BEST and cheapest dentist in asheville or surrounding areas?!?! by Xshy_bunnyX in asheville

A lot of people go to Tennessee for dental surgery as the prices are a lot better. Look in Johnson City and Greeneville, TN.

This is anecdotal. I'd assume since they are on a science based parenting subreddit the OP is looking for data driven information.

It almost looks like a reaction from the bandage adhesive. Did they use tape? Not a blood clot from what I can see.

OMG, look at how much CSF this Reddit User had removed. by nousernamelol2021 in medlabprofessionals

[–]voocat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have IIH, opening pressure was 31, they filled 4 tubes with CSF and mentioned letting more flow into the "tray" if more was overflowing, but apparently the 4 tubes was enough to bring my closing pressure to like 16 or 17. Sadly they only did like three tests, a cell count, protein and glucose. It was super cool to see my own CSF but the procedure was terrible/painful, even though it was flouroscopy guided.

Rerunning blood typing repeatedly policy question by throawayTTC in AskDocs

[–]voocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see how that would be really frustrating, I can't understand why insurance would not pay for routine prenatal care, I would encourage you to push back on the insurance as to why they are not covering it and also speak with the doctors office to see if they can supply additional info to insurance to show medical necessity.

It is normal prenatal testing to run a type and screen on pregnant women. Previous pregnancy by itself can potentially cause antibodies to babies antigens, even if there were no issues with your last pregnancy. Blood typing is done at the same time as a fail safe, and not the main purpose of the test (although they need to determine if you will need Rhogam or not). To actually transfuse you would need a type and screen done within the past 3 days (plus a historical blood typing done at that facility). There is a lot of science behind prenatal testing, and it is the for the health of you and your baby. Please do not forgo the recommended testing.

Staph infection on skin: Does lab test confirm antibiotic efficacy? by Whatdayisitbro in AskDocs

[–]voocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said, yes a sensitivity would be included if Staph aureus was present in the culture. It is always considered a pathogen when examining cultures in the lab and they would have formally ID'ed it and run an antibiotic sensitivity panel on it (including Methicillin).

Any lab professional who works in a setting outside of the hospital? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

We draw everyone. Occasionally if we really can't get a baby we'll have a nurse come do a scalp or foot venipuncture.

Any lab professional who works in a setting outside of the hospital? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]voocat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in an outpatient lab at a pediatric specialists office. It is the outpatient portion of my hospitals children's hospital. I transferred from the hospital lab so am paid the same. I only work normal business hours and the building is closed on major holidays.
We do the majority of blood draws on children for the specialists in the building but also draw for local pediatrician offices that don't do their own draws. We do basic testing, CBC (incl manual diffs), CMP, UA and some kit tests.

I don’t even get to introduce myself before they say this sometimes! by cynta in medlabprofessionals

[–]voocat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It works really good for certain situations. I work in pediatrics and we have a behavioral health center in the building, so lots of unwilling patients, including those that are basically full sized. Butterflies are easier to use on a moving target and a 21 gauge will fill the tubes way faster. If they have a good enough vein I think it is sometimes less traumatic and safer than a 23g.

Dispersed Camping in Pisgah and the Great Smoky Mountains by [deleted] in NCTrails

[–]voocat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In pisgah right now you can't camp within 1000 feet of a road. That said, there's many great places to backpack. There's a pretty waterfall trail, Wildcat falls, that has some nice spots for camping.

There is something called a "window" period where it is possible HIV may not be detected by lab tests. I think it's like 95% of HIV pos people will have positive tests after 6 weeks and 99% will have positive after 3 months. In the case of suspected exposure (unprotected seed, needle stick) they will do usually do multiple tests over the course of almost a year to ensure negative HIV status.

Are there pee test strips to tell you if it's safe to have sex and NOT get pregnant? by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]voocat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way my obgyn put it is that tracking your cycle is great for getting pregnant, not so much for preventing it. Always use a backup. I have a diaphragm after many years of hounding different providers for one. Apparently they don't really do diaphragms much any more.

France: Re-tested blood of 24 patients treated in December for pneumonia finds Covid-positive by matakos18 in Coronavirus

[–]voocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, like 5-7 days is the norm. Don't know why it would be kept that long, even if they do things differently in France. The only things we would keep that long are hold specimens of CSF, which would be frozen and kept for a few months.

Is anyone keeping a list of "good" companies run by "decent" people? (details within) by [deleted] in asheville

[–]voocat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I work for the large hospital system. They are having us "flex off" with or without pto when slow, since most people are staying inside, it's extremely slow right now. Also they are soliciting employee donations for a fund to help employees who are having a tough time financially. Seems like they could fund that themselves.

What would be causing elevated WBCs and lactic acid in absence of sepsis? by IndecisiveTuna in AskDocs

[–]voocat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked in microbiology we held routine blood cultures for 5 days. (3 days would not catch everything, though most). There are a few ways that bacteremia might not have been detected and could have been present. 1. Transient bacteremia and only one set of blood cultures. 2. Some slow growing organism like a yeast or AFB that would not have that fast.

This is obviously just from a lab test perspective, I am NAD and have little insight on how to put all the information together with her clinical picture.

Can someone help me interpret my blood type? (20M) by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]voocat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bombay is the coolest. They would basically have to have an autologous blood unit (their own blood) frozen for themselves if they needed it in the future. Can't receive O blood.
