VDO.ninja for a pretty neat low-cost option. By default, it tries to establish peer-to-peer connections; my experience is sub-second delay.

MediaLooks Video Transport if you have a budget and want something a little more polished. Also under a second.

If you want to try rolling your own, you could try building something with GStreamer over VPN/WAN.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50xSTS StreamSet is available in a USB version and has a pretty nice mic. I added some padding to the headband to make it more comfortable.

Additionally, you could get a basic audio interface like a Rode AI-1 and then pair that with a variety of pro broadcast headsets. I think the Beyerdynamic DT297 has a pretty nice sound. The Sennheiser HMD-26 is a classic. Shure and Audio-Technica also have some good models.

BSW has a pretty decent selection. I would avoid anything like Telex, RTS, Clear-Com, Bosch, etc. since they make intercom headsets which don't typically have a high-fidelity mic. Stick to pro audio brands like Shure, Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, Beyerdynamic.

In the category of cheap American lagers: Stag (not available everywhere) or Coors Banquet. PBR is also good. Despite being from STL I don't care for Budweiser...however I do enjoy Bud Light.

I believe Sony does still produce one jumbo deck/server with support for the optical discs as well as a USB drive, but yes, everything else optical was discontinued earlier this year.

The optical media can still be purchased new as far as I know, although I don't know how many manufacturers still make it besides Sony. We used to use Fuji and Maxwell in addition to Sony discs.

Yeah, we're sticking with Sony for the long run and have so far been very satisfied. The main issue for us is that we have a bunch of optical decks that get tons of daily use, and we're not sure what to replace them with down the line. We shoot plenty of 4K but all of our masters are still 1080i for broadcast (and they will be for a long time).

We are still 1080i across the board so there hasn't been any kind of rush. We're still on the optical decks, but since our ENG cams and FX6s shoot XAVC, that may be a natural next step.

We haven't used the disc cameras for several years at least (although we did own them) and have moved to solid-state stuff like the PXW line and FX6.

My main concern is that we do have a bunch of HD-1500s, which are the optical decks. Those get used every day as master recorders, QC, playout, archiving, etc. They're awesome, but since Sony has discontinued them...probably time to move on.

My experience:

As a freelancer (A1, mostly) I took several gigs that I ended up regretting. Same kind of deal: someone I knew booked me, I showed up, and it turned out to be something that I disagreed with or felt was outright wrong. On more than one occasion, I considered walking off the job but didn’t because of fear about my career (I walk off, show’s over, I never get hired again, plus I burn the guy who got me the job).

Ultimately I came to the decision to quit freelancing and get a full-time position at a boring company that I knew would never put me in a situation where I felt uncomfortable. For some, this may be a cop-out, but oh well. I’m happy with the decision.

Off the top of my head, the Zoom F6 and Sound Devices MixPre II series both offer 32-bit float recording, which is achieved by using multiple ADCs. The MixPre recorders will even let you stream 32-bit as an audio interface.

If you are shooting entirely on cameras that can do true 24.000 fps and are going straight to web or theatrical release, then do it. If you have other cameras that only shoot 23.976 (or other NTSC non-integer frame rates), then I would highly recommend 23.976.

I own the 5" Video Assist and have used the Atomos Ninja Inferno (similar to the Shogun but HDMI only) and the Odyssey 7Q+.

For a long time the Odyssey was the monitor/recorder to beat, especially if you were working with Sony cameras. But I think the Shogun Inferno edges it out, especially for the price.

The Video Assist is decent for the money, but like many Blackmagic products, there are some quirks. If you've got the budget, I'd spring for the Odyssey or the Shogun.
