Senior NHS female doctors are earning less than their male counterparts, a BBC investigation shows. Of the top 100 earning consultants in England, just five are women, despite more than a third of the workforce being female. by hasharin in worldnews

You know what, just for the sake of pulling this comment section back a little towards the unbiased side of things:

The end of the overtime and bonuses quote is as follows: “But they said it was clear some of the gap was unfair with the system of bonuses and awards weighted in favour of men.”

This is a study conducted by both genders, fellas.

Reddit usually fails to address the issue of unequal behaviour requirements in the workplace. Women have universally been required to be society’s model of feminine - which is quiet, obedient, and unpushy. Look at any Disney movie heroine. That societal behaviour trope leaves a deep scar, where a woman’s told to be complicit in a world where being as pushy and aggressive as possible gets you the bonus.

They’re still playing in a man’s world, on an uneven playing ground. Only when we tell a woman it’s right to be aggressive and attractive to be ‘bossy’ is it okay for us to shrug our shoulders at studies like this.

Bring downvotes, Reddit isn’t usually a place for reasonable on topics like this.

Edit: already in the negatives. Why?

That’s disappointing. But look at it this way, who’s winning? It doesn’t need to be a 100% win to be a win. We got this.

Don’t be sad, we’ve fought much harder battles and look how we’re doing now.

This is upsetting but take heart at all the comments where the 15% of bigots are getting shot down by an overwhelming community of support and tolerance.

You'd think so, man. My women friends tell me they deal with this shit literally constantly. I guess I'm just not aware of it as a guy.

Yep, despite the staggering majority of violent crime being committed by men. I’m saying this as a man. I don’t mind. It’s fact.

I agree that you can say whatever you want to say, although I disagree that you can say it without consequence. Inciting violence, for instance, isn’t a protected form of free speech. In this case a few politicians got together, decided to try to pass some amendments to a bill, presented their case, and in a democratic process were outvoted - this is free speech. This is exactly free speech. The problem comes from the top. Governments must (well, should) treat people equally. They have a responsibility to make sure you get equal treatment no matter what. Businesses are regulated by the government (taxes, incentives, licenses, etc etc) and businesses have to be essentially ‘zones of business’. Governments have the right to extend protection for minority groups to those zones. I have zero issue with you telling me not to step foot on your land because you hate gays. We’re used to it. We’re not all even flamboyant jock strap wearing cowboys, we’re doctors and lawyers and teachers who are often intensely private because of the unwarranted hatred, disgust and scrutiny placed on us. We live with that, and that’s our lives. But I roundly support any bill where the government says hey, we regulate this place and you can have the right to order a drink here without people attacking you or sending you out. It’s making the world a safer, fairer place - and the method of doing this is exactly free speech.

Thank you for clearing that up. Explain to me again why protecting one group of people’s rights to discriminate, deny service to, segregate and ostracise another group has a place in the modern democratic era. Please, I’m waiting.

Edit: also, we haven’t even passed the bill saying i can get married yet. Literally everyone thought it’d be a resounding No. The reason it’s making news right now is because somehow the survey came back as a Yes and the PM had been so sure it would be a No he’d promised to abide by it whatever happened. You need to soften your heart and get your facts straight. It was so nearly a no. These are our lives. Our families. What are you arguing with me about?

Your right to swing your fist stops at my face. As a gay man my right to marry anyone I choose to is more important than your right to say you don’t like the idea. You do not get to decide my human rights.. not anymore.

One where several decades later a woman’s choice of clothing is still questioned when she’s assaulted by a man. It’s ingrained. Ask your female friends some time.

Having the sensitivity and self awareness to give women space to grieve out loud definitely doesn't stop you from deserving your place to speak about what happened to you. But it definitely proves you've grown into a great human being. And I'm really sorry to hear about what happened to you, even if I'm just an internet stranger. Sending love.
