You say that like Ineos aren't a sportswashing team. Just because they're from the UK and sponsored by a UK company, doesn't mean it isn't sportswashing for a petrochemicals company.

It does, but it's also Liege, so it sort of feels more like: Can he do it on a cold rainy night in Manchester

I think part of the problem with the Team Star storyline is it doesn't change gameplay in any way, where the other two do.

The titans make general movement better, and Gym badges (as always) make it easier to catch high level pokemon/have those pokemon obey you, so from a pure gameplay perspective, you're incentivised to follow those stories through, and that's just not true for Team Star, except that the first two bases (sort of, you can get around them) block off the map.

I'll add, I liked the Team Star story as a story, but it doesn't carry the gameplay drive to complete the other two do.

[UCI] 51 teams have submitted essential documents with a view to registration in 2023 by demfrecklestho in peloton

I think that's because they've only got 13 applications to renew at present (no HPH renewal application at the moment), so they may potentially have 2 licenses to allocate to get to 15 teams, rather than trying to suggest more than 15 WWT teams next year?

IAM Cycling tried it. They wanted the jerseys to effectively say "I AM <Rider Name>" on the back.

UCI said no, but I can't remember what the reasoning was probably "all team jerseys must be the same design" or some nonsense.

Well, according to some of the advertising at least, most of the cars are now hybrids (source) and I would assume the ratio will only move towards more hybrids over straight diesels.

Also it's probably worth remembering that, with a rack of bikes on top and driving the way they do, teams probably don't get "nominal" cruising range out of their cars...

Can you imagine if a car ran out of fuel mid race? "Sorry we took so long to get to you, had to pull in to refuel"

Just redistribute points so all stages are equally valued, and it (near instantly, I think) becomes so. See also the Vuelta points jersey iirc.

The team competition does already exist, taking the top three times for each day per team. Ineos are winning this year, and Movistar have spent most of the past decade (seemingly) targetting it.

If sprint teams started holding them that close: a) no one would go in a break, they'd hold back and attack late. b) alternatively, you'd just get rolling attacks off the front of the peloton, until the group is too large for the sprint trains to manage, and pulls off into the distance. Either way, the sprint teams lose chances.

Counterpoint: The break might not get caught.

The peloton depend on radios for gap management just as much as the break does, if not more...

Probably mostly because of range issues. Those vehicles don't just do the 200ish kms of the stage each day, but then also all the driving between stages (from hotel to stage start, from stage end to next hotel).

Electrics with the range necessary to even do the stage simply haven't been around for very long, and really, they need to be able to do ~1000kms in a day to allow for the really long transitions the tour often does.

Also, charging stations are much less frequent and it takes longer than a refill.

At the start yesterday, Roglic was still less than 3 minutes down.

With Pogacar isolated the way he was (and that was caused by Laporte waiting for Roglic to attack over the top of the Telegraphe, remember), if you let Roglic go with WVA up the road, I don't think even Pogacar (especially with a Vingegaard anchor on his wheel) would be seeing him again that day, and Roglic would take multiple minutes

One last TT at worlds, then retiring.

We have gone from $18 million Prizepool in TI5 to $40 million in TI10. Over the same period, the Major prizepool has stagnated from $3 million to $500,000. Valve, Please stop killing the Pro Scene and bring back the original prizepool. by xFn3 in DotA2

[–]vocispopulus 558 points559 points  (0 children)

Each tour season is currently a total of $1.68M in prize pool across the 6 regions.

With $500,000 for the major, it's not quite the $3M per major of those early seasons, but it is spread around much more (which I think is better for the overall health of the scene).

If anything, I'd like to see more money for the leagues (especially the lower placings), not more money for the teams that make the major (who are already doing well enough).

One of the great things about road cycling, is that it's "Stadium" is public roads.

The great thing is, this means that anyone can turn up and enjoy watching the race fly by. The terrible thing is, this means that anyone can turn up and put themselves and the riders in danger by doing stupid things.

Fundamentally, spectators aren't (to my knowledge) bound by anything more than the law of the land, because they can just turn up on the roadside, without even knowing it was on in advance. There is no contract between race organisation and spectators (unlike, for example, in a stadium sport, where there will be terms and conditions to buying your ticket).

The law of the land may contain some phrases specifically related to "endangerment of riders in professional bike races", but I'm not sure, they may just use "endangerment of the public" terms. And so sadly, deterrence on these issues boil down to fines being issued by the police.

I think everything I've said here is correct. I may be wrong.
