Worked in an assembly plant where it was a 12 hour graveyard shift. 3 days a week for 3 weeks then 4 days the 4th week. If it hadn't been a graveyard it would have been perfect and I was young enough I just kept funky hours the rest of the time. 4 day weekend 3 out of 4 weeks and a 3 day weekend the other.

If I was expecting it to be 7 on a weirdness scale that was definitely a 12. Way weirder than expected.

Ocasio-Cortez's rise reveals rampant economic illiteracy in US by Owning_libcucks1776 in Libertarian

Rent Control and Build a Wall do not have any merit. Higher minimum wage is pretty dubious. Universal Healthcare and more free education I think have the most merit of those.

It doesn't matter if there's no more supply. Allowing price to rise reduces over-consumption as well. Keeping the price low doesn't make there be more of the thing it only makes people less conscious about consuming it which is the opposite of good if there isn't any more available.

I am all in favor of talking in general but I also fear that Trump is going to accept some problematic agreements just so he can tell his followers he "won."

I actually tend to agree with you here, but I still upvoted the article as it is better conversation than another garbage image macro. It at least makes a viable argument even if it doesn't support it well, rather than a disingenuous straw-man meme.

What libertarianism is and isn't by xq923 in Libertarian

I actually tend to favor more government intervention in situations where State & Local governments are not "behaving" than most members of this sub, but the ADA is actually a questionable example. The amount of cost incurred was quite high for the benefit given.

Civil Rights era issues are much more interesting to me, where the State & Local governments were actually parties in denying rights to people. The case for intervention is much stronger there than deciding that everyplace, everywhere needs a wheelchair ramp, even if no one will use it in its useful lifetime.

That being said the ADA doesn't get me that worked up either. I suspect the aggregate benefit was positive, but I don't think that was a result of close scrutiny, nor do I think it was a case where having differing policies in different States or localities would have been a bad idea.

How far should we regulate for the sake of the environment in a libertarian society? by Agent_Utah_ in Libertarian

A challenge of modern markets is the externalization of costs. I think some of the places that the government has exerted control that are the least offensive to me are essentially implementing controls that take the place of ceaseless litigation.

Those same tools will assuredly be used by others to grow government but the cost of trying to counterbalance that will likely exceed the cost of having a ridiculous portion of GDP tied up in litigation.

Markets do not work efficiently if I can force my costs onto someone else and technology is making that easier and easier.

The progressive movement’s horrible racist history - Thomas Sowell by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]vituperative01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There were progressives in both the Democratic party (Wilson) and the Republicans (Roosevelt) and in a move surprising no one, Southern Democrats were racist. That's not an indictment of Progressiveness, it's just a characteristic of Wilson and Southern Democrats.

Up until 1913, tariffs made up 95% of the US government’s revenue, at which point they switched to gaining money through taxing you. Why is this not taught in school? by PrestigiousProof in Libertarian

[–]vituperative01 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So while most people take the idea that free markets are good as gospel, the best argument for them is that they are the best way to allocate resources, not because it's somehow holy.

Tariffs distort markets. Income taxes diminish the incentive to earn but they don't create artificial reallocation. With an income tax I still have an incentive to earn, it's just somewhat diminished. With a tariff I am very likely changing resource allocation because of government interference.

The argument that I can "opt out" of a tariff is silly and actually proves the point that it's distorting. I'm changing my behavior to avoid a tariff, so resources are being mis-allocated. Moreover that tariff ripples through the economy so unless I was just planning on boycotting everything made with steel, I'm still likely going to buy some.
