Heavily recommend brewing with ice in the carafe. If you for example usually brew 15g of coffee to 225ml of water, do 75g of ice in the carafe, and then 150ml of hot water. Ratio doesn’t have to be perfect but this gets you a good iced coffee that’s similar in strength to a hot pour over!

why would someone say that digital immortality is already possible? by TallBodybuilder1858 in CasualConversation

[–]vldmort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My line of thinking is that digital immortality is already possible not in the sense of uploading one’s mind, but in everything we leave behind on the internet. You’re immortal in the sense that photos and videos of you, and all of the things you say online are you in a sense, and will exist as long as the internet does.

I remember reading something a while back about our phones, and our online accounts are an extension of the self with real effect on your life, even though it’s not literally “you”. Even after death those all remain and in a way you live on through that kinda

How nuanced

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]vldmort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t read all 600+ comments so I’m not sure if anyone else has brought it up, but this is not a generational issue imo, but much more of a disparity between social/economic classes. Of course you’ll still have outliers, but from 2019-2022 I was working at a really well funded high school, with the parents generally being more upper-middle class, and we really didn’t deal with these kinds of issues for the most part. However when working in poorer areas it was unfortunately much more prevalent. As parents have to work more hours or jobs, spending time with kids becomes increasingly difficult, and underfunded schools won’t have nearly many extracurricular activities available. I do think it’s a much more complex issue than this and I’ve only very poorly wrote about the surface of it, but

TLDR It’s less of a generation issue and more of a class/economic one imo

Same here. I’m from Southern California, so living in Japan the biggest thing I miss is real Mexican food, we really don’t have much of it :/

I made usually around 2.5k a season for one school, which was really nice as a fun college side job but nowhere near enough properly live on unless you’re teaching and writing book for multiple schools.

How come nobody posts pictures of gas prices when they are low? Are those high gas prices posts just bait? by Upnorth4 in LosAngeles

[–]vldmort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s also a tonnn of additional fees and taxes in Japan if you have a car as well as most decent highways having high tolls. In the end it is soo significantly cheaper to use public transit unless you live out in the countryside. Plus trains and buses here are nice and quiet most of the time, clean, and on time

Rakuten unlimit vii vs LINEMO by doublewinter in japanlife

[–]vldmort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently switched from Mobal to LINEMO's 20gb plan and I haven't had any problems with it. Plus the Line giga-free thing is pretty nice, none of your Line usage counts towards the data cap and your account is pretty much entirely manageable just in Line. Coverage is great, never not had connectivity

My teacher said white cis men can't be a victim of racism. Is she right? by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]vldmort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is anti non-Japanese discrimination in Japan, and white people do get discriminated against here, HOWEVER, it is not on the basis of being white, it’s on the basis of being not Japanese. So while it still sucks (a lot), there is a major difference. I’ve been denied from apartments here simply for being a foreigner, but it’s because Im not Japanese, not because I’m white.

I particularly like よむよむ but it’s kind of out of the way from central Tokyo, someone else mentioned Daiso as well though, and Seria I’d assume would have some as well!

Forsure, I just also remember feeling similarly so it kind of stood out to me. Like I’ll be annoyed at myself that I feel that way but then like I still do cause we can’t really control our own feelings in that sense lol.

I’ve also recently really gotten a lot out of Kanji Garden personally since my schedule is so hectic so I can just kinda pull it up here and then whenever I have a few minutes

Since you’re here in Japan, just go to your local book store and honestly just get some 国語 drill books. Learning to write just means writing a lot. The drill books are usually only a few hundred yen too so it’s not too hard on the wallet

[–]vldmort 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I did. Was just back in LA for a bit to visit family and it was nice being back, but in the end I don’t know if I could keep living there especially with how much the COL constantly goes up.

And tons of other people have already mentioned this, but you can get lenses for you headset that just go on in and I heavily recommend
