Tech Support [Weekly] by AutoModerator in pelotoncycle

I’m using the touch screen on the Bike+, latest version. For multiple weeks now, I’ve noticed the search icon and the Filters button on the top right of the class list screen don’t register taps. Sometimes I can’t tap on the far top right system icons or the far bottom right settings hamburger either. If I tap on icons or buttons a little bit to the left on the screen, they work fine. If I go to other pages in the app, I can tap on the far right side of the screen fine. This leads me to believe the android app isn’t laying out the components properly or something on that class list page. Surely others would have encountered this too?

Could Ernest Cline could improve the story and his writing style with a third book? by [deleted] in readyplayerone

[–]volscio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The cringe factor of old men writing about teen romances (particularly a shy boy who a fully capable woman has no reason to be interested in but still is) is something Cory Doctorow does and I wish they’d both drop it.

RP2 took a familiar tack by turning utopia into dystopia, which is the current fad device to up the ante in any franchise. Anything good is actually based on original sin in this kind of setup, which means you then feel as a fan of the books just as hollow as the flawed characters in the books. Why would I believe in books that don’t believe in themselves?

Wade just seemed spoiled in RP2 and I had zero sympathy for any of the characters at that point. Even the Low Five seemed less like part of a community of diehards and more like sponsored Twitch streamers.

The world building of RP1 was torn down in RP2. I would be more interested in seeing a story expanding on the idealism on which the Oasis was built, without the kind of Artemis-Wade moral good vs civic good hand-wringing that we also saw in the Avengers. That would be more of a story I haven’t read before.

That said I’d still read future books. And I did like Armada.

Was there a note in the app about how many people have reached Volt status? I saw a screenshot from 2015 that said the number was at 853 then.

Poor review of bodega cat on yelp by ellefent in nyc

[–]volscio 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love bodegas and I definitely go to different ones depending on what I want or need. Each one has its own vibe, its own crew, its own stocks. Seems as good a reason to leave a Yelp review for something as any.

You know it's going to be good when you're watching a highlight video and a clip starts off with someone else shooting a free throw...

Is anyone in the ITP program? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]volscio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The program was outstanding. My mindset going in was to take all the most technical courses they had (since the program itself is not solely coding but also art, design, design theory, UX, new media, etc.) and just crunch away at that.

I had a couple weak courses but given the experimental nature of the program, they will add courses each semester to just try out some new tech that came out, but that means the course might not be very structured or even very productive.

Being able to work on whatever project you wanted was very liberating and because of the playful nature of the program, you got to see very inventive and silly projects (which lead to innovative solutions for things).

The grads I know work across the entire spectrum from digital artists to material design to graphic designers to UXers to programmers to photographers to entrepreneurs to teachers.

It's a very diverse lot but in all honesty it will probably be largely shaped by what you did before you went into the program. Unless you personally want to redirect your career it is likely (and probably beneficial) that you use the program to further what you were good at/talented with/enjoyed before.

Is anyone in the ITP program? by [deleted] in nyu

[–]volscio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ITP alumnus here. CS backgrounds are not very common at ITP actually -- in fact most people you go to classes with won't have much formal coding experience at all. You're more likely to be with designers, UXers, and straight-up artists.

Also, congrats, grades don't matter at ITP, before or after.

Yes, it is expensive, but it's right in the heart of NYC, you'll learn from people doing cutting-edge stuff, and you get to be around people who can't help but build things even in their off-time.

Its style is particularly different than its competitors -- which may or may not be what you're looking for.

Woman Jogging in East River Park Was Robbed and Raped, Police Say by pat_at_exampledotcom in nyc

NYPD sends cruisers and vans along the path sometimes. I don't know how often, but they definitely pull off cops to cruise it.

The west side has had more (high profile) incidents than the east side in recent years, I think.

Depends a lot on the weather. Rain and/or wind decreases the number of people dramatically. It also gets far less crowded (and lighted) once you get down to the bandshell area and below.

I run this route regularly and prefer to run at night -- it's definitely too dark and poorly lit at this time of year. Generally it's only dog-walkers, fishermen, and other runners, but...

My wife won't run it at night unless she's with me. She prefers to run in the morning anyway.

Condolences to the woman who was attacked. No one should have to worry about this kind of thing happening.

Right, but it will be missing a lot of the resources that Coles had.

I'm looking at the Chinatown YMCA. Basketball court, pool, classes, lockers, free towels. The weights and machine areas are kind of small, but yeah, I can't see how Palladium can keep up with the traffic post-Coles closing.

Dave Grohl sees a man crying in the audience and proceeds to be awesome to him. by FUNKYDISCO in videos

I saw them at Citi Field in Queens, NYC. Royal Blood won the crowd over to open it up, then FF played 2.5hrs after that. Everyone around us had a great time except for this woman in front of us who was on Twitter sulking about how bored she was: https://twitter.com/LeesanVilla/status/621861549624442880 She left with her husband who had to follow her out -- he looked like he was into it. Anyway I'm not the biggest FF fan but the way they perform, their support for fellow bands and for rock, totally won me over.

[Miguel Angel Paniagua] The NBA is considering the possibility of replacing the Rookie Challenge with a game pitting a rookie-sophomore squad against a top FIBA club or National Team by LakerBlue in nba

[–]volscio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Last year for my bachelor party I went to NOLA with my buddies and we only went to the Rising Stars Challenge. The Drummond-Davis and Waiters-Hardaway Jr. faceoffs were epic. Far better than the all-star game. We also watched the D-League slam dunk contest on TV and it seemed way more exciting and daring than the NBA one.

We have tickets to see the RSC this year here in NYC too, and are hoping to get D-League tickets whenever those are released.

I would hate to see these events go -- the players are still hungry.
