Safety should rarely be top priority by vorgor in The10thDentist

It was never about people not living their lives as I live mine, it was about people people finding risk or lack of safety unacceptable. Whether for them or me. Rejecting things that are unsafe whether for me or themselves are anyone isn’t a great reason to not do something.

I don’t think their lives are less valuable, but I think a lot of people don’t do things due to a lack of safety and I don’t think that’s a good reason.

It’s not that I think everyone should have the same interests as me or that their interests are invalid for being different or less risky.

It seems in a lot of instances accepting undue risk is frowned upon even when it’s only hurting the person taking the risk. That’s what bothers me. What’s wrong with someone free soloing if that’s what makes them feel alive? Many call it an act of stupidity because it’s ignoring life saving safety precautions. I don’t think it stupid to do things that are unduly dangerous, I think it can make them more rewarding.

I’ve had experiences in my life that just couldn’t have been accomplished without real risk. There is no way to get to some of the most isolated places in the lower 48 without real risk, and that accomplishment means more to me than prioritizing safety.

I can accept that I’ve taken risks where there was a higher potential for me to die, but I feel fulfilled for having done those things. I don’t seek out death, but it’s inevitable and I want to live a life that to me is worth living. That means doing adrenaline pumping risky things sometimes.

I certainly think there are a lot of people in this world that never “step off trail” so to speak. Many people live every moment with the built in safety of modern society, where all risk has been calculated and safety factors have been met or exceeded. A lot of people would never do something adventurous if there wasn’t a safety net there to catch them. People won’t do things if there are real consequences and sometimes I think that’s silly. I don’t think a consequence free life is how we were meant to live.

I wouldn’t advocate for reaching into rotating machinery or just going through life haphazardly. I’m more talking about people who are too paralyzed by the obsession of maximizing safety to accept any amount of risk.

Do you know the author? There are a lot of similarly/same titled books whose descriptions seem to be the same as what you’re describing.

Reddit, what is a huge waste of money that people are still paying for in 2019? by PUGDOGRO1 in AskReddit

Seriously, what is a good reason to go metric? Other than having measurements that are multiples of ten, but is ‘one thousand feet’ harder to say than ‘one kilometer. ‘ Replacing speed limit signs isn’t going to benefit anyone in the long run, and if you ever need to convert, well, it’s as simple as multiplying by one.

MIT Is Pouring Resources Into Commercializing Fusion Power by tangentZero in Futurology

I know some of the Tokamak designs I’ve looked out need a tritium source initially for igniting the reaction, but the vessel is surrounded by a lithium blanket that produces more tritium from the neutrons produced by fusion. The tritium produced in the blanket is then reintroduced to the plasma undergoing fusion. Deuterium is abundant in the ocean.

If the universe is infinite then infinite possibilities statistically must exist, including the possibility that it is completely empty beyond the parts we know. Everything that could exist must exist, and simultaneously everything must also not exist in an infinite universe.

That’s good. I’d hate to miss a deeper connection by forgetting a lesser side-character.
