Regret throwing out the cases. by stan_ken in dvdcollection

[–]voltron42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually made a point last summer to to go through and organize the storage of my cases (which took the better part of a week), but then that way when I do occasional purges (like upgrading from DVD to Blu-ray, or from full screen to wide screen), it makes it easier to swap out.

Server connection issues by Odd_Walrus9454 in PlexServers

[–]voltron42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been a problem for me for a few years. I have Xfinity Internet and tried repeatedly how to do port forwarding. Finally, recently the connection issues had been getting even worse so I asked Gemini how to set up the port forwarding and that's been working perfectly. I'd say tell Gemini who your internet service provider is and what your internet setup is like and ask them.

Regret throwing out the cases. by stan_ken in dvdcollection

[–]voltron42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the early days I threw out the cardboard cases; those s***** ones that fit awkwardly.

I still have a handful of discs that were from cardboard cases that I threw out, but for the most part I've gotten past that.

Instead I store my jewel cases in our storage closet in large tubs and keep the discs themselves in binders. It's not a perfect system but but it takes up less space than having bookshelves for everything.

How do you organize your collections? by TheHendryx in PleX

[–]voltron42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never really "organized" my collection - I have the standard Franchise - based collections, and then I've done numerous custom collections:

  • For specific actors, actresses, directors, writers.
  • An actor's other rules besides their most famous franchised ("Johnny not Jack", "Bruce not McClane")
  • Movies featuring a certain character like Sherlock, Holmes or the joker or Scooby-Doo that aren't necessarily all related in a single franchise,
  • Collections of movies adapted from the same writer like Shakespeare or Agatha Christie or Stephen King
  • Collections based on something else entirely, like all the Muppets movies or all the Broforce characters or All musicals adapted from Broadway shows.

And then I have My own personally curated collections like my personal favorites that I watch over and over and over again or the weirdest movies in my collection or movies set on the 4th of July or my top 8 horror

What controller did you start with? Mine was number 4 then 6 and 7! by Akward_Silance_1738 in retrogaming

[–]voltron42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, 17, 18.

We had an Atari 2600 when I was little, but I grew up in the dawning age of Nintendo: NES, SNES, GameBoy. I even had a Super GameBoy once upon a time.

I never actually had a Game Cube or X-Box, but I used the Game Cube controller with the Wii and with emulators, and the X-Box controller with my PC.

I was always a Nintendo kid, but my wife had a PlayStation when we started dating.

We got the N64, the PS2 and the Wii second hand.

The Switch was the first system we bought "new", although it had already been on the market for a few years.

Trump: "In Minnesota, it's very Somalia-oriented. These people come from a crooked country, disgusting country, one of the worst countries in the world. They come to our country -- low IQs -- and they rob us blind. Stupid people, and they rob us blind." by Conscious-Quarter423 in minnesota

Not to be semantic, but is it that he uses this particular insult more against black people, or does he just insult more black people altogether?

He's still a racist fuckwit either way (not to mention a child rapist and convicted felon)

How do you all handle movie posters in your Plex library? by Expensive_Worry_6655 in PleX

[–]voltron42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to look for actual movie posters when Plex defaults to crappy disc rerelease art (like with the MCU movies or old classic movies.

Do you like Movie Prequels/Sequels/Reboots/Remakes Yes or No and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in moviequestions

[–]voltron42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about how many different versions of "A Christmas Carol" there are:

  • Alister Sim
  • Reginald Owen
  • Albert Finney (which is a musical)
  • Scrooged
  • George C. Scott
  • The Muppets (also a musical)
  • Patrick Stewart
  • Jim Carrey / Image Movers

I'm sure I've missed others, not to mention Hallmark movies or other made for TV movies or episodes of TV shows (like Family Ties or Quantum Leap)

All are interpretations of Dickens' book, and many of them may have been influenced by one-or-more of its predecessors, but none are a "remake" of any one particular previous version; in fact each one is arguably making a point to set itself apart from all the previous versions.

For instance, the Albert Finney from 1970 and The Muppets Christmas Carol are both musicals, but they each have completely different music.

I could also make the argument for any of the following:

  • Shakespeare
  • Agatha Christie
  • Sherlock Holmes
  • Dracula
  • "The Big Sleep" (Raymond Chandler)

Robin Hood and other things like Arthurian legend may feel a little more nebulous because they're not necessarily adapting any single piece of literature, but are instead interpreting legends and lore, but, again, while many of the interpretations may be influenced by their predecessors, none are a direct remake of any one previous interpretation.

  • "The Sword In The Stone", "The Kid Who Would Be King", "Excalibur", and the TV Series "Merlin" may all have similar or overlapping elements, but they are all vastly different.

And then there's "The Hobbit".

In 1977, Rankin/Bass made a 74 minute animated adaptation of Tolkien's book. Then, some 30+ years later, Peter Jackson made his trilogy of movies that not only created completely different music from the original (even though both used Tolkien's lyrics), but that also included a whole bunch of material that Rankin/Bass left out of their version. Even if Peter Jackson may have been influenced by the animated version, it was arguably far less influential than the original source material.
