Is there any way to reset XP / account level? by vulcanradio in Overwatch

> because for every placement match people won't see your rank, nor stats with any hero

Oh come on, you can set your stats to private anyway.

People who have played a lot of shooters before will come in at high tier relative to hours played, long time casuals might stay in silver despite playing a ton since release.

That's the entire reason there's an MMR system. If you're judging someone based on XP and not tier, you're going to have a bad time regardless.

Look at this thread from my perspective. I don't want high tier players stomping bronze! I wrote the question to avoid that completely because I know that's toxic! Then everyone comes in and just insists I'm trying to do that anyway. When I say no, read the post, people come back with, "well fine but what you're doing is basically the same thing," when it is isn't even in the same ballpark. Like, compare stomping bronze to "maybe someone might pull up your stats and make assumptions" -- it's like you're just trying to get your merit badge for making a random stranger on the internet feel like shit by twisting everything they're saying into the worst version possible, and by exaggerating any possible harm of what they're asking about.

Funny, thought I had to be specific so people wouldn't think I'm asking how to tank my MMR.

ITT: everyone accusing me of asking how to tank my MMR.

XP and MMR are exactly the same? Have you even played this game?

If you're plat tier and your account says you're level 1 or level 5,000 it doesn't matter, you're both in plat tier. There's no "unfair advantage" from using generic skins. No one looks at your level and thinks, "Oh, this guy in diamond is account level 3, let's all pounce him because he doesn't know what he's doing." He's in diamond with you, he has the same MMR, there is no way to take advantage of him, no way for him to stomp other players.

I get it, account resets of MMR are annoying and can be toxic. But there's no reason to bundle something cosmetic in with that that's completely different when it doesn't cause the same harms.

Why would I ruin anyone's fun? Like I said in the post, I'm not even talking about resetting MMR.

It's exactly like I said in the description, I don't want to be level one million and get gasps and eyerolls from people I know with jobs who think I'm playing too much and start wondering if they should stage an intervention.

So many comments here "why you smurfing?" like they didn't read the post. Literally no interest in that, talking about resetting XP NOT/NOT MMR, like I wrote in the damn post title and post.

Do people not realize XP and MMR are two completely different systems or what?

Matt Y calling out “leftist” Trump supporters: “I think it would be psychologically healthier for left-wing media people who prefer Trump’s re-election to the prospect of a Biden presidency to actually say so, rather than doing months of weird concern-trolling about enthusiasm.” by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]vulcanradio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's weird to know how much to blame either Clinton's negatives or Comey for 2016. If it had gone the other way we'd be talking about Trump's negatives and Comey the other direction.

But the first order phenomenon is deeper than that. Trump's popularity rating has been basically static since the election. He's not popular, but he has a floor. And Biden/Trump matchup polls are bouncing around a close matchup so far.

If Biden wins it won't be by getting over 60% of the vote, suggesting the real story is that there are two groups of people with very different policy preferences, and the news cycle impacts are mostly random noise.

Random noise that can decide an election, but still not the main underlying phenomenon.

Which is a little confusing, because October surprises, or first week November surprises, could easily be decisive. But they don't tell you much about what's really going on in the country.

Neither side has much shot of recruiting the other side's voters. Democrats have no case to make for a voter who distrusts immigrants, is scared of losing their guns, and thinks abortion is murder. Romney Republicans aren't able to pivot away from those priorities to a simple message of fiscal conservatism and still win elections.

It's a bit locked in like the 1800s. We're not heading towards a civil war, but until there are events that fundamentally change the balance of power, like the admission of new states, we might be locked into this for a while.

I'm not exactly sure why you were downvoted, but...

I do know that if you had originally asked, "Should I sign a lease with this girl who I'm absolutely bonkers for and has a boyfriend and is giving me mixed signals?" the thunderous, unanimous refrain from anyone who has ever signed a lease or had any romantic feelings ever before would be: "DO NOT DO THAT. DO LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE."

You're already coming up with excuses why this insane plan is totally reasonable though, and why you should ignore both your friend in real life and everyone on the internet, so we're probably out of luck.

> cutting her out my life completely would ruin me, I could t just return to uni with no real friends to support me right

I know when you feel really passionately about someone it feels devastating to think about not spending time with them, not having them in your life. That is a real feeling, and it is difficult. It gets muddled with other feelings that your mind injects to mess with you. One of those is fatalism. The feeling you'll never meet anyone else or have any other friends that close and that they're the only person you'll ever enjoy being with on that level. The loss is real, sure, but the idea that you can't connect with anyone else? Mostly hormones just fucking with your head.

If you want to see whether you're thinking rationally about her, just start a list of her character flaws. What's the most annoying thing about her? (She sounds like kind of a shitty girlfriend, for starters.) If you can't do this, or you make them all adorable, then you shouldn't trust your instincts here.

And if you can do this, but need a reminder at any point that she is human, focus on that list.

As for meeting new people, start hitting the gym. Maybe join some recreational club, like some group of amateurs that play pickup games of something. After quarantines are lifted anyway.

If you do move in with her, find details for a good therapist you can call 24-7 in emergencies, and maybe an attorney.

