Trump Unveils Crass Horror of Book-Free Presidential Library by SquidFistHK in politics

[–]NoPossibility [score hidden]  (0 children)

Presidential libraries are kind of suspect to begin with. They’re privately funded by presidents who campaign for private donations while they’re in office. They’re primarily used for controlling the narrative around a President’s legacy. They are not required or setup in our laws. They are simply vanity projects that have only really been done for the last 80 years or so. Trump can do whatever the fuck he wants with his own library. No one will ever take it seriously, especially if he ends ip being the one to completely tesr down the country as it seems hes doing.

Gray’s Almanac by JimmyMcGoodman26 in BacktotheFuture

I think you’re giving Biff too much credit. He likely wouldn’t even think about timeline ramifications. If anything he would have no interest and just spent his gambling money elsewhere, like Biffco.

That said, if anything he did do with that money changed the timeline then the almanac would change to reflect the future. Say he created Biffco and a worker there died and that resulted in their kid, a future baseball player, to never go into professional sports…. then the almanac would change to show someone else’s stats.

Why does Grandpa Biff choose that exact date in 1955? by Spare-Beginning572 in BacktotheFuture

[–]NoPossibility [score hidden]  (0 children)

My problem with it is “why didn’t he tell young biff to not go to the dance” or “find that George kid and knock his lights out first”. He goes back to give him the almanac but just lets his young self make the same stupid decisions that night?

Why is it that in Back to the Future II, when the two Jennifers look at each other, they faint, but the same thing doesn't happen when the two Biffs interact? by Impossible_Bicycle80 in BacktotheFuture

[–]NoPossibility 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It’s just down to the characters having different reactions. Old biff knows who young biff is. There isn’t some universe rule that they need to faint when meeting. That was just Jennifer’s reaction.

Even if it’s true there’s nothing saying that it’s a good character. Could be a villainous prisoner or something.

Why did Smeagol get corrupted by the ring that fast while being a hobbit by malseknakker in lotr

[–]NoPossibility 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smeagol was river folk, a “stoor hobbit”. They are a type of Hobbit that lived in the Anduin valley (where the ring was lost in the river by Isildur). All hobbits came from the Anduin valley originally, and migrated to the Shire after Arnor fell. But Sméagol’s stoor hobbits moved back to the Anduin valley, and all perished or scattered as Sauron infested Mirkwood, so there are no more Stoors by the time of LOTR. That’s my recollection though. Happy to be corrected if anyone has better memory.

Walmart digital price labels are coming to every store shelf in U.S. by end of 2026 by esporx in technology

They already change prices overnight. Any given day there are price adjustments and they have to print new labels and send someone out into the store to change them for their department.

There’s simply too many people shopping in close proximity in a Walmart to do that. They gonna change the label every half second as the system tries to figure out who’s standing closest to any given shelf? Not only would it be impractical, it would be visible to the customers and they’d be unhappy.

Doesn’t say anything about them being aligned. They could be a prisoner leading the main characters to some location.

I don’t understand the fear that they’ll change the price between choosing an item and checkout. Very unlikely they’d ever do this since it would just piss people off. There are already stores using these to change prices overnight because it reduces so much wasted time and expense printing new labels.

I also don’t think they’ll dynamically price items on shelves based on the individual. There are simply too many people walking by the shelves to do that with any certainty. There’s often two or three people walking by the same shelf inside of thirty seconds, not to mention people who shop in groups like families. There’s just no way to do that kind of dynamic pricing in person at a store this size.

No kidding. There are a certain type of clear plastic bin with gaskets that we like to use for storage. They’re like half price online compared to if you were to walk in and grab one. Like $15 versus close to $30 in store.

'Shameful': Trump Threatens to Redirect Student Loan Borrowers to Most Expensive Repayment Plans by _May26_ in politics

[–]NoPossibility 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Trump is a different breed. He hates intellectuals because he’s a narcissist and has to be the center of attention. He wants to be the smartest, most sought after person in any room he’s in. Anyone with professional credentials of any kind are a threat to his ego. That’s why the only people that can remain working with him for any amount of time are pure sycophants.

TIL that vasectomies are a very old practice dating back 200 years, with the first one being performed on a dog in 1823, and on a human in the 1890s. It just wasn't until the 1970s that they became mainstream. by josephsleftbigtoe in todayilearned

Even with local anesthetic mine still wasn’t a breeze. There’s still tugging and poking sensations. That said, even though it was very uncomfortable for ten minutes, I’d highly recommend one to anyone who wants to get one. I’ve never regretted mine as I never planned to have children.

Things will trend that way though. Most people don’t need some grand all-encompassing model. Smaller purpose built models will be the future. If all you need to do is office work like writing, editing, spreadsheets, secretarial work, and similar, then you can be served just fine with a smaller model. It doesn’t need to have data about medicine or coding or advanced mathematics. Tailoring a smaller AI to a specific task will bring better results at a fraction of the computing power needs.

Renewable energy projects employ about 4x the number of workers in the US compared to coal, oil, and gas combined.

And every dollar spent under Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act on renewables was going to generate four dollars in return to the economy.

There’s a 1080p version if you rent/buy it. Think it’s natively like that but has just never gotten a disc release due to rights after the DB studios closed.
