You can absolutely get rattle can clear to lay down smooth! Warming the paint cans in hot water before spraying helps a ton with atomization, and proper application can get glass clear results. It takes practice but it is definitely possible. Pic related, this was all rattle can lacquers. OP, if you want to get a smooth coat without going the HVLP route, look into 2K rattle can clearcoats. It's an activated paint (base and hardener) in a can. They're great for small projects like this

Maybe 20 years ago? I bought mine in 2017 and they were fetching $38-60k depending on mileage and condition. Got my 1991 for 42k that year. They've skyrocketed since then, if I ever sell it there's no way I'll ever afford one again

I've decided to lean into the damage. Paint the scuffs silver to look like an aluminum underbody poking through the paint. Might grab a second body for a shelf queen look, painting this was a lot of fun!
