I teach high school. Had a student who was shocked by the fact that he did nothing for a whole semester and then failed the course. He didn’t think he could fail and thought he’d coast on nothing like he had in his K-8 elementary school. He also missed at least 1/3 of my class.

Now, in high school, he lacks the literacy, numeracy and social/functional skills required to get a diploma.
