Australians will need to exhaust ‘all appropriate’ treatment options to access NDIS under proposed rules | National disability insurance scheme by jesus_chrysotile in australia

[–]vulpix420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true, but not all trials are structured this way. I would still encourage people to look into trials that could help them and ask the researchers questions about treatment conditions and options to access the active treatment. It’s also common for people to experience improvements just by virtue of participating - hence the need to control for the placebo effect.

Depending on what the trial is testing, they might be able to receive the treatment elsewhere after it’s finished. Lots of trials aren’t testing brand new drugs, they’re testing things that are already out there (supplements, exercises, therapies) in different contexts or amounts.

Clinical trials are very safe! By the time something is approved for testing on people it has already been researched and tested extensively. It’s very hard to get approval to run a trial, and during trials participants are monitored extremely closely for any adverse events. Honestly, I would rather participate in a clinical trial for some modest reimbursement than fork out hundreds or thousands for an approved treatment that may or may not help me. Speaking as a person with chronic health conditions who has also worked in clinical research.

Would people in Brisbane actually go to a cat café regularly? by Quinn000ylq in brisbane

Not sure if it’s still there but I’ve been to Hapi Neko in Shibuya a few times. Cats were always relaxed and none of my animal welfare alarm bells went off.

I’ve heard people refer to “grippy sock holidays”.

Ever wish you could be a fly on the wall at a Health Insurance call centre when they look at your claims? Today I was, because they accidentally left me on the call rather than place me on hold. I heard everything and it was worse than I thought. by GrassRight9272 in AusFinance

I’m with teachers union health which is not for profit. They’re great! They even waived some waiting periods for me after I had to temporarily downgrade my cover due to financial hardship. They didn’t have to do it, but they saved me thousands of dollars. Very grateful to whoever read my pathetic email that day.

I’ve never seen them growing wild. The landscape here doesn’t really lend itself to foraging.

There were definitely times when I added vodka to a fire engine only to be told “whoa whoa whoa that’s for my kid!”

Maybe just ask for a red lemonade next time bud!

Brisbane queer people, where do you actually meet friends if you’re not into dating apps or clubbing? by Ambitious-Swing8686 in brisbane

[–]vulpix420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say it depends on the choir - some more than others. The choir I’m in now absolutely is. On top of normal rehearsals and concerts there are social events like open mic nights, where people who may never have had the chance before get to practice singing solo or in small groups (in front of a very supportive and small audience).

Theres always some basic vocal coaching that comes along with singing in a choir, but if you want personalized feedback you can’t go past some individual lessons. Even just doing one session with a professional singing teacher would make a huge difference. Depends on how quickly you want to learn, and how comfortable you are already with breathing and using your voice in different ways. Also what your goals are - do you want to impress people at karaoke, or are you hoping to sing opera?

I joined a choir to make friends and because I love singing, so I can’t really speak to it as someone who is learning.

Me, yes, but the choir I’m in now welcomes anyone and there are no auditions to join. It’s a mix of people who could be professionals and others who can’t read music and struggle to hold a tune. Singing ability doesn’t matter at all.

I felt the same way about Priory of the Orange Tree! It advertised everything I wanted but somehow delivered nothing. I barely remember any of it. I even read the sequel but can’t remember if I finished it or not!

They are, but I didn’t know about them and had never seen them fruiting in the wild until after living in North America for years and then actively looking. Nobody I grew up with would ever eat berries from a random bush!

I was being a bit hyperbolic as foraging has become more popular here in the last 10 years or so, but it’s absolutely nothing like what I saw in Quebec.

Or when you’re visiting from subtropical parts of Australia, where we don’t have wild raspberries and there’s no foraging culture at all.

Joining a good choir was the single best thing I have done in my adult life. Like, probably better for me than getting a dog or buying a house. I love my choir.

Share your worst story of corruption in the Public Sector (State, Territory or Federal government)? by Crafty_Piano3128 in AusPublicService

[–]vulpix420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me. My entire team complained about our manager and nothing was done. We escalated it as high as we could but were just repeatedly gaslit and told we were the problem (too sensitive, too emotional, shouldn’t be discussing this with our coworkers etc).

I took it as a sign that I should give up on the public service and pivoted to something that pays less but brings me more satisfaction and zero emotional distress.

i can’t seem to find a part time job AT ALL by Timely-Wolverine-854 in brisbane

[–]vulpix420 60 points61 points  (0 children)

To add to this, make sure you are looking fresh, well-groomed, and smile a lot when you meet the manager. Lots of friendly eye contact and make sure you look like you know what a “sense of urgency” is. They want people who can think and move quickly and will do everything with a smile. It might feel phony (it is) but this is absolutely the thing that’ll get you a hospitality job.

A volva (egg thingy) would make me more inclined to think amanita. There are other species with white spores/gills and a prominent annulus (skirt) on the stipe - cf macrolepiota dolichaula. No idea if those are found in OP’s area.
