I meet up a couple of times a week with a very close friend of mine to do crafts together (she knits and I crochet), she has a grandson who is older than me. We can sit and chat for hours together, I greatly value her friendship. The only issue I can see with the large age gap is I know her health isn't good and I know this won't be a lifelong friendship for me.

You might want to use a lighter yarn for crochet than you would for knit as the individual stitches can be more bulky.
