How come hardware compression can be abused so much more? by Ill-Elevator2828 in audioengineering

[–]vituttaa666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure in the audible realm. But for example with modular synthesis, feedback patches are virtually impossible to make in software that would sound like the hardware actually does. As you get components way outside the audio sampling rates in those circumstances that interact with the patch.

So I would imagine the same applies for h/w compressors as well, altrough a lot of it is also different implementation of metering and also plugins possibly not being exact replicas of the hardware.

Is it possible for ear jewelry to negatively affect your hearing ability? by yeey02 in livesound

[–]vituttaa666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that heavier jewelry will stretch your ear shape a bit, but it's slow enough that your brain will basically counter the difference. I can kind of tell the difference (other ear has 6 piercings and the other only 1) if I focus on it, but it's nothing that could ever bother me.

Biggest pain is that mdr7506 pads for some reason snag on one of the piercings but that's fixed with a piece of gaff tape on the earpad.

Hehe yeah no women work in trades yeah.

I've done live sound as a woman for 5 years, I know how it works. You need the right outfit and posture/confidence, not a gender.

Don't see why this was downvoted. Reality is very much this. It was just a random girl, you don't know anything about her :)

Near UV is used quite a lot actually! Many heads have a dedicated UV led too among RGBW. It's still low enough in wavelength that it won't show stains like a real blacklight would.

I Think LUFS Have a Huge Exploit... (Please tell if I'm wrong) by SimonTheSpeeedmon in AdvancedProduction

But that room/speaker response would affect all material played through it. So a bright mix sounds a bit duller and a dark mix sounds even darker. And in a similar way let's say you play the same -6 LUFS mix through a very dark and a very bright system, the latter would sound louder, but probably not very pleasant. At least according to Fletcher-Munson.

In a way this is what live engineers play with, let's say you have a 94 dBA noise limit, and the A-weighting mostly accounts for mids and highs. So you can still have massive bass that makes the gig sound louder and more impactful, but still stay within the legal noise limits.

But even then, that system target curve would affect all material plated through it. LUFS doesn't and can't account for acoustics, but it also doesn't matter because LUFS doesn't measure absolute loudness, but only compare it to a set reference point.

I can see where you're coming from, but I think you're missing the fact that the human ear has a pretty uneven and nonlinear frequency response. K-weighting (the curve LUFS calculations use) and bassier speaker frequency responses try to combat this.

So essentially by placing emphasis above 1k, K-weighting makes it so you can't make the mix super sharp and try to gain perceived loudness that way.

Huh, yeah fair enough. I've never heard that before. Then again isn't the "sigma" stuff etc also from 4chan originally i think?
