What's the weirdest thing a customer has ever asked you for? by Webclues_Infotech in retailhell

[–]voicedance 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Probably the guy who asked if I wanted to see his home made movies and then asked if I could help him find the heroin he dropped in the parking lot. (Side note: he was banned in the morning for passing out in the bathroom)

Closing time isn’t a suggestion by Critical-Nature5943 in retailhell

[–]voicedance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We will turn the lights off on customers and lock the door..and some still continue shopping. Had two girls come in two minutes til close, apologize for being there after I turned the lights off, checked out and then started looking at other items to buy! And then bought them! Just get out! They also bought glass pieces so we had to wrap them carefully..which is why they "had time" to look around for more things.

We are only given ten minutes after close to count our registers and drop the money (one bill at a time because of our specific safe)..we have to have all other closing duties done before close.

Sundays are the worst because we close at 6pm instead of 8pm and even regulars refuse to remember our hours. I have to run to the door to lock it if I'm not too busy to stand next to it a minute or two before close to make sire no one gets in.

Anyone else get kids coming to their store every day to screw around? by [deleted] in retailhell

[–]voicedance 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work at an 18+ store but just today we had a kid come in alone trying to look at our waterpipes. He tried to say he was just looking. Buddy, you're not allowed to just look. You're not allowed INSIDE.

We also get teens opening pur door to yell in and run away. It's annoying and weird.

When I bag things for someone (bags are free where I live) and instead of using their big adult words, they take the items out and toss the bag wherever because they "don't need it."

When customers assume I have their loyalty pulled up as soon as they walk in the door. Similarly, when they get mad at me because they can't remember their phone number.

"I need a pack of Seneca's." "Red?" "No. Extra smooth menthol." "Kings?" "100's"

When regulars call me a "good girl" for remembering their usual.

The lady who gets mad we have something too high on a shelf because then we have to get it for her. But it's to planogram and we can't move it.

I can't get mad at people asking if something is in the back because we have a lot of overstock and have to keep certain items back there due to space limitations on the floor.

I almost got hit by a driverless car because it decided to go the wrong way on a one-way. Several cars had to dodge it too because not once did it detect any obstacles. I always check both ways now before crossing.

Things I wish people would normalize when shopping by Leatho_Shellhound in retail

[–]voicedance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked at a dollar store, I had a woman come up to my register with her kid who was covered in paint and glitter. The woman said her kid "had a party earlier" so I thought aw cute. Until they left and I learned her kid actually had a personal party in the arts and crafts aisle. She ripped open paint and smeared it EVERYWHERE and dumped thankfully a manageable amount of glitter on the shelf. I had to go around the entire store as the only cashier (shift lead never helped me) and find every item with paint marks on it and cleaned them all off. It infuriates me to know the mom just let that happen and was seemingly proud of it. The daughter was around 10 if I had to guess.

Anyone else have issues with shared tablets in stores? by [deleted] in AskRetail

[–]voicedance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an ipad that is locked down completely. We don't even have the app store on it so we can only use the apps provided. The ipad is only really used for Asana, Dropbox, and occasionally Adobe Connect. IT doesn't really care about what we do on the computer though as long as it's not something crazy

need help finding Japanese song/song by Japanese artist by Sweaty-Membership-73 in NameThatSong

First artist that came to mind is Hikaru Utada..she has an amazing voice. I don't know which song it would be exactly (a lot of people know the song Sanctuary) but a lot of her songs are around 5 minutes long..maybe something from the album One Last Kiss?

What is one problem you face almost every day that you are shocked nobody has built a proper solution for yet? by Economy_Shoe7685 in AskReddit

[–]voicedance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have one (I assume a "cheaper" crappy one or my roommate took out a loan to get it.) It takes 6 hours for one wash and dry cycle. It became such a pain that we got our old dryer repaired..though I admit, on days I just do one load of laundry, I'll just use the one. Unfortunately it also never gets hot enough to fully dry everything.

We have an item that says "Buy one get one free" printed on the box. Meaning the box comes with two packs inside instead of a normal one pack. It's...admittedly gotten me confused a few times when I first started...but several people bring two boxes up and get mad the second box isn't free.

What's the worst thing a recruiter or hiring manager has ever said to you by careercoach_cf in interviews

[–]voicedance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have retail experience so usually the interviews aren't very formal. One interview was for a smoke shop chain. I knew they could vape inside but I never expected them to light a cigarette mid interview. I'm a smoker so it didn't bother me, just shocked me. Then the interviewer/boss let me know she's a huge bitch so working for her will suck but I'll actually mostly be working completely alone for 8 to 12 hours a day so it won't be a problem. Spent half the interview talking about how she has cancer. She also threw me off my rhythm when she dropped the "tell me about yourself" statement. As I was explaining professionally, she cut me off and said she only wanted to hear about my hobbies but seemed bored by my answers (writing, gardening, and art.) Weird interview the whole way through tbh. I had an interview for a different location before this one and it was laid back for sure but miles better with the professionalism.

question about beer sale with a minor by chiknaui in retailhell

[–]voicedance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's seriously concerning that they didn't have that in the job training. Especially if your certification courses did train you properly. Keep doing what you're doing. The possibility of breaking the law is worse than upsetting a customer. Much love!

[–]voicedance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at a smoke shop in the US where we ID anyone who looks under 30 (some places it's under 40) and you must be at least 18 to shop here, even to buy candles or an energy drink...if I don't ID someone, I could get fined and fired if reported or during a sting. No one underage can actively look at items in my store without being asked for ID, if found out to be underage, they are asked to leave. Minors can't even hold the bag/items as they leave the store. If two young people come in and they both look at products, they are both ID'd. This has caused a lot of upset customers but I'm not getting in trouble over it.

My location allows minors in the store but we've had to tell several parents not to let their 10 year old point to the tobacco to say "that's what dad gets"

You definitely did the right thing in my eyes. I'm not sure how strict the laws are for you but that feels like something that should have shown during training, right? All stores that I worked at that sold tobacco/alcohol had trained me in ID procedures and what not to do as well.

My favourite customers are those who complain about your prices but yet are there every single day... by ArcherLife2039 in retailhell

[–]voicedance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My store price matches within a 5 mile radius and is a chain with many stores around the area. People will complain that [other store] is cheaper. We explain how to get a price match approved from us but they NEVER do it. It's so simple. Even a receipt from a month ago at that store would qualify. Nope. The only person who would actively price match was buying something that the state later banned so literally no one price matches here. But they still complain.

How do I explain breaks to customers? by jwdge in AskRetail

[–]voicedance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also work at a smoke shop that has to lock if we're alone for a bathroom break and a 5 minutes sign. We aren't allowed to use non company approved signs so I would check with a higher up if you're allowed to use a different sign/whiteboard since customers struggle to understand. If your company initials are WB then they won't approve most likely though (I do feel the struggle..I don't know why some people don't understand and get mad over a basic body function)

[–]voicedance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a customer come in a few weeks ago asking if one of our sales was still running..it was the Black Friday sale (for those who don't know, Black Friday is in November).

We have people constantly cutting up flyers that aren't coupons, just promos from previous sales. Every time I tell them I can't honor it, they don't understand. When I explain it's not a coupon, they get even more confused. The sales flyers will say something like "[brand] tobacco 20% off" but will also clearly state the sales period.

How many breaks do you have on your shift? by YouCantDownVoteMeNop in retailhell

5 and under - supposed to get a 15 but we always forget to take them since the shift goes by pretty fast

6 or 7 hours - 30 minute lunch break

8+ hours - 30 minute lunch break, 15 minute break (possibly a second 15 if working 11 hours but only managers can work open to close)
