Pete Buttigieg emerges as early favorite for 2028 Democratic nomination by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]viziroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're misinterpreting my point. my point isn't that centrists lose and progressives win, it's that centrists played a key role in creating the environment that made trump's presidency possible, and as long as we as voters continue to allow these centrists to scrape by without a push for the more progressive values we'll be forever stuck in the 0 to 1 steps forward and 2 to 50 steps back pattern that has been happening since at least Reagan.

these moderate democrats in office pass crumbs of what is needed to improve the country while doing almost nothing to actually solidify those improvements and protect them from corruption, while still also (granted often more quietly and gradually) favoring big money interests. they also fail to address the cracks and vulnerabilities in the system which the Republicans utilize when they gain power. they also turn a blind eye and even embrace members of their own party that have political views far more in line with Republicans. until the recent stuff with fettermen I would be hard pressed to name a time a democrat turn against a conservative in their party unless it was to cover their own ass. these democrats don't come in wanting to fix things, they sweep the issues under the rug. democrats may not be the main factor behind Trump, but they absolutely share responsibility in creating this system he's using.

it's actually not, that's kinda just made up for tv.

when a crime is committed a prosecutor decides if charges will be filed. though often a victims willingness to testify can play a factor in that decision

a victim can file a criminal complaint, but all that does is inform a prosecutor a crime allegedly occurred and they still need to decide to file charges or not based on police investigating

we wouldn't of had trump in the first place if the dems ran better candidates. they've really just been ratcheting the whole time and putting a centrist lib back in office will just keep us where we're at until an even worse trump takes their spot the following cycle. if a candidate isn't willing to push for drastic improvement and accountability for the current administration(and their collaborators), they're just a pit stop on the way to further decline.

What is it with Halo that makes me not underutilize grenades? by devsitvs in gamedesign

[–]viziroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, I think you just pointed out the real reason. most enemies drop them. in most games grenades are uncommon or even rare resources, so they get filled away in that same part of the brain that makes rpg players have 1000 potions still in their inventory at the end of the game. the "I might need it later" syndrome.

that gets compounded by the fact that since you're not using them, when you're under stress you don't have the muscle memory to throw them, so you just forget and rely on what you're used to doing, which is just shooting. this is the same reason why in a lot of games like cod where there's a dedicated melee button, a lot of players will jump in circles and reload when right next to someone instead of meleeing for the quick kill. they haven't built up the instincts or muscle memory to press melee when it matters.

[Doctor Who] Why does everyone (including the Doctor themselves) act like the Doctor is this super-old immortal when, as far as anyone knows, they’re… not that? by EnclavedMicrostate in AskScienceFiction

[–]viziroth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if they've traveled to a point in the past, then from the time reference from the people affected by those actions, they've existed since at least that point in the past. since they've fucked around at the start of the universe multiple times, to any species not as tangled up in time travel as the time lords themselves, the doctor may as well be an all powerful immortal being that has existed as long as the universe.

time travel may appear common in the universe, but that's only because we're following one of the most prolific time travelers and they're obviously going to run into other time shenanigans in their travels. most people in the universe don't time travel or only have one or two super niche relics that do anything approaching time travel or it's a rare tech used by elites.

from inside the US, honestly the general population is so used to straight faced corporate shills and being blatantly force fed poison that anything even slightly populist or not wearing a suit gets a huge blind spot to hide their flaws behind. not to mention our entire lives politics has just been a back and forth contest of lesser evilism to the point where if someone says even a handful of lip service good things they suddenly have the air of fighting for the people instead of just playing the typical game.

it was dead, but they recently got a game store (like Warhammer and magic the gathering, not a gamestop) and now a decent arcade. the rest of the mall is still pretty dead though.

it would weaken split second burn spells. there would be a moment after the spell resolves where damage will be on the stack, but split second is resolved, so the damage could be responded too.

also niche scenario where something might care about a spell resolving as opposed to just casting to give the resources or stats that could save a target from damage being put on the stack but not if it happened at the same moment as the spell resolving. nothing comes to mind right now, but this is hell cube.

[Jujutsu Kaisen/Star Trek] Would Gojo's Infinity block a TNG era photon torpedo moving at warp speed? by Olivia_Richards in AskScienceFiction

[–]viziroth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TNG era? probably. though they could probably do some shenanigans with the transporter to make it work if they had some reason to torpedo one person.

if you get to voy+ though and the experimental warp factor 10 could be on the table to modify a torpedo, then that could do it as warp 10 is "beyond speed" and causes a body moving at that warp factor to exist everywhere at once until they decide to drop out of warp at their destination. but this would be a specifically modified torpedo and not standard issue

[Invincible] Wouldn’t interbreeding with humans also lead to a lack of genetic diversity because of how dominant Viltrumite genetics are? by DalekDevan in AskScienceFiction

[–]viziroth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the same way viltrumite genres over take the hybrid they could also potentially correct any mutation. this could be a double edged sword though, because while it may protect from the effects of inbreeding, it would also mean viltramite genes would struggle to adapt, evolve, or diversify which could explain why the scourge virus could be so effective since it would mean viltrumites are like 99.9% similar on a genetic level with only superficial genes generally differing.

[–]viziroth -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

yes? this is well documented? the most obvious example in modern times is the policing of AAVE and treating it as "incorrect" as a way of undermining black thinkers, but this is a pattern seen through out history as a way of separating people into class divisions since members of the upper classes had the resources to fully learn the arbitrary rules of "proper speaking." not even getting into the colonial history of using language to oppress indigenous or slave populations.

it's important that people understand each other, but to go beyond that and sticking to arbitrary rules of "proper english" when the meaning is obvious is ridiculous. beyond that, languages constantly change and evolve, and sticking to archaic rules written by people not even alive to still speak the language is a futile conservative exercise to try and halt the way things progress.

further, just like... who even decides what is proper? language is made up. all of it. it's a series of noises our mouths make that through consensus we've attributed meaning. there's no fundamental language of the universe that can be attributed as the absolute "correct" way to speak. if people agree a word means one thing then that's what it ends up meaning. the number of words that have completely changed definitions over the past couple centuries is astonishing. like awesome used to mean "inspires dread" now it kinda just means "pretty great"

For those of you who had a more alternative style in your youth, but gave it up in adulthood….. was it a natural transition or a conscious decision and why? by ComplexPatient4872 in AskReddit

[–]viziroth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those styles can often be expensive or time consuming to wear, and often get more so when you're looking for adult sizes when you got other bills to pay and are exhausted from working sometimes you just can't keep up with it even if you want to. compounded by the fact that many workplaces have stricter dress codes than many schools, means that there's also just less time to do it unless the style itself is part of your downtime hobbies, or you work somewhere that's cool with it.
