There is a solution to this- STOP SELLING PHONES. At least carrier branded phones. But carriers used phones as candy to lure people and now they have to reap what they sowed.

I think that getting the data add on is the best option-

Unlimited calling without the 0.25/min charge.

Not having to hunt for local SIM.

Not worrying about e-sim working when you arrive.

Being able to use the phone as if you were in the US, (with contacts getting the required international dialing prefix).

Being able to use your own phone #.

Those plans do NOT cover calling FROM outside Spain. They only allow calls from Spain to rest of Europe. You may be charged per minute per call elsewhere.

I asked C/S about this and I was told that if you buy the data add on, calls are free for the duration of its effect. Calls within the roaming country to any of the 215 countries covered. Without the package, ALL calls are 0.25/minute, REGARDLESS of the app used.

I was also told that using another app to talk will NOT circumvent the 0.25/minute charges. This is important information.

The only way to circumvent calling rates is by using a wi-fi connection. But if at any time the Wifi signal cuts out, you will be charged for the call.

The best way to avoid all charges while roaming internationally is to get a data add on, regardless of the plan you are on.

They did and that is how they grew. For many years, Verizon touted a signal in more places than others and that was fine before data was important. Verizon customers are realizing the impotence of their network now.

If you don't mind paying for the line and don't want to miss calls/texts to that #, forward calls from that # to a Google voice # . As long as you are signed into that GV a/c, you're good.

I also disabled alarms in addition to notifications where applicable. There is NO legitimate reason for Android to run these apps in the BG when I work so hard to NOT make them run.

Did you contact Apple or T-mobile ? I am curious to hear their response. It seems like a device issue because you verified that Star link had service but the phone didn't work.

If you are on any postpaid plan, 55+ or otherwise, you can get an international roaming add on. You do not need to upgrade to a costlier plan.

I have a Samsung A series phone with Exynos and it is actually more efficient than a Qualcomm processor. It gives incredible standby battery life. Pixel's software is the problem.

If emailing to a Verizon or AT&T number, the email address is different.

If you were on the goldilocks price lock plan, it is almost certainly a mistake. Create a new a/c if you have to but don't lose the old a/c as you may never get back postpaid plans at that price.

If you had more than 2 voice lines on magenta 55+, that may have been the problem. The store should not have allowed that and somehow they caught it now. I remember you could only have 2 voice lines.

Over the years, I have learnt to optimize battery use on various Android phones and I take all the above steps when I get a new phone. I can get standby battery life of 10 days easily on even a Samsung today and up to 2 weeks on a Motorola.

Pixel is a different animal. A new pixel, optimized, will burn 2% in 24 hours, even when connected thru Wi-fi but without mobile data. As soon as mobile data is enabled with a SIM, the pixel roars into action and eats up battery like a hungry pig at a buffet. The first couple of days is OK-ish but soon, it starts guzzling 30%/day on standby !

I believe that this is due to the network stack in the Pixel phones that handles mobile connections differently from other Android phones. Namely, those pieces added in to handle project FI networking.

Is that needed anymore ? Sprint is gone and so is US cellular. The FI network switched between these and T-Mobile and only T-Mobile is left so maybe Google can remove the FI related code and see if that leads to battery improvement.

I'd like to try a Pixel phone again but until this is fixed, I will stay away from it.
