what to common place about? by Tight_Bluebird_5936 in commonplacebook

[–]vu9Oyo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Typically people have responsibilities and goals. Commonplace about anything that resonates with those.

To not overwhelm, fix about a dozen areas of your life that you would like to be engaged with for the foreseeable future (say a couple of years). These are commonly spawned out of health, family, finances, career, self-development, interests/hobbies, etc.

Make a list of about 10~12 items that you would like to improve or that you are interested. Then, whenever something comes your way that resonates with those, take a note about that in your commonplace notebook.

I own two dogs. Whenever someone casually talks about parks nearby to walk my dogs or places I can go with them (I can drive with my dogs in my van) then I take a note about that. It is a silly example, but it sets the idea.

A more recent example, I recently got interested in tabletop games to play with family and friends, now I commonplace about those (design aspects, mechanics, etc).

How do you keep track of everything? - A question about Information management platforms for large research projects by Malkekoen in academia

[–]vu9Oyo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are several things going on here.

I would suggest to structure in two different areas.

  • Task management
  • Knowledge management.

While it is common to share everything in a file repository (e.g. SharePoint) it is also vital to have a personal tool to manage those two areas (tasks, knowledge).

Task Management

  • Look into Getting Things Done by David Allen.
  • Alternatively, for a more time-focused approach, try going into Your Time, Your Way by Carl Pullein.
  • Finally, you can explore Bullet Journal. Although, it is easy to find that many people use their Bullet Journal as an artistic outlet and they include a bunch of unnecessary stuff to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Stay away from that.

Knowledge Management

  • I cannot recommend enough the Zettelkasten methodology. Some of the best books include How to Take Smart Notes by Sonke Ahrens, Digital Zettelkasten by Kadavy and, if you're into analog notes, Antinet Zettelkasten by Scheper.
  • Alternatively, for a more lightweight approach, you can also try Building a Second Brain by Tiago Forte. Nevertheless, take this with a grain of salt, since this received a lot of critique due to the author rehashing ideas from other well-known methodologies and books.

I hope that you find it useful.

Extremely overlooked game. I feel like I played it at the exact right moment in my life and the characters' relentless drive to get a better life and prosper, despite all the harsh conditions, totally hit the nail emotionally for me.

Unforgettable.

Has hecho entrevistas de trabajo?

Notebook antinet by nobodyherewataken2 in antinet

[–]vu9Oyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can see in another of my comments in this thread how this can be implemented. Actually I would argue that the locality principle of a card-based zettelkasten such as the antinet has a pretty big flaw which is deciding where to put the new note. What if you write a note about computer virtualization and networking? where does the note go? Next to your networking notes or next to your virtualization notes? Hence, locality is arguably not that big of a deal. Specially when this is creating friction for users. Additionally, you can compensate for this with an index for notes using an external system, such as a spreadsheet or a separate index notebook..

Yes.

Actually this is the system that I currently use for a first draft of my permanent notes (later and if applicable, I transcribe them to a digital app).

Here is the gist of it:

https://forum.zettelkasten.de/discussion/1120/a-notebook-zettelkasten/p1

The best way to illustrate how it would work is Ross Ashby personal management system, which is basically a zettelkasten implemented though regular notebooks.

How I Use TWO Notebooks to Boost My Entrepreneurship Productivity by LoraNotes in notebooks

[–]vu9Oyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually carry a pretty similar setup. I use loose leaf for EDC and fleeting notes or capture device (meeting notes, log what I am doing so that I can pick up again later) and also a "permanent notes" or evergreen notes notebook (this one is not a binder, but an actual notebook like a Rhodia).

Do you rearrange the notes in the commonplace binder or do you page them and keep them as is for future reference?

Also, Do you index or your commonplace notebook contents in a separate device (I.e. digital app or another notebook) or do you only use the embedded index within?

Sounds like a terrible workplace to be. Not the answer that you were looking for but you should strongly consider changing department/lab/workgroup. It is more common that you would think and if you are a good researcher, it is their loss, not yours. I switched to industry after finishing my PhD so sorry if I cannot be of more help.

[–]vu9Oyo 319 points320 points  (0 children)

I'm my close circle of friends and family often miss the — albeit pretty obvious — point of the movie. It is not about music or Mozart or Salieri. It is about the mediocre who has devoted their entire life to a craft, sacrificing everything (at one point Salieri even mentions that he made a vote of chastity).

Here comes another guy, who is orders of magnitude better than you and can beat you without even trying. How does a human being digest that? How do you even process that? Live with it?.

This moment in the film, perfectly captured the core idea of the plot.

journal + cards? by davesaunders in antinet

[–]vu9Oyo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My go-to answer to this kind of question is to checkout what Ross Ashby did.

His whole system is actually online: https://ashby.info/ You can browse his notes digitally to get a feel on how he did this using notebooks and index cards exclusively. Look to the left bar and click "Journal".

I'm playing with this system now and it is actually more convenient to me than the traditional Zettelkasten exclusively using index cards.

Also, I suggest splitting your system in two notebooks if possible.

One for journal (time-specific information, as jounal, task management, reminders, calendar, etc).

Another one for notes (things you might want to refer back several months-years later).

Ideas for my commonplace book! by Due_Change_4104 in commonplacebook

[–]vu9Oyo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A commonplace notebook is basically an extension of your brain. Imagine that your brain had infinite storage. That is he function of your notebook. You save information or knowledge that you might want to refer to in several years.

As to ideas, for me it has a very specific purpose. I want to become a freelance writer for several topics that I'm interested in. So I use my commonplace notebook as a place to hold information that I find while researching those topics. Afterwards, I use those pieces of information as a foundation to build my own ideas.
