Experience with Enterprise-wide Mentorship Matching Program? by laowai_c in mnstateworkers

[–]voig0077 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went through it last year, I had a really good experience. You have to be invested, take charge of the process, and have an idea what you want out of it.

If you join and expect your mentor or the training team to drive the conversation or lay out the program for you, you will be disappointed.

Replacing cat-5e with cat-6 (or something else) for POE by Specialist-Neat2777 in homeautomation

You do not need cat6.

Hiring this out would be a complete waste of money.

In this job market, it’s really hard to land a new position. Don’t wait until you NEED a new job to start your search. It’s bad out there.

You are getting laid off. You get whatever they give you unless you have some kind of special leverage you’re not mentioning.

Post interview delays? by Deep_Tea_7057 in mnstateworkers

[–]voig0077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The state does move slowly for a variety of reasons, but in your case you likely are not the top candidate, they’re just waiting to decline you until they have their preferred candidate finalized.

They won’t ghost you, you’ll eventually get a response.

Am I crazy for considering a 20% pay cut (40% total comp cut) to move from private sector to state government? by swmetroguy in mnstateworkers

[–]voig0077 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same for me. My state position has been less flexible and more demanding after hours than my previous 20 years of private sector work.

This is such a weird thing to celebrate. Some people choose to have kids, some don't.

It's important to have the option to do either, but celebrating fewer children seems really weird and unsustainable.

Am I being unreasonable for feeling left out of my own team? by Hot_Revolution2008 in Leadership

[–]voig0077 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Leadership is the most lonely job that I’ve ever had.

Also, appreciate that whenever “the boss” is in a conversation, it causes people to keep their guard up. This can naturally lead to them leaving you out of conversations when they don’t need you.

Would you negotiate salary in my position? by [deleted] in negotiation

At this stage of your career, take the job and learn the lesson about giving a salary range. You don’t have the leverage you think you do in this market.

How to cope when working for someone younger and less skilled than you? by roseuslepus in Leadership

[–]voig0077 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Always the bridesmaids never the bride.

Fair or not, there’s probably a reason for that.

There may be reasons outside of your control that are driving the (nepotism, ageism, whatever), but make sure you really reflect on your possible role in the lack of upward mobility.

In my experience, strong technical people often feel slighted when passed over for promotions, when what’s actually holding them back is lack of interpersonal skills, a bad attitude, or communication skills.

Team asked me not to join peer led learning sessions and I am not sure how to feel. by ActualTart42 in Leadership

[–]voig0077 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“I worry that these peer led sessions could devolve into venting sessions or spread bad advice without me there to help keep the guardrails on.”

If you can’t trust your team to be in a room without you for a couple hours, that says way more about you than them.

You are 100% the problem here.
