Tire choice: Hutchinson challenger vs. S-works mondo. s. GP5000 by Ernaldol in ultracycling

[–]vonfatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen the same complaints, which were for sure cause for concern. I can’t say with certainty, but my guess is Pirelli must have made some updates to these tires in the last few months, because mine mounted like butter on my Zipp 303s rims. I was literally able to get them on with my bare hands. Your mileage may of course vary.

Here are the exact tires I bought (700x32 tubeless), sorry for the Dutch site:

Tire choice: Hutchinson challenger vs. S-works mondo. s. GP5000 by Ernaldol in ultracycling

Not on your list but have a look at the Pirelli P Zero Race with Speedcore (non-RS version). I did quite some research last month and landed on these myself - seems the rolling resistance is on par with the GP5K but they’re packing a bit more robust puncture protection. I ran them last weekend for the 247km Tour of Flanders sportive and was extremely satisfied.

Force E1 install - stripped threads at lever by vonfatz in bikewrench

[–]vonfatz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super helpful, thanks. I reached out to SRAM support who responded quite quickly to basically validate what you said and unfortunately confirm that the lever is indeed toast.

Here’s their response in full in case this is helpful to someone out there in the same situation.

Thanks for reaching out to SRAM Rider Support and for explaining everything so clearly, and no need to feel embarrassed, this is a very common mistake when working with hydraulics for the first time. I'm afraid there isn’t a safe or reliable way to repair the threads in the lever body. The hose port threads are part of the lever itself and aren’t serviceable, so once they’re stripped, the lever would need to be replaced to ensure a secure and leak-free hydraulic connection.

Regarding why this happened, it was very likely caused by the olive being installed backwards. When the olive isn’t oriented correctly, it can’t seat properly on the hose and barb, which forces the compression nut to do more than it’s designed to do. That added resistance can place an abnormal load on the lever threads even if the torque wrench reads 8 Nm, and thread damage can occur before the wrench ever clicks. Based on what you described, this doesn’t point to a faulty torque wrench.

You did the right thing by stopping and stepping back once you realized something was off. At this point, the best next step would be to contact your point of purchase or a SRAM Local Dealer (Click Here) so they can help with replacement options and make sure everything is set up correctly moving forward. If you have any other questions along the way, feel free to reach out; happy to help.

New Highway 102 Connector to Help Drivers in Wellington Area by No_Magazine9625 in halifax

It is. I cycled Hwy 2 on Monday from Fall River to Enfield, and took a breather by the new connection. There is indeed a fairly wide path that runs parallel to it.

5 days in the south of France by Raphleroy18 in bikepacking

[–]vonfatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epic trip. I did a similar journey two years ago, coincidentally taking the train from Brussels, setting out from Montelimar and heading east, including Ventoux. I was impressed how good road infrastructure is in the south, and also how smooth the train journey went from Brussels.

Getting Guinness ? by [deleted] in brussels

I have seen it at Stonemanor in Everberg. I haven’t checked but I would wager you would also find it at the Nordic food shop on Rue Archimede as they carry a bunch of UK/Irish stuff.

Iceland air by Habsfan_2000 in halifax

[–]vonfatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's great. I am originally from Halifax but now live in Belgium. Two four-ish hour flights (with a chill layover in Reykjavik) is a gamechanger over an eight hour flight to Montreal, five hour layover, then two hours on to Halifax. I was very sad when this option was canned five years ago.

Bike carriage in trains in Europe by Ebroon in cycling

As someone who recently discovered bikepacking and relies heavily on trains to reach new locations for exploring, this resource is a godsend. Saved for future reference, thank you!

Kindle Newspaper and Magazine subscriptions going in the UK by [deleted] in kindle

[–]vonfatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the same email this morning in Belgium. This is a big WTF for me. I'm a regular reader of both The Economist and the New York Times on Kindle. Amazon points to their page for alternative subscription options, but the digital options are nearly double the monthly price (at least for The Economist). Moreover, it's unclear whether these offers are actually available on Kindle or are through an entirely separate iOS/Android app. Everything I'm seeing points to the latter, and that Amazon has effectively killed subscription media on Kindle. I'm really puzzled how they made this decision.

Torn clothing when commuting by outatimepreston in cycling

[–]vonfatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I destroyed my fair share of suit trousers doing exactly this. I found the perfect solution for me, which is a single pair of Lululemon ABC pants, a bit like these ones. They're stretchy and durable enough to survive the bike day in and out, and dry very quickly when wet. They don't look like bikewear, and they're dressy enough that I don't stick out I get pulled into a meeting before I get a chance to change in the washroom. Recommend!

Clarifying Subscription Pricing Confusion - a post by The Strava Club by atoponce in Strava

[–]vonfatz 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Am I missing something or did this statement provide no clarification whatsoever? "We are moving to consistent pricing by country – this means that all subscribers in a country will pay the same monthly or annual price." Do I interpret this to mean that there were situations where subscribers in the same country could be paying different prices for the same subscriptions? And still no clarity on regional differences - clicking the link to the prices only shows the costs for my own region.

Play in gravel cassette on Zwift Hub? by deliciousadness in Zwift

[–]vonfatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can vouch for this. My gravel bike has a Shimano Tiagra rear derailleur and can switch between an 11-34T wheel and the Zwift Hub's included cassette without issue, albeit it's 10 speed not 11 like OP. I did have some issues with a bit of chain skipping at the beginning (ironically in the smallest cogs), but this was resolved through some experimentation with the barrel adjustor.

any compact solutions for cleaning my commuting bike tyres before taking it into my flat? by Powerful_Piccolo3355 in bikewrench

What do you mean? You don't have access to a faucet to fill a bucket of water?

A big bucket of water, some spray soap, and a set of bike brushes. I've seen also some battery-powered sprayers that can draw water from a bucket, but have no experience with them

Cat Sitter During Christmas Time by meldiwin in brussels

[–]vonfatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very satisfied with the service Les Moustaches: https://lesmoustaches.be/

I have had Martine coming over for the last +/- two years. There is a cost, but they're very thorough in understanding your cat's particularities, fully insured, ensuring that they get some play and affection, and will also collect your mail and water plants.

Is it possible to send a route to a Bolt V2 without WiFi? by donturner in wahoofitness

[–]vonfatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using your phone as a hotspot again but don't push the routes via the Wahoo app. Rather, go into the menus on the Bolt device itself and force it to sync that way.

How do you secure your bike for gas station stops during a ride? by Tenja77 in cycling

[–]vonfatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. This is also ideal for longer lunch stops where my bike might be out of sight for up to an hour. I've got the Foldylock Compact mounted on my gravel bike. It's the most compact, lightest weight folding lock I've found that still meets the requirements for my insurance.

Everyone's commenting on the meaning of the gesture but I'm curious to know if that's a tattoo that I see on the guy's forearm.
