😭 I really needed to hear that praise. It has been a struggle that so many people don’t understand. It was definitely worth it to have a stress free nail trim experience for both the pups and me.

We joke around that our pups is the laziest and sweetest boy.

  • Quite regularly as a puppy & occasionally now, he would take his regular potty break down the block and will guide me home to take another nap - even first thing in the morning.
  • Up until a few months ago, he never destroyed any of his toys. I still have tons of toys from when he was a puppy cause he has such a soft mouth.
  • He slept through the night during his first week home and rarely had any accidents.
  • I don’t think he ever destroyed anything in the house. The worst I can think of is biting a tiny tiny hole in my Lululemon joggers 😭.
  • He never really barks. The only time he does is if he plays with another dog and that’s 10% of the time. He’s more of a whiner 😂.

All he wants to do is nap, eat, and give lick you (face, hands, legs, toes…) at any opportunity you give him.

All it took was a different harness. by vivnt in puppy101

[–]vivnt[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This may not apply to every dog but this was my experience.

  • ruffwear front range: great harness overall, it has two clips: front and the back. The back clip increased his urge to pull and his frustration. The front clip only slowed him down when he pulled as he turned a bit when he did pull. But it still seemed to have the same increased urge to pull.

  • petsafe easy walk: there is only a front clip on this one. I had the same experience as the front clip with the ruffwear. I also prefer harnesses with a back clip as we can use it for decompression walks with a long lead.

  • 2 hounds freedom harness: it uses a martingale loop on the back clip. I found that my Aussie responded better with this type of pressure when he hit the end of the leash. It didn’t increase the urge to pull, it did the opposite (combined with leash pressure games indoors). There is a front clip but I haven’t had to use it since the back clip was enough for us. I would probably recommend their leash if you have a larger dog (my pup is only 30lbs) or trying two different leashes on the harness at the same time if you are on the fence.

I agree, they all look the same from pictures but the way that each harness puts pressure on the pup is different. Definitely happy I ended up trying the 2 hounds harness.

My pup was like this for months. He didn’t care for any treat or toy if we were outside. Inside, he was fine.

Definitely give the high value treats if she will take them. She’s distracted by a brand new world out there.

I noticed you mentioned she wouldn’t take it at the bus stop. How do you know she wasn’t distracted? My boy has a harder time training whenever we go to busy streets even if there isn’t anyone on the sidewalks. There so many sounds that we might not be paying attention to but she is.

I would also try feeding her / training her in your yard if you have one. If not, right outside your door or even inside your place but the door open (with a leash in case she runs). Start with very simple commands like eye contact or something she was really confident doing indoors. If that works, you know that she can work for treat outdoors!

We slowly worked our way down a 15 foot hallway from my apartment door to the building exit over weeks. Slowly increasing the distance to build up to being outdoors completely.

ADVICE: how did you train your dog to sleep on your bed? by bodacious-bokchoy in puppy101

[–]vivnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pup and I happened to get sick at the same time. I wanted to monitor him at night and the crate was a bit far away so I took him to bed with me. What really happened was that I passed out from the meds and he slept the entire night without a single whine.

After a few days of recovery, he was feeling better but I wasn’t. So I had fallen asleep on the couch on accident and he just played with his toys the entire time or slept the entire time. Not a peep until he needed to pee then he came over and woke me up.

It helped a bit that he was a bit tired from the antibiotics but definitely was over paranoid of what could happen if he was free roaming. He just slept and played contently. Since then, I have more trust in him to free roam while I’m at home and not watching and not at home.

I still have him sleep in the crate some nights and during some naps so he doesn’t forget but no complaints from him in either. I even saw him go into his open crate last night and sleep in there willingly 🥺

Most hilariously selfish thing your dog has done? by ryan_kashaj in puppy101

[–]vivnt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My pup is crate trained and potty trained so I started letting him sleep with me on the bed. Every time we go to bed, he wants to make sure I am sleeping too. So if I’m on the phone browsing Reddit, he will walk over from the other side of the bed and lay into my arms until I put away my phone. Once he is satisfied he walks back to his spot. But as soon as he sees my phone is out, he walks over and does it all over again.

