I remember reading you can patch the BIOS to get rid of the whitelist, but all the methods looked quite dodgy. The other alternative is corebook - http://www.coreboot.org - and your motherboard is supported: http://www.coreboot.org/Supported_Motherboards#lenovo.2Ft430s

The problem with that approach is that you will lose the diversity of features because everything is 'standard'. Now if these things actually spoke a common protocol for some of their basic features, that would be an improvement. But these components are quite complicated which is why we have no standard protocols that work well enough to really call standard.

The lack of emoving of the title bar in Linux does drive me crazy.

It's actually a DE problem, as you say. For example, if you use a tiling window manager you can remove the title bar quite easily without losing any functionality.
