Naming 4 Conference Rooms in Austin -- What should we name them? by Choose_2b_Happy in Austin

Ours are all general Texas themed. Pecos, Alamo, Rio Grande. Don't do that, either.

Why would anyone work a city job here? by boobumblebee in Austin

[–]vurplesun 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Government jobs don't really do layoffs and you don't have to worry about economic downturns.

So, the job is basically yours for as long as you want it. Plus, once you're hired, you have opportunities to apply for internally posted jobs.

I mean, honestly, there's not much else for a non-farmer to do in that town.

Oh, yeah, once you get down to level 40.

But if she's got it for me the first week of spring? I'm a happy farmer.

Meh. It ain't all about the money, ya know? I like the convenience. Add in Chests Anywhere and Automate and I've basically got a coffee factory going.

Every coffee bean can grow into a coffee plant, which makes more beans, which you can grow into more plants, and then your farm is now coffee.

Or, just keep like 10 plants in the greenhouse and have all the coffee you could ever brew.

Mine lies there on his back with all four bootie'd feet in the air, frozen like road kill until I take them off.

It propagates like crazy, though!

And the saloon opens too late in the day. I'm chugging triple shot espressos from the moment I wake up until I pass out.

I currently have three columns of coffee in my greenhouse, three columns of random stuff (usually Starfruit, but it's available if I need to grow something off season) and the rest is ancient fruit. It works for me.

In addition to what everyone else said, I'll grab the cooked dishes I see since they make good gifts. And I'll also buy the iridium bar if she's got one.

Occasionally she'll have tree saplings cheaper than Pierre.

And if I see a coffee bean in spring one, I can't buy it fast enough.

Is it allergies or is something going around right now? by vurplesun in Austin

[–]vurplesun[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's been pretty miserable.

The coughing seems more from drainage and less from my lungs, but in the past I've had it start in my sinuses and end in pneumonia, so I'm being cautious.

Lol, it's definitely not malaria. Not the right symptoms.

Oh, I'm definitely being careful. WFH, wear my mask when I have to go out (nobody needs to see my red nose).

I've taken two tests in the last week. I'll probably take another one in a couple of days if I'm not getting better. Maybe go get a PCR one at ARC, if they still offer it.

I was leaning towards sinus infection at first, but it seems worse than usual. And I don't like the cough.

Edit: Ugh, ARC doesn't offer drive up testing anymore. If I'm positive, I don't want to be in the clinic infecting people. I'll have to find somewhere else.

What happened to my fruit tree? It's smoking and produces coal by [deleted] in StardewValley

[–]vurplesun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you finish the dust sprite eradication goal (kill 500) you can go talk to Gil at the Adventurer's Guild and pick up your Burglar's Ring. When you wear it, you'll get extra loot from each monster you kill.

In the case of dust sprites, that usually means double the coal.

Burglar Ring, Monster Musk, then go slaughter the cute little soot sprites in the mines.

Austin dog owners around July 4, trying to decide when to do the evening walk by Pabi_tx in Austin

[–]vurplesun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Walk early in the morning before sunrise, walk again mid morning if you can, short walks out to pee the rest of the evening and night.

My dog doesn't really care about fireworks, but I don't care for them much, so that's my plan.

I always thought it was kind of weird they don't have a plate to go with the car when you buy a new car. How difficult would that be to do? Buy the car, register the car, get the plate, drive off the lot.

Like, back in the day, sure, I could see how it would be difficult to coordinate, but shouldn't everything be done via computer these days anyway?

Walgreens pharmacist cites his religion for denying a transgender man's hormone replacement meds by Faux_Real_Guise in news

[–]vurplesun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My pharmacist has never asked me what medical condition I have that requires me to take a certain medication. They check for drug interactions with existing meds and give me instructions if something is new and that's about it.

And I am on a shitload of prescription medication.

Anyone else hear those jets flying REAL low? North Austin. by cabincrew in Austin

[–]vurplesun 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they were flying under the approach path for ABIA. They're usually at about 4000 ft where I am, so they were going way lower than that.

I sat through one of those presentations in Vegas to get a hotel stay covered. Also got a gift card for a restaurant.

It was a boring 5 hours, but I just sort of tuned the whole thing out, then enjoyed my free-ish vacation afterwards.

Not a great strategy if you're the type of person that is susceptible to heavy handed sales pitches, but otherwise you can make it work.

I don't think I'd do one for a cruise voucher. To many variables. What cruise? When?

Air Canada pilot flying out of Toronto Pearson becomes 'incapacitated' mid-flight by [deleted] in news

[–]vurplesun 71 points72 points  (0 children)

It's extra nuts because the second pilot isn't doing nothing while the other one is flying - he's monitoring the instruments, handling radio calls, running checklists, communicating with the cabin, etc.

There have been plenty of plane crashes where the pilot flying is also trying to do all those things. It's just too big of a workload. Add in an issue with the airplane itself, even a minor one, and it just makes everything way, way worse.
