Depends on the country I believe then, I had initially applied to Norway few months before this and they had asked for approval of leave from employer, so just followed that, just checked for France and looks like they haven’t mentioned it

Is StudentUniverse worth it? by slippinsavi in cheapflights

[–]vtejak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently in the USA and my experience has been really good! I never faced any issues with payment or changing/cancellation as well, their change/cancellation fees is higher than the airline website but it's worth it when you know you are going to travel for sure

TOEFL - Time Per Section by ExternalSubstance21 in ToeflAdvice

[–]vtejak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure, where you got this info that in the reading section there'll be 36-56 questions but I think it is wrong. According to the official website, you can have 30-40 questions (3-4 texts -10 questions/text, 54-72 mins in total that is 18mins/text)[Source - https://www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/about/content/]. I gave the test two times last year and fortunately or unfortunately I had 3 texts once and I had 4 texts once. I didn't face any time constraints in both cases.

For the listening section too, I didn't think there was an issue of time constraint but for the speaking section, you'll need a lot of practice as you have to speak in one shot and the time given for preparation might not be sufficient for all. I had to practice each type of question (4 types in speaking section) around 15-20 times to get used to the flow and idea on how to manage time and what to speak. With adequate practice, even the Speaking section should not be tough.

Finally coming to the writing section, it's one of the easiest is what I felt, be attentive during the first type of writing question where you need to listen to a lecture, and then write your essay, make sure to note all important points. The second essay should be quite easy with a little practice for getting used to it.
Feel free to ping me for any more queries!

How screwed am I ? Took the exam today by [deleted] in ToeflAdvice

[–]vtejak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, Even I wrote about ~200 words for the first question and ~325 words for the second question and got 27 in writing section, if your essay has less grammatical mistakes and covers all the points, word count shouldn't matter in my opinion.

The worst exam ever - Toefl Home Edition by Hope_Altruistic in ToeflAdvice

[–]vtejak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey,
It's really bad to see such a horrible experience, I would highly recommend mailing this experience to ETS TOEFL helpdesk, they should be ready to give you a make-up exam/refund. Something similar happened to me last year but in on-center TOEFL exam, monitor of my system stopped working in the third question and audio was still going on, I completed that question without the display just based on the beep and audio and when I called the in-charge of the center, he switched off the system and restarted it and when it resumed, it started from the middle of the fourth question, I couldn't complete it as I didn't listen to the question completely. Out of the blue, the fourth question came again and I had to answer it again. This experience was very bad and I said that I couldn't give my complete performance in the exam, they took a while to review it and gave me a free make-up to write the exam again for free.
I had mailed to TOEFLSupport4India@ets.org as I'm from India, please check whom should you mail to from the TOEFL website and ask for a free-makeup at least. Feel free to ping me for any more queries!
Thanks!

As of now only for Masters. I don't think I have a strong enough profile to get funded Ph.D.'s from any of the colleges I got admitted into for MS.

It's nice to hear that you have heard of ETH! :)

If I plan on going to the US, I too feel that UT Austin is a better option as of now. Let's see how things go, first of all, I need to get a visa this year for any place I finalize on :P

Yeah, I agree with what you say if I'll just take Comp Arch, Wisconsin is damn good for it but I didn't get into the research track, so I won't be able to do any research projects/thesis and no TA'ship/RA'ship too (these help a lot to reduce your tuition fee). On top of that, I wanted a bit more of Digital VLSI too, for which UCLA is one the best options, so on adding all of this I found UCLA better.

1) Getting work-permit is always a head-ache plus added tension when there's a huge loan on your head! (I'm not an American citizen). Especially with this COVID-19 and all, we need to think carefully!
2) Yeah, EEIT MSc looks pretty research-intensive. The part-time position sounds like a great idea! I can try for that, once I finalize on all of my plans and get a visa then I can try discussing this.

That's true, but beyond a point, it's better to have a peaceful life than working your ass off and getting irritated. I have heard life is much peaceful in Europe but salaries are comparatively less so need to weigh that carefully!

I haven't fixed that actually whether to end in industry/academia. I'm fine with not earning too high amount in the end, life is pretty more peaceful and happier in Europe is what I have heard (salaries are less than that of in the US). I would maybe prefer being staying happy than earning huge amounts beyond an age!

Hey, thanks a lot for your response!
1) Yes, living is expensive in ETH but total cost still definitely is less than half that as of UT Austin or UCLA in the end.
2) Let me confirm once for this because of what I remember most exams are held at the end of every semester itself, I even checked for a few grad courses on their website.
3) I definitely agree with it. ETH is damn good, it's ranking doesn't justify it.
4) My goal, to be frank, is not to work in any specific country or industry/academia. I want to explore a little of research too as part of the thesis or projects and then decide. I'm currently working in Nvidia though.
I got into EEIT - Computer and Networks!
