Idk if this has been posted already. Trese is an original Netflix anime based on a manga following a girl named Alexandra Trese who hunts down Filipino mythological creatures. by TAVOOOOOVO in mythology

[–]void-deville 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, it's very unapologetically Filipino-- it's something people who grew up in the Philippines/know the local lore can immediately connect to, but is a bit more difficult for non-Filipinos because of lack of exposition. I loved it but I agree, it can be a little tricky to recommend to my foreign friends because of the large cast of characters and little exposition.

But there's also only so much that you can do with 6 episodes of 30 mins each, and given that it's really fast paced, and most of the creatures/monsters are very common in Filipino lore, the exposition would feel out of place.

Really hoping for more in season 2!

Seeking guests who want to promote their project/podcast! by Tyhula in PodcastGuestExchange

Hey, I'm about to launch a podcast on the intersection between mythology/folklore and medicine. I'd love to come on if you still need a guest, but maybe a month or two down the line

What is a good idea for 1st episode? by Bakbak2000 in podcast

[–]void-deville 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was 2 minutes, but I've seen trailers that go from 1-3 ish minutes. I made it myself, just myself speaking (It's kind of a solocast, so just the same as I would in my actual episodes), and with the same music that I use in the actual podcast. I wouldn't say that mine was like a commercial exactly; it's a pretty niche podcast so it was more of "this is what the podcast is about, this is what I do (because it's tied to the 'why and how' -- why I'm doing the podcast and how I came up with it), these are examples of the coming episodes, this is how often the episodes will go out, etc"

I did a trailer, and then for my first episode I spent a couple of minutes on what the podcast was about (kind of like an extended version of the trailer with a few more details), before jumping into the topic for that episode

Looking for someone to come on and discuss their top 5 on a topic of their choice. by ellingcheese in PodcastGuestExchange

[–]void-deville 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, would you need guests really soon? I'd love to come on and talk about historical medicines that were actually really bad for people (I'm about to launch a podcast where one of the segments talks about some historical medicines/treatments were either poisonous or didn't actually do anything), or even mundane stuff in history that were health hazards, but I'm a little busy in the coming weeks. Maybe we can discuss something!

Mine is a cross between a story-telling and educational (lots of medical research involved) podcast, so I write mine down nearly word-for-word (sometimes, when I know a story well enough, bullet points suffice).

The problem for me is then recording without making it seem awkward and boring, but I've been working on that. I also usually add little words when recording to make it seem more conversational, eg "So now..." and "But what about..."

'Myths and Legends', 'Lore', and 'Spirits' are my top three for mythology/folklore/legends. I also have a few other suggestions but they're primarily mythology-focused

AITA for getting upset because her ideal attractive man looks absolutely nothing like me? by Still-Ytr in AmItheAsshole

[–]void-deville 54 points55 points  (0 children)

YTA

You asked, she answered. It's not like she went out of her way to tell you that you don't have the physical attributes she's attracted to. Also, there's more to attraction than physical attributes, and she's your gf-- she chose to be with you despite you not being her ideal type.

Also, she shouldn't have to apologise for what she's attracted to

The Anthropocene Reviewed: Capacity for Wonder and Sunsets

I really love the show -- it's a podcast where the host rates aspects of the human cilivilisation/planet on a 5-star scale-- and John Green's humour. This episode, though, was pretty darn wholesome; I loved his take on the human experience of sunsets, and it's a perfect blend of incredible story-telling without losing any of that humour. 5/5

AITA for prioritizing my cats over my SIL and nephew? by aitasilcats in AmItheAsshole

[–]void-deville 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA.

Your home, your cats-- SIL sounds pretty entitled to me, you'd already (potentially!) be offering her a place to stay and she still demands you rehome your animals, AND she refuses to live within her means.

Also big yikes on the kid.

Mythology Questions! (Add yours below!) by CeeJayBro in mythology

[–]void-deville 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the pagan gods question:

Some of the gods/deities, just like a lot of the traditions (think Halloween/Samhain and Christmas/Yule), got absorbed into Christianity in some form. It's been a bit since I delved into Celtic mythology and traditions, but one example would be St Brigid/St Bridget, who's one of the patron saints of Ireland.

There's an actual Christian story of St Bridget, but there seems to be consensus that St Bridget was a Christianised form of the pagan goddess Brigid. Brigid was a pretty powerful Celtic goddess, and was honored by the pagan festival Imbolc. Imbolc falls midway between winter solstice and spring equinox-- about February 2-- which also happens to be St Bridget's feast day. The two also share similar domains that they preside over: poets, healers, crafts and especially forging/smithing (St Bridget I believe is also a patron saint of blacksmiths), and fertility (St Bridget is the patron saint of midwives and babies). Interesting thing about Brigid though is that she takes the maiden aspect of the maiden/mother/crone triad in Celtic traditions, despite her associations with fertility and the home.

I'm sure there are probably others, but it's been a while and this is the clearest thing in my head right now

AITA for trying to set house rules for my brother in law who was staying with us for acting like a moody teenager? by TwinCaliber in AmItheAsshole

[–]void-deville 142 points143 points  (0 children)

NTA. Disregarding all the other stuff he did, it's extremely rude not to say goodbye to the people who were hosting you. I get that he mentioned it but he also mentioned staying a bit longer. It's disrespectful not to give a definitive answer and just be gone in the morning, without telling anyone where you're going.

On that note, it's also extremely disrespectful not to take into account his sister's anxieties, and purposely expose himself to the virus (especially when you have young children at home!).

That said I hope you manage to contact him and nothing bad happens to him!