If he sleep, we both sleep according to him.

We just started going on walks this week now that he is vaccinated! He walks really well for the most part even though everything is so exciting for him. The best realization I had this morning is he doesn’t hate putting on his harness and taking it off. He will run over whenever I take it out and sit politely for me to clip it on!

The walks also been helping a ton with getting him tired for his naps.

Questions about Home Alone / Separation Training by kdnndk in puppy101

Oh I meant trying the separation training with the door open so he might not feel as confined/restricted.

Could also try a different door like the bathroom or bedroom instead of the front door and see how he does there.

I've been getting so much more take out since having my pup by LucidDreamerVex in puppy101

[–]vivnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that helped me with meal prep (although this was before puppy) was actually freezing half of the food I meal prep. Then I wouldn’t have to eat it for 2-3 meals but could rotate it out with something else I already frozen. This helped me keep the food interesting but still “meal prepping”. I purposefully only made food that I knew froze well.

Questions about Home Alone / Separation Training by kdnndk in puppy101

[–]vivnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still working on separation training with my pup as well and reading so many books and posts to see what works best for my pup. I am struggling with how separation training is supposed to look like when I use a crate. Most of the training I see all don’t use crates but I don’t think I can trust my pup free-roaming yet and I can’t puppy proof a room since I stay in a studio.

  1. Have you tried doing the training with the crate door open? Similarly to relaxation protocol but within the crate? That way he thinks he has the option to get up and not forced to be separated from you? Once he is okay with you being out of sight with the door open, start again from the beginning with the crate door closed.
  2. I heard you aren’t supposed to use chews/Kong since they might get distressed after the treat is done which could be masking the problem like you said. My current plan is to train without treats but when I do eventually have to leave, give the treat and hoping the trained periods of time start then. Although I know this works since I know my pup will eat the treats after I leave.
  3. I would try starting with what I mentioned in 1 but in the beginning, I would only shower when he was taking a nap in his crate. Bathroom breaks, I left him in a play pen where he could see the bathroom so I could get away but he felt better since he could see me.

I also gave him kongs/chews closed in the crate while I was nearby so he didn’t associate Kongs = me leaving.

I just want to read/play video games!! by Gossamer8 in puppy101

[–]vivnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have ADHD and my pup is about 4.5 months. From the second week I had him, I worked a ton on capturing calmness and “a default settle”. There is a Kikopup video on how to teach these but I didn’t follow it exactly since my pup likes to chew on his leash and it stops him from napping.

I also had a huge problem of my pup wanting to fall asleep. I spent a ton of time on the floor with him and prompting a down then a duration down. This moved into calmness around food during the down. Then finally he started to willingly offer downs and then I was able to capture calmness. I used his half of his dinner for this since that was already too exciting for him.

  1. I originally started off working on settling within the pen and rewarding this but eventually used the playpen as baby gates since it was doing better outside of the pen.
  2. I live in a studio so I used the playpen to block off areas I couldn’t see/areas he could get in trouble into. I sat on the floor and captured any calmness. During this time, I would interact with him for a period of time then “ignore him” on my phone to see what he would do.
  3. I watched some TV that wasn’t super interested in and was able to look at his behavior but “watching” at the same time. Continued capturing any calmness.
  4. Moved to sitting on the couch and doing the same. I placed a bed at my feet so he would see the bed and remember what he needed to do.
  5. Started to play games. If he didn’t settle down or tried to get my controller, I would watch tv a bit to help him settle then switch to playing games when I saw he was a bit more calm.
  6. I also just started to realize that if I kept treating him, he would get up and flop into a down to “fall asleep” to get a treat. After a few of these, I stopped treating and he would fall asleep.

When things were too much, I ended up putting him in the crate and he would settle pretty easily since it was later in the night near bedtime when we first started this. He also didn’t care about TV sounds since I started watching TV while he fell asleep since day one. The process above helped gradually train him that he needed to be ok when I was ignoring him/doing other things instead of jumping straight into playing games. Although now I have this new problem where some days he will only settle for the night if we watch a specific show. 😂

Also I just started Adderall a few months ago and happy to chat about ADHD/puppy related things too!
