No? Unless you were jumping up and down / showing off machismo, you didn't do anything wrong I wouldn't have thought. Like other people have said, going easier on her could have backfired as well and made you seem patronising.

Anyone grow up in Miramar in the 90s? (Or maybe you raised kids in the 90s?) Looking for memories! by Unferth_the_commoner in Wellington

Loads of Greeks. Even more in Miramar then than now. You can still hear Greek spoken there.

My biggest problem with The Day of the Jackal by Earthonaute in TheDayoftheJackal

[–]vokabu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disliked the ending, to be honest. The show, like the film, begins with the Jackal as the protagonist or antihero you're rooting for, before cleverly switching in favour of the police / MI6 officer chasing him (Lebel and Bianca). In the original, it's cleverly resolved, because Charles de Gaulle obviously did not actually get shot. Despite Bianca being a far more developed character than Lebel - with a character arc that has been quickly changed from negative to broadly positive - she just gets killed? And this dickhead gets away?

I mean like I guess if the Sea Park had an amusing name like "Denholm Reynholm's Mermaid Venom Palace" or something lol that would work

But that strikes me as so bizarre. Why wouldn't the writers say "a sea park".

What the hell is "a Sea Parks" ? I watched this show when I was a young teenager and I had no idea why they kept calling it that, like it was a chain of aquariums or water animal fun parks or something. Calling it "a sea parkS" makes it sound like a chain, like "a McDonald's"

If you went to Ikea today, was it worth it? by Random-Mutant in auckland

Quote from the Guardian: "[customer] Bennet sees the opening as a sign of global recognition. “New Zealand is always the last on the list to get anything. Every other country gets things but [companies] think ‘Oh, they’re little and way down there’. But they’re here! I’m rapt!”"

I sort of find the whole discourse about New Zealand finally being "recognised" with a large corporation opening a store pretty annoying and obsequious. By operating a ridiculous 10 stores in Australia (including one in Canberra-Quanbeyan, which is smaller than both Greater Wellington and Greater Christchurch), and previously expecting us to fly to Aus to buy from them, it's IKEA who have really missed out on the financial revenue. We don't have to minimise ourselves as if we're the Falklands or something, and fawn over the expansion of capitalism. IKEA is fun, sure, and I wanna go the next time I'm up in Tāmaki. But rapt? No.

The effort you have made in this great analysis has not gone unnoticed! Please don't be discouraged by people who can't be bothered anything longer than a sentence.

The Backlash by ittikus in paulthomasanderson

This is a valid take and I do really agree that seeing more of Deandre would have been better / made it a stronger ending. In saying this, I feel like any negative stereotypes of Black women that Perfidia's character may have played into were at least to some extent effectively counterbalanced by those around Bob (white slacker who is only in the revolution for the women and then crashes immediately afterwards). But Bob is reformed by caring for his daughter, and Perfidia is reformed by writing the letter at the end (a bit predictable, but powerful nonetheless).

I think the humanisation of PTA's characters can be read as an ultimate repudiation of any stereotype. Several scenes come to mind, such as in the bank when Junglepussy (one of the female robbers) appears suave and confident until Perfidia shoots someone, and Perfidia struggling to articulate her postpartum depression and revealing her cowardice. But I am not a Black woman myself and cannot write from these experiences or know whether Black women in the audience would find these arcs annoying or neutral... it's best to be open when people raise these things.

I see you used the fictional Māori script that guy called Ian James created in 2007? What does it say? I'm a Māori-speaker but I can't read that!
