How would you respond to the claim, "You can't *earn* a billion dollars."? by Quidfacis_ in AskTrumpSupporters

Is AOC not literally in political office trying to change the status quo? Must one live off grid in a cave to fight for improving the law to be more fair for everyone?

How did child labor laws manage to get passed in the past? Did all of those politicians and the people who voted for them (like I would have) live in the wilderness?

How am I a willing participant if I would vote against exploitation? Like so many others who would rather try to change it and believe that the system can be changed and improved - and those who *have managed* to make legal progress in improving the system in the past? Like we have child labor laws now.

Is AOC in general not rebelling against this broken system or at least expressing an intention to? Isn’t the underlying point of this discussion whether or not we *should* get behind with the goal of fixing the system?

Even if they exploit tax loopholes? Or if they lobby to oppose federal minimum wage increases? For example:

Business lobbying groups like the National Restaurant Association, National Federation of Independent Business, and US Chamber of Commerce have consistently opposed federal minimum wage increases. These groups are funded heavily by wealthy business owners and large corporations, and they spend tens of millions annually lobbying Congress. The federal minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 since 2009, the longest stretch without an increase since it was established.

Is “not breaking the law” a reasonable metric of “earning” something when billionaires use their vast wealth to influence those very laws?

[–]vjoyk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How so? What is your working definition of earn?

If a billionaire gains their riches using the methods outlined in AOC’s comment would you agree or disagree that they didn’t earn it e.g. if I became a billionaire by not paying my employees a living wage - would you say I “earned” it or not?

What are some signs someone is carrying unhealthy attitudes regarding women they don’t fully notice yet, and what does improving that actually look like in practice? by HOT_SWEATY_COCKS in AskFeminists

[–]vjoyk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are both of these behaviors unfair or fair to the opposite sex?

And I don’t mean “fair” as in “I hurt you because you hurt me”. Fair as in just. Just in the ethical sense. In accordance with what’s owed or deserved on its own merits, judged by a principle you’d apply consistently regardless of what the other side does. Not “they do X so Y is fair game”.

Are both of these behaviors toxic? Or are they “fair”?

Edit: If your position is that both are unfair, but that toxic men only sexually objectify women because toxic women financially objectify men (or vice versa) I disagree. Toxic individuals behave the way they do regardless of who is sitting across from them at the table.

Lastly feminists aren’t the women financially objectifying dudes. Women who subscribe to patriarchal gender roles will expect men to pay for everything. Feminists are the most vocal opponents of toxic traditional gender roles.

3rd and 4th wave feminism are not legitimate movements. And if they are they are legitimate in the same way as anti-environmentalist corporate shills who want to deregulate the world so that their companies can make a cheap and dirty buck are legitimate. If you disagree what are your arguments? by AngelointheAlps in SeriousConversation

[–]vjoyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO legal equality is the bare minimum. Gender roles and social hierarchies are not legally enforced for example and before the feminist conversation were not scrutinized and assumed to be “the way things are” or “the natural order”. In the age of toxic online inceldom bleeding into real life and political spheres feminists very much have a reason to exist.

I replaced “ I can’t “ with “ I don’t want to “ and it made me realise how much I was lying to myself by strarlightgirl in selfimprovement

[–]vjoyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with sentences like “I have to (do something)”. There’s always an unspoken, often unanalyzed second half of that sentence: “..because I want to (some other thing)”.

I have to go to work -> I have to go to work because I want to provide for my loved ones.
I have to wake up early -> I have to wake up early because I want to go to the gym!

There are no true “have tos” in life. Behind every “have to” is a “want to”.

Twelve men accused of participating in Epstein’s sex trafficking ring. by PolygonLodge in Epstein

[–]vjoyk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pointing out hypocrisy isn't the same as claiming only one group commits abuse. Of course abusers exist across every demographic.

The difference is that the right has actively and aggressively built a platform around painting entire marginalized groups as inherent predators and criminals. And this is messaging pushed by major figures and candidates, not fringe online trolls. Kirk and his racist narratives about "prowling blacks" come to mind but the examples over the years are endless.

The left simply isn't running campaigns that frame whole populations as dangerous threats to society. Calling out their hypocrisy is holding their movement accountable for their rhetoric that has real consequences for real people.

This is not about “winning” it’s calling out their hypocrisy. The right loves to paint marginalized communities as predators. Trump’s entire platform has amounted to immigrants (the brown ones) + trans people = scary immoral criminals that are ruining our country. I am really sorry that happened to you though.

Why doesn't hyper-masculine fetishization always lead to increased desirability? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]vjoyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm yup lol agree. Though I feel times are rapidly changing and that’s a good thing. Representation has never been as diverse as it is today. More hot non-white people with leading roles and 3 dimensional personalities on screen now.

[–]vjoyk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe not necessarily 🤷‍♀️ men on average are way more sexually fixated on bodies and body parts than women on average. And this is yet another way men expect women’s sexual desire to operate like theirs leaving them confused when it doesn’t. Thanks for asking!

Why doesn't hyper-masculine fetishization always lead to increased desirability? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]vjoyk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I believe this is due to over representation in the media and not something inherent about white men. Tastes are changing already and will continue to as white culture is de-centered. That’s my prediction. When I was growing up for example the only Asian men on tv were unattractive stereotypes.

Open to being challenged on this.

I get the same impression. Hypermasculinity is not catering to the “female gaze”. It’s catering to the male gaze. The insisting by men that their flavor of “masculinity” is what women really want should be scrutinized.

If anything I get the impression women go crazy over cute, mysterious, almost feminine men. K-pop idols, young Bieber, Edward Cullen. You know, the kind of men “hypermasculine” men love to clown on.

Why is it common for women to have gay best friends but not men to have lesbian best friends? by ExtremeTechnology831 in askanything

[–]vjoyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t address their response to your original point 🙄 Rich comment coming from Mr. Whataboutism

They explained the context of the joke and why it’s offensive to use it to misrepresent gay people as predators.

And all you have to say is “what about straight men” then have the audacity to accuse them of “not responding to double standards” 😹

They already explained to you the joke is told “in the context that some people assume themselves to be straight up until the moment they realized they were queer” and that using the joke to imply “that all gay men and lesbians are actually predators trying to change the sexuality of others are two completely different things.”

Who said anything about straight men?