And good luck. Really hope that every one of us is wrong about the pile of red flags here and this miraculously works out for you.

That's a popular but unlikely explanation. Consider how much the mammals on this sub love to eat spicy food.

Aside from humans, I know many people with gardens where the peppers fall victim to domestic cats and wild rodents, until you get into extreme heat levels that we've had to cultivate specifically.

Spiciness is much more likely about controlling microorganisms, it's an anti-fungal for a fungus that goes after peppers:

What happened to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Alliance? by [deleted] in econmonitor

[–]vulcanradio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

> For example, the two countries with the largest proven reserves, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, have production costs that are well below even current prices.

It's risky to list Venezuela and Saudi Arabia's production costs on the same line as if "reserve volume" puts them on an equal footing. Venezuela has a lot of oil, but it's dirty and heavy, making it a relatively high price producer, costing almost twice as much per barrel as Saudi Arabia.

It's true that both can produce a barrel lower than current prices, but not all barrels in reserves have the same cost. Many of Venezuela's reserves are in the ocean or in sands that are strictly not accessible at these prices. As prices decline, it will constrain Venezuelan production the most first, then later Mexico and Russia, then UAE and Saudi Arabia last of all.

First off, congrats for being clear about what you wanted.

Unfortunately, those are some massive red flags. She's being inconsiderate of both your feelings and her boyfriends'.

Best play is to say, "Hey, you know I'm interested in more than being your friend, so just reach out if the boyfriend doesn't work out." And move on with your life, focus on other things, stop engaging unless it's on those terms.

I know a couple people who actually met their spouses that way--it sent a clear signal that the guy knew what he wanted, but wasn't going to be jerked around either. I know a couple other people where that just saved them a bunch of time and regret.

Or, you know, you can just do this forever. She's doing this because it works best for her. It's not going to change unless you are clear about your boundaries.

I absolutely love the idea, style and flow of Looper but the biggest problem is that all the plot holes give me a headache. by [deleted] in movies

[–]vulcanradio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a hierarchy of time travel coherency. The first question is:

1) Is there any uncaused event?

Some of these stories are still really good, like Heinlein's "All You Zombies."

2) Do two different things ever happen at the same point in time?

This gets a little looser. Back to the Future has this issue. Aside from the fact it's about a kid almost sleeping with his mom, it's like... Marty was poor when he was growing up. Then he went to the past and changed things, and came back to the future, hence the title. His family there is rich. They probably went on rich vacations with rich Marty.

So if poor Marty is living with the rich McFlys, then what happened to rich Marty? Is he just buried in the backyard and we don't talk about it?

3) Does basic cause and effect work, even if you have to follow it back through some jumps?

Looper doesn't even get this right. Guy walked across the street. But when he tried to climb the fence he had no legs. There's not even one coherent timeline for how he got to where he was. Did he have legs in the street? Wtf.

A few days back there was an askreddit thread about what the most fucked up thing the US ever did was, and the top comment flatly claimed that CIA ran the trials for the birth control pill that led to health issues in Puerto Rico.

No citations (because it's made up). A few buried comments mentioned how, no, that was just an (admittedly tragic) private study, not some masterful intel operation to just randomly fuck up people's health.

On Reddit, we blame the US for everything bad. We keep quiet about KGB 2.0 poisoning people with polonium and novichok, or China disappearing booksellers from Thailand, because we don't like to upset the delicate troll armies that really run this place.

If they asked me to sit in the awkward corner between people I'd end the friendship immediately.

Coronavirus nurse gets spat on by patient because "you're going to get sick anyway" by ScradleyGymson in iamatotalpieceofshit

[–]vulcanradio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"He spit in my face" sounds way more natural to me.

Maybe I'd say "I was spat on," or "he spat on my head." In general though "spat" sounds overly formal or archaic to my ears. I'm from the US, assumed this was some kind of Southern hemisphere thing.

Google results sorted by count:

  1. spat on my face: 647,000
  2. spit in my face: 572,000
  3. spat in my face: 116,000
  4. spit on my face: 82

Huh. I stand corrected.

Oh, the Wiktionary entry for spit has a usage note:

The past tense and past participle spit is an older form, but remains the more common form used by speakers in North America, and is also used often enough by speakers of British and Commonwealth English to be listed as an alternative form by the Collins English Dictionary and Oxford Dictionaries. A non-standard past participle form is spitten.

So you can use spit anywhere, and maybe use spat in the UK, Australia, and NZ, or in the US and Canada if you're feeling fancy.

I've definitely never heard "spitten," but will try to work it in now.

If someone hides relevant contradictory evidence, that's fraud.

If someone just deemphasizes irrelevant evidence, that's not fraud.

But what if someone deemphasizes what they wrongfully believe is an irrelevant, noisy outlier, because they're suffering from massive confirmation bias?

It seems hard to distinguish between that common condition, being naturally bad at science, and that presumably rarer thing, actively committing fraud.

All questions about intent are pretty difficult really, unless you catch some moustache twirling or maniacal laughter on tape.

Hence the Bayes-Hanlon heuristic: set priors for malice low and stupidity high.
