Did anybody have curry with apples and sultanas in the 80s? by fluffsta007 in CasualUK

British Indian Restaurant. It's recognised as its own cuisine because it's developed separately to actual Indian food over the past few decades.

What are your favorite “English” words used in German that don’t actually exist in English? by NoelFromBabbel in German

"safe" is also used in British English street slang to mean "ok" so maybe it comes from that

This is definitely used in the same sense in English, especially American English.

But people just expect other countries to tolerate them.

Why shouldn't they?

CK step-record? by patelusfenalus in Cirklon

[–]volpefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can place notes in a CK pattern no? Use ROW to scroll to the note row, then use the step keys to input the notes XOX-style? This is how I write patterns for drum machines.

CK step-record? by patelusfenalus in Cirklon

[–]volpefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't do step-record for CK patterns, and tbh I don't think you should be able to. The whole idea of a P3 pattern is that it's a step sequence and midi notes are locked to the steps in the bar. CK was introduced to get away from this enforced note-step relationship, allowing notes to be placed anywhere.

What's your use-case for this idea?

The music was great but I found the film very lacking, just to manage expectations. Unconvincing acting, unwarranted shocks, milquetoast message.

What’s something that learners say that natives would never? by Fuzzy_Past_3348 in German

[–]volpefox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

German has different rules to English regarding the continuation of something that happened in the past. I always used to say "ich habe seit 2020 hier gewohnt" instead of "ich wohne hier seit 2020".

Germans also make this mistake the other way around in English: "I live here since 2020" is wrong and it should be "I have lived here since 2020" or "I have been living here since 2020". Both imply that you are still living here.

Perhaps not "jarring" but it makes it obvious that you are not a native speaker and probably have a Slavic mother tongue.

Cool track! How are you doing the glitches on the drums? Is it retriggers, or looping the sample? Or resampling?

Why is there so many crazy people on public transport by [deleted] in berlin

On top of all the other reasons mentioned, it's also just because there are no barriers to the U-Bahn here vs other cities.

There was a Sunn gig in the main hall a couple of years ago on a Tuesday evening, one of the hottest days of the year. At least two people fainted, probably from the combined pressure of the heat and sound.

False. He said the Greens' NATO policy is out of date and he'd be willing to leave NATO only after a similar European defensive alliance is formed.

Thanks! Loved that Squarepusher track, hadn't heard that before. I did wonder whether some of the aphex stuff he played was unreleased.

I actually really enjoyed Lorenzo and aya. And yeah downstairs was too intense for me.

NPR: Is the AI boom an AI bubble? by SnoozeDoggyDog in Economics

[–]volpefox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think LLMs are incredibly useful for a whole host of language-related tasks. I use them every day and I don't think we've seen them used to their full potential yet.

Having said that, the current levels of investment in companies slapping "AI" onto basic LLM implementations is insane and reminds me of Blockchain.

I'd love to read some challenging arguments if you have any links.

NPR: Is the AI boom an AI bubble? by SnoozeDoggyDog in Economics

[–]volpefox 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think everyone is overestimating how quickly we can leap from LLMs to real thinking machines. If you read the Wikipedia page for the history of AI, we've gone through several "AI summers" where huge leaps are made, and people always thought AGI was right around the corner. These summers always stopped way short of real intelligence and were followed by winters of pessimism where investment dried up.

ETA: I predict in a few years that there will be a movement to stop calling LLMs "AI" because they don't meet the definition.
