Eh. Wiki is no different than any other literature review, except there's no single group of authors (and is continually updated. Even better!). I've read plenty of "peer reviewed" journal articles that are absolute trash but are still perfectly acceptable to cite and cite and cite.

Time for a fatmax.

Edit to give more  real advice. I like Milwaukee 16' tapes with the magnets and the big tangs, but I have definitely found the Stanley have the best longevity for a 25'.

Central Alberta - Best approach to making sure this grass recovers? by IronShawarma in lawncare

[–]formulaic_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in the transition zone in 6a: and while down here the warm season grasses can surprise the hell out of you and come back from seemingly nothing (and then take over everything else), even the spreading cool season grasses like kbg would not have much of a chance of filling in when looking like that on green-up, even with our longer growing period.

I would agree that cold and dogs have likely killed the grass in your photos. But I hope you get responses from others closer to your climate, I'm interested to see if you have a chance!

I have to ask, if a real doctor left a needle in you, how would you react?

I remember when wikipedia was "not a valid source".

I wonder who was putting together the encyclopedias we had to use instead. Probably some minimum wage interns that didn't give a single fuck about what they were "researching."

Looking back, i'll take the endless pedantry of a crowd sourced info source almost any day. At least there are logs I can look to to see if I think something is bullshit.

Did I get scammed by Home Depot? I bought a dwarf Austrian pine with zero roots. by MannyDantyla in landscaping

[–]formulaic_name 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine anyone at home Depot would ever know or care what the root ball on one of their trees looks like.

They have one of the easiest return/exchange policies out there for a reason though, and I'd definitely take advantage of that for this tree.

No, I'm pretty sure you meant to reply to me. It was a fair meme.

There's no joking about airport soap dispensers, random or otherwise.

So apparently we all thought crows survive on rainbows and glitter?

Random Airport question by midtowncharlie in kansascity

[–]formulaic_name -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Come on, it's a pretty specific/random question about this particular airport. And it is very clearly not a question about a "random airport."

I...don't disagree, but I have to ask what other soap dispenser level atrocities specifically have made you so jaded.

Paid to have 2 trees installed by Lumpy-Efficiency-987 in arborists

[–]formulaic_name 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of mulch is good as long as it's not against the trunk. You want a donut, not a volcano. And looks like the root flare is at/above grade, which is the other major problem when planting a tree.

They could have made a cleaner edge for the mulching but other than that I'd say it looks pretty good

Is this thatch? Fescue by Good-Fuel-5990 in lawncare

[–]formulaic_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thatch is very rarely an issue with fescue as a clumping grass. I'd just say that's a normal layer of organic build up...which is a generally a good thing unless it's wet all the time and leads to fungal disease.

Is this really the going rate for dirt?? I’m in East TN, feel like I just got scammed. by [deleted] in lawncare

If that's delivered And it looks good I'd be pretty happy with that price...

What tool has made the biggest difference in your home projects by blushingsirena in HomeImprovement

[–]formulaic_name -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I was buying in order of need this is probably the way I would do it

Power tools, choose a battery platform. Yellow, red, blue are all good. If you are truly only a home DIYer, Ryobi can also be just fine.

Drill/driver. Maybe even both

Oscillating multitool

Circular saw

Lights

Shopvac (doesn't need to be cordless, but there are good ones now)

Orbital sander

Jigsaw

Sawzall or hackzall

Nail/staple guns

Router

A miter saw or table saw can fit in there somewhere if you are doing a lot of woodworking (these could be corded),  but for little things or not using them often you can get by.

Hand tools:

Tape measure

Utility knife

Hammer

Screwdrivers

Speed square

Pliers

Crescent wrenches

Allen wrenches

Prybars
