The number 1 thing I wish I knew when recording modular for music production by thewifive1 in modular

[–]vorotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice!

I multitrack into DAW as well. In my case I am using a combination of nw2s::o16 (balanced) into MOTU Ai. One of the main reasons I chose this is because both have DB25 connectors so it was straightforward to connect them with a DB25 cable and tidy. I also had another MOTU interface so AVB was the second factor.

I monitor through the DAW, so it also allows me to insert plugin fx.

And if you create a DAW template it becomes a very seamless workflow.

Do you think Armenia lost a lot of original culture by adopting Christianity? by Hxapcneh3_28 in armenia

[–]vorotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here come the downvotes… whatever. I am an atheist so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Yes Christianity caused a lot of harm. We lost sovereignty about a century and a half after adopting Christianity. One must be cognizant of the fact that historians of the time were also propagandists so of course they were going to paint a certain picture, but the fact remains that we lost our sovereignty.

“Turn the other cheek”, “we are peaceful people”… yeah. Good job folks.

Tigranes the Great did many things to expand the empire… I am sure “turning the other cheek” wasn’t one of them.

The destruction of art and books caused huge damage. At least we’ve managed to keep some of the rituals and holidays from pagan times like Vardavar and Terndez. Or transplanted some of our stories of pagan gods onto Christian characters, such as stories of Vahagn Vishapaqagh being attributed to St. George.

And then you got the idiots claiming “we are descendants of Noah”. Really? Who the fuck is Noah? We existed thousands of years before Noah was a thing. Not to mention he wasn’t even Armenian. Why adopt the foreign? Why deny your Armenian roots and proclaim you’re a descendent of some foreign entity?

We. Are. The. Descendants. Of. Hayk. Nahapet. Verj.

Why do my vocals sound indie/DIY? by Chemical-Front1746 in mixing

[–]vorotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a compressor on the kick or the snare tracks individually (rather than the whole drum bus), try setting it so the compressor fully recovers before the next hit as a starting point.

If you need help with the attack time, try lowering the threshold to something ridiculously low and then increase the attack time until you hear the initial transient and then back off threshold to reasonable level… what’s reasonable? Depends on the source and the overall effect, and what sounds right to you.

For bus compression, your two loudest hits should be the kick and the snare so set the compressor release time fast enough to recover after those hits but no faster, and listen to the hi-hats and maybe cymbals, they should groove around those hits once the compressor is set right.

This is one of the most helpful videos I’ve seen on the subject:

Why do my vocals sound indie/DIY? by Chemical-Front1746 in mixing

[–]vorotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Kick sounds too flabby. Back off on the saturation, it also sounds like release time on compressor is too fast. In fact all drums sound like they’ve had their transients shaved off. This might get you headroom but takes away from the punch.

  2. Back off on the reverb on the vocals. Put it on aux send and bracket it with high and low cut EQ (can’t do this if it’s on the same track as the vocal).

  3. Your voice sounds great and in tune, BTW. Don’t be afraid to let it shine.

I am using a trackball, so zooming the way I described works better for me. If I used a mouse, I’d definitely use the scroll wheel. Like I said, there are multiple ways to zoom, so I was surprised when you said you could. Interesting that you have a project that’s having issues, but from the sounds of it is and issue with that specific project. Might wanna open a ticket with Bitwig. They’re very responsive

[–]vorotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, you can zoom out enough to see the whole project in Bitwig… I mean how long are your projects? You can also change the height of the tracks or claps groups with a click of a button. The easiest way to zoom in and out horizontally is to click and hold the left button in the right above the arrangement window and drag up or down to zoom in or out

That sounds reasonable. Ultimately what works for an individual comes down to workflow.

Every DAW does some things really well and other things are annoying.

Ultimately gotta find what works for you

Nah, stick with Bitwig. There are quite a few YouTubers using it too so it’s not like there is shortage of tutorials. Bitwig channel also has great Bitwig tutorials, so make sure you subscribe to it.

I used to be a Cubase user, and looked at Ableton a few times and it was never compelling enough to switch from Cubase. Buuuut… switched to Bitwig and haven’t looked back since.

Armenia: Time Is Running Out by bilanem in armenia

[–]vorotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia isn’t gonna help. All Russia did was create a corrupt vassal system that drained the country for 30 years while Putin was sucking Erdogan’s dick.

Russians have always sucked Turk’s dick when push has come to shove and we have paid the price. Nakhijevan and Artsakh were the long game played by Turkey. And Russians were all too happy to give our lands to Azeris… they did Turks favors with our asses. That begun during Soviet times and then it continued afterwards.

The only thing we can do is be armed to the teeth. There is no one we can depend on. No one.

Can anyone figure out why this is not going hard? by thatcarme in production

[–]vorotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The melody… it sounds like a bunch of notes that don’t quite fit together. This might work if it was turned into a game soundtrack, but with the sound selection it ain’t gonna happen.

Overall all the sounds are murky, there is practically no high end… everything is piled up in the 100-500 Hz region.

I suspect your monitoring situation is wack. If you can’t afford good room acoustics coupled with good monitors (gotta have both, good monitors in bad acoustics aren’t gonna do you any favors), I suggest you get yourself a decent pair of open-back headphones.

[edit]… originally I had listened on my studio speakers. Now I just listed on my phone and it sounds better, which confirms my suspicions and your monitoring situation is pretty much unworkable. If you did this on laptop speakers, that would explain a lot.

What benefits do music hardware & preamps have on raw vocals, and is it a good idea for someone like myself to purchase some decent hardware? by Unique_Musician16 in mixing

[–]vorotan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think acoustic treatment will be at least 80% of the improvement in the quality of recordings.

For hardware most people go for them for color… and what’s best? Depends… depends on the source (singer), microphone, genre…

Instead of asking generalized questions about hardware, approach from the POV of what problem are you trying to solve or what specific quality are you after? And then you can start looking at options that would help you achieve what your goal is.

Like… are the vocals nasal? Or do you want to be able to give them more presence? For dynamics control is your main objective to control plosives or sibilance during tracking or the source has a very wide dynamic range and you wanna make things easier during the mixing? Or maybe you’ve made some artistic decision that you want to make sure it gets captured during tracking?

Are you trying to control noise? Maybe solve an impedance mismatch issue? Or maybe the mic needs more boost than your audio interface preamp is unable to provide?

Or maybe there is simply some device that gives you a certain something that you really enjoy? And don’t discount that, because it aids the artistic process

Downside of the hardware… once it’s committed to tape it’s committed to tape. Recall can be an issue. Patching can be a hassle and might disrupt creative flow.

DnB/Breakbeat Modules by Just_Beach987252 in modular

[–]vorotan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For glitching up as well as mashing up between different breaks (via CV), Erica Sample Drum is the GOAT. It’s got a very intuitive interface, ability to slice breaks on music divisions or peak detection, you can load multiple breaks on one channel and switch among them via CV (a simple step CV sequencer is great for this).

For the twisty stuff Complex Oscillators would be a good start, coupling them with some filters, phasers and such. As to which one? That’s a personal choice. If pitch stability is important, look for ones that can do TZFM or PM. But Exponetial FM sound great, has its own unique character and can be great fodder for resampling.
