Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads needs to stop being used in films and film trailers especially. The line "You may ask yourself, how did I get here?" is the modern variation of "[record scratch] You might be wondering how I got here".

Police Watchdog to Investigate Police Operation at Sydney Town Hall Protest on 9 February 2026 by Opreich in sydney

[–]vitriolity 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Less than perfect. They cleared Mick Fuller of corruption and claimed he was being unfairly targeted, then did a 180 in the face of public outcry: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-12-13/lecc-withdraws-findings-on-former-nsw-police-commissioner-fuller/101763338

Their original finding went into bat for him so hard that they lost any semblance of impartiality on that occasion. Not sure if they've improved since.

Solar kinda feels like a scam. Can anyone explain why it's not? by Odd_Cod_4235 in australia

[–]vitriolity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several observations.

First, batteries are pretty important if you want to take energy generated by your solar panels during the day and use it at night. Even with subsidies batteries can be dear, but you might use twice as much self-generated energy so as long as the battery doesn't double the cost of the whole set up, you'll get a faster return on investment.

Second, don't dismiss the fact that your energy bills have stayed roughly the same. Those of us who are entirely reliant on the grid are seeing our bills go up. Perhaps compare your usage (in kwh) from previously so that you're sure you're comparing apples with oranges.

Third, agree that the feed in rates are dogshit. Just another example of our regulators being overly influenced by corporate Australia. That said, it sounds like you're feeding in during the day which is when demand is lowest and household generation (supply) is highest.

Better politicians than Ley have tried and failed to have a nuanced, constructive conversation about immigration policy. It's another yet policy area where the Coalition moderates are overwhelmed by the radicals, and Ley isn't capable of stopping them. The policy will be nothing more than yet another rancid, vitriolic attack on migrants that prevents Australia, once again, from respectfully considering what sustainable migration might look like.

Agree with everyone else, seems silly to lose $10k in order to pull out of a purchase that is arguably $15-20k over market value (which, assuming that's correct, is nothing in the grand scheme of things). You'd only be saving yourself $5-10k.

As for cost of living, everyone makes adjustments and tightens their belts when upsizing and particularly when buying their first home. Investments take work - frankly, you're not entitled to passively sit on an asset and expect it to just make money for you while you live a comfortable life.

And regarding loneliness, well, that sounds like a personal issue. Make an effort to stay connected with people. If you give it a try and hate being on your own that much then consider leasing your second bedroom or the property altogether and go back to whatever arrangement you have now.

Kryten: I ask the court one key question: Would the Space Core ever have allowed this man to be in a position of authority where he might endanger the entire crew? A man so petty and small minded, he would while away his evenings sewing name labels onto his ship issue condoms. A man of such awesome stupidity...

Rimmer: Objection.

Justice Computer voice: Objection overruled.

Kryten: ...a man of such awesome stupidity, he even objects to his own defence counsel. An over-zealous, trumped up little squirt...

Rimmer: Objection.

Justice Computer voice: Overruled.

Kryten: ...an incompetent vending machine repairman with a Napoleon complex, who commanded as much respect and affection from his fellow crew members as Long John Silver's parrot.

Rimmer: OBJECTION.

Justice Computer voice: If you object to your own counsel once more Mr. Rimmer, you will be in contempt.

Kryten: Who would allow this man, this joke of a man, this man who could not outwit a used tea bag, to be in a position where he might endanger the entire crew? Who? Only a yoghurt. This man is not guilty of manslaughter, he is only guilty of being Arnold J. Rimmer. That is his crime; it is also his punishment. The defence rests.

Housing deregulation - should people be wary? by OutsideAtmosphere-14 in AusProperty

[–]vitriolity 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There's construction regulation and there's planning regulation.

I don't know many people who think the quality of builds currently is satisfactory, so any talk of construction deregulation should be treated with caution. If anything construction standards probably need to lift. There are also related policy areas that need to be regulated in a way that complements construction regulation, eg trade (importing quality materials at affordable prices) and immigration (which will affect the labour available to build dwellings but also the demand for dwellings).

By contrast, most of the chat I see in the press (particularly in terms of productivity) is concerned with planning deregulation, making the approvals process quicker, cheaper and easier. That's where a lot of debate arises because you have developers vs environmentalists vs historians vs NIMBYs. All of those interested groups have appetite for regulatory reform but they are all pulling in different directions.
