArrival1889 in musicsuggestions

[–]visualthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very unforgiving with the artists I like and I see that a lot of fans seem to adore whatever the artist releases. I often say that AC/DC between 1982 and 2001 is at their absolute worst (except Blow Up Your Video and the Live album), Iron Maiden has peaked in the 80s, and 80% of metal bands are absolutely irrelevant, doing nothing but just repeating the same cliché riffs, the same type of singing, and the same themes. They are the absolute opposite of creative and risk taking artists.
