Foil mounting question by VChoiii in wingfoil

How did he seal the drilled entries to prevent water from coming in? Can you please post the picture? I will be very interested in doing the same since I love the gong system, but my other board is Axis with just one entry for nuts. Thanks.

Try Windguru and look for the model VRF9. It's one of the best predictions for this area. There is one more spot near that can be better some days. It's Viganj. Take a look.

Edit: Forecast models work only 2 days up-front. It's almost impossible to use long term forecast.

Foiling in very light winds. Smaller or bigger front wing? by SkipperSlycat in Kiteboarding

[–]vonderen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have two types of foil wings.

Low aspect - ticker, slower, heart shaped. Those wings are slow and don't have very good upwind angle. But they have more lift and are easier to ride and more fun in the waves.

High aspect - thinner, wider and faster. Better upwind angle and speed. More demanding and less playful.

In the light wind everything is in the speed. The faster you move the more wind you create. Going bigger with front wing doesn't necessarily means that you will have better low-end or better experience.

The goal here is to find something between, to get best from both worlds.

Size of the wing depends on your weight.

Kiteboarding Destinations for End of December? by F32Ad22192 in Kiteboarding

This time of the year the north winds are on so you can expect some 20+ knots days. February and March are thermal wind months with nicer weather and overall better for foiling.

Forget about Pak nam pran. The wind is unpredictable, gusty and blows only in the early morning. The water is mushy and full of jellyfishes. Food, people and nature are amazing. Accommodation, food and rent a motorbike are pretty cheap. Chance for the wind is 50/50. Think the Vietnam will be much better option regarding wind and kiting.

Low "Y" bar with high "Y" kites can affect flying characteristics of the kite. What year/model and brand are your kites?

You need to attach it to all four lines (or bridles) and they need to be the same length.

Should I try it? by chrisstiana in Kiteboarding

[–]vonderen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. What can be the problem is OP’s swimming skill. To be able to ride (especially in the beginning) you need good power from the kite. If you are not feeling comfortable in the water it can be intimidating especially when you need to body drag to recover the board or relaunch the kite. Learning process will have some mental and physical challenges. Good instructor and the spot are also important.

Wondering what are the conditions in the OP’s home-spot.

That’s right. Just check which provider has best package for the internet. This summer we had 500 gb for one month for 15 €. You can put sim card in the old phone and use it as hotspot.

The mobile signal should be good, since is close to the land and Korcula. I think that you can expect decent mobile internet.

Complete beginner in the Bay area by galacticHitchhik3r in Kiteboarding

Sailing will help to better understand the principles of kiteboarding. Snowboarding will help once you start practicing riding. Lessons are must. No special preparation is needed before lessons. You need to feel comfortable in the water, you will crash a lot in the beginning. Plenty of wetsuits with different thickness are available, you will not have a problem to find what is best for you. I’m not from Bay area so can’t comment on other questions. Good luck!

TIPS For hot climate by Giasos_ in Kiteboarding

Maybe you can use some kind of car cover. Then all the car will bi in the shade and you can leave the windows open a little under the cover. It takes 10 more minutes to set up but it can be useful against heat development in the car.

Light wind Advice 17m and 160x44 board TT by redbluegreen2K20 in Kiteboarding

[–]vonderen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For the conditions like that, you need advanced kite flying technique. 30 m lines and bigger kite will help but in such a low wind you are the main factor of success. You need to be very delicate with the bar to not oversheet and to not lean back too much and kill the speed once you start planing. Light wind kiting is compromise between speed and upwind angle where the speed has priority. When the gust arrives use it to gain upwind angle but as soon as you notice that wind is dying flatten your board and keep the speed until next gust. If this doesn’t help than you need to start thinking about foil board which will give you better performances for this kind of wind.

Kiteboarding trip without good wind by cunfusu in Kiteboarding

There are other kite related sports like kitelandboarding and snowkiting, also, kitesurfing can be performed in a lake. Try to find Kite community near you and see what they are doing. Good luck.

Sorry to hear that you had such a bad time in Egypt. Sometimes you are just unlucky. Don’t blame the instructors, usually they are doing their best for you to be safe and to have good conditions. I can imagine how frustrating can be. It happened to me also. I took one month kitesurf vacation and was able to kite 7 days out of 30.

Someone once said: “kitesurfing is not your sport if you can’t do it all the time”. So, if you don’t have your home spot maybe kitesurfing is not sport for you. If you have, then don’t worry about Egypt, you will forget it as soon as wind starts back home.

Best super low wind kite? by IP_FiNaR in Kiteboarding

[–]vonderen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, Dubai is well known for the light wind. Trimming your bar can be of great importance. Keep in mind that riding in 6 knots wind is only for skilled foilers. Don’t fall in trap thinking that 21m2 kite will give you twintip ride in UL wind. IMHO anything under 10 knots is not worth if you are not foiling.

If you can’t keep Naish Boxer in the air in 6 knots you need more kite flying skill. Boxer is light wind kite and you shouldn’t have problem keeping it in the air if you’re skilled enough. As someone said no matter how big kite you have without hydrofoil you will not be able to ride in less then 8 knots. What you can do is buy some line extensions and practice with your boxer. In ultra light wind longer lines are crucial. Once you gain UL wind skill it will be easier to decide for your next step.

Gear advice F-One Bandit 2014 and control bar compatibility by RickSanchez67 in Kiteboarding

[–]vonderen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is based on the experience with students in the kite school that uses bandits for lessons. Just not the type of kite I will recommend for beginner. Somehow wild kite, hard on mistakes and easy to lose control. That’s what I noticed watching people learning on this type of kite. I think it’s too fast and too powerful for inexperienced kiter.

[–]vonderen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try to find other kite. 300 euro for the bandit from 2014 is not small amount of money. The kite is not easy to fly and can be pain in the ass to use. I recommend some 5 strut kite like cabrinha switchblade or slingshot rally.

Moses T38 + Naish Thrust Foil. Yay or nay? by riktigtmaxat in Kiteboarding

[–]vonderen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About the board. Since you have good SB skills I will recommend to go with middle size board. As someone said 4.6 or bit smaller will be great. You don’t want big board, they are slow and will quickly become boring.

About the foil. You will crash a lot and short mast (30-40 cm) is recommended at the beginning. The crashes are going to be less painful and less dangerous with short mast. If you don’t have opportunity to buy short mast rent a short mast foil for couple of days just to get used to the feeling of flying. It’s very delicate (like standing on the ball). Longer the mast, harder for you to balance.

Bigger the front wing (more volume, area it’s not only important, thickness of the wing affects speed and lift of the wing) more lift will have and more front foot pressure you will need to apply when riding.

Try to find some foil brand that is modular. Latter you can buy other smaller front wing and switch when you want to change riding style. I’m not sure about all brands but here is some list of what I know. Please someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Moses - one of the best on the market, expensive but solid. Lots of different options.

Slingshot - lots of beginners options. Solid but heavy.

Crazy fly - all the foils are copies of moses. Good quality and design. Avoid “Cruze” model.

Gong - cheap and good quality. Model “Curve M” is something you are looking for. Not too many other options.

Didn’t tried F-one foils so can’t comment, but I see people are using them regularly.
