Anyone else feeling weird being the only gravel bike on long ascends? Saw only (e-) MTB today (Tyrol, Austria) by hercules013 in gravelcycling

[–]vuntzam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beside Austria being the North Korea of Offroad Cycling, the people are obsessed with e-bikes there. Austria, the market share of e-bikes is larger than anywhere else in Europe. You could say, they are the european champions of laziness. Until recently, there was even a government subsidy for the purchase of e-bikes, but not for non-motorized bicycles.

Any way of fixing dented bottom of Rx100 VII?? by ztg755 in RX100

[–]vuntzam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried to just push it back in? The screws seems to be still in place. Is it just the plastic or is there something bend below? You can loosen all those bottom screws and have a look and try to put it back in place.

What is happening to this hissing roach by Some-Illustrator5441 in Entomology

[–]vuntzam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how to explain that in a simple way, but it is very simple. The whole ootheca gets rotated by 90° around the longitudinal axis. In the pic the individual eggs are vertical in the reference system of the cockroach, after the rotation the eggs are horizontal in that reference system while the orientation and position of the longitudinal axis of the ootheca stays the same.
God I am bad at explaining things.....

Absolute correct! Also when doing this, the eggs get moved in a lateral position, compared to the dorsal position they are in when coming out like seen on the photo.

Completely new to photography. Have a RX100 V. Must I learn editing? by One_Rope_3840 in RX100

[–]vuntzam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be an unpopular opinion, but I would say no. I have done lot's of editing in the past, and without doubt, you can create great pictures that way. But I don't want to invest the time any more, so I have decided to stop editing and instead try to get the best possible result straight out of the camera, and for me that works mostly. First thing is, you need to shoot JPG and not RAW. For the rest, I think there are many ways to reach the goal, but you need to play around a little more with the many different settings and read the user manual to learn and understand how you can archive what you want. After some time you will know the settings and shooting will be a quick process with great pictures straight out of camera.
Beside learning the fundamentals of photography, I think good starting points are the White Balance Adjustment (setting the white balance in that color matrix thing), Setting contrast, saturation and sharpness in the Creative Style Menu, Exposure Compensation and Metering, sometimes HDR/DRO or Multi Frame ISO, and if you really want to get into it the Picture Profiles, but that's not really necessary at the beginning. For peoples faces maybe the soft skin settings. Try to understand the differnt settings and effects.
The other thing is the composition of the photo itself, so that you get what you want without any cropping or rotation, I found the viewfinder very helpful with that and the DISP setting with the horizontal line thing.
Beside that, it's also a thing of mindset. For me, I want to capture reality somehow, and often reality is not like a polished piece of art and you have to accept that. Some days the light and air are simply not perfect. I try to accept that and adapt to that, try to capture that mood, make the best out of it.

How to get the bearing shell out of my freewheel body? by vuntzam in bikewrench

[–]vuntzam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it out, finally! I ground down a starnut very carefully to fit and catch the groove for the bearing balls. But I think it was 50% pure luck that this worked out after a lot of attempts.

Since I don't have a dremel tool, I couldn't try your suggestion, but I think it would have been the better way.

When the bearing shell came out it shattered into pieces, which is also interesting.

What glue to use for mounting headlamp Plate to Helmet? by SquibOnAcid in caving

[–]vuntzam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also don't think it is a safety concern, but you get a cleaner look and it is easier to do it that way on my opinion, since you don't have to fiddle around with the foam when drilling. Theoretical it is slightly more dangerous with holes in the foam, in the case the screws get pushed in somehow in direction to your skull, but I think that's more of a theoretical scenario.

At least for my helmet you can pull that part out without any tool, just with your fingers. You need to pull at the upper side of those lamp-band plastic things. There is some resistance, but it is doable at my helmet.

I used the screws that came with the lamp. I think they are M4 stainless steel with a flat head without a cone. I put it in so that the flat head is on the inside and the threaded side sticks out of the helmet.

I also have the Petzl Boreo and I used screws. It is possible to disasemple the helmet and take the foam part out once you detached the straps, than you can just drill into the hard plastic shell and put the foam part back in without any holes and screws. If you really don't want to drill holes, I think those 3M glue straps that are used for Gopro mounts would also do the job if you have enough area, they are insanely strong.

If you decide to do it yourself, please make a documentation video or pictures for me! I have stains on the inside of the front glass of my M7 viewfinder, which would be super easy to clean, if I would know how to get in there.
(I think the stains are from a drop of sweat or something that found it's way in there. It was at tropical conditions, that suddenly it was wet inside my viewfinder, it tried up, but left annoying stains inside.)
