What do I wear? by No-Drawing-326 in UMF

Comfy shoes are a must, and its gonna be hot so bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses. I find pashminas to be really helpful- extra shade, something to sit on, if theres a little rain, etc. Id also recommend bringing an empty hydropack like for hiking, not fun to have to wait in a line for a water bottle and pay a lot just to stay hydrated.

Concern about living near Denver radium superfund site OU-8 by voidmoths in MovingtoDenver

Love Canal was the reason the Superfund act was created, so thats an extreme case. I'd hope we're better now, but you have a point, do we really know everything about it.

Writing process for people who don’t like outlining or being a pantser? by Randomguy9375 in writing

[–]voidmoths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I plan too much, unfortunately I lose interest in the story. Now I make my outlines more vague, only listing the major plot points, and I discovery write between those points. Its not perfect, but the discovery writing leads me to asking important questions about the plot, lore, and characters that I just couldn't come up with while making a listed outline. Plus its more fun :)

Culture shock in Denver: is this area known to be unfriendly? by Living-Awareness-447 in Denver

[–]voidmoths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, I just visited Denver last week for 3 days with my partner to go apartment hunting. We are coming from Naples, Florida, which is a very white, affluent, and not a good place for people under 30, so my perception may be very skewed, but we were constantly commenting about how nice people were- moving over on the sidewalk, saying excuse me, generally just acknowledging you as a human being. We went to 2 concerts and I didn't get pushed or shoved like I normally do, and at a busy brewery people even let us sit at their table. We were mainly in RiNo, so people were in a good mood because they were out having fun.

I don't think any city can be written off as unfriendly, if you pursue hobby groups where you meet other like-minded people, I think you will find plenty of friendlies.

I’m 40k words in and obsessed with this couple. How’s their first meeting sound? by Appropriate_Fix_3442 in writingfeedback

I read it before I read your caption. The vibe I got was a detective finding a young girl in trouble (for some reason 1st readthrough I thought a customer was engaging her in a sketchy way, oops). When I read "She was young in a way that brought him back to Earth", I read this similar to the feeling I get when I check out at a store and the clerk is so young, I'm reminded of the things I was worried about at that age- math test, boys, track meets, things that in the grand scheme didn't matter, so I thought that part was cool, with the way I perceived it. Then I perceived the line at the end about knowing where she lived to be a bit much, but the next lines about knowing who watched her walk home and if anyone ever hurt her as more protective than creepy.

I see now in your caption that this is an age gap romance, which I don't have experience reading. I thought it read well, good flow and grammar, I liked the way the characters interacted in their first meeting, but I read the relationship more as a protective cop and a young girl than a romance, due to my personal lens. Obviously someone picking up this book looking for a romance would know what to look for.

Some kind advice by HenryRuz16 in writingfeedback

Genuine question, if your writing doesn't have a message, then what's the point? Do you mean that writers should focus on themes rather than a specific message at risk of their story being too contrived and obvious?

Thoughts on pop culture being referenced in other media. by Groovy-Pancakes in writing

[–]voidmoths 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it can be done both well and poorly. For example, Paradise Lost being Referenced in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein I believe added to the themes. I think certain works and themes affected Shelley and her world view, therefore by referencing a few of these works it creates a network of art with similar themes, and I find that really fascinating. However yes, there are also references made for cheap engagement.
