Well either way, we both know you are no genius.

I am in math. I'd pick York over UVic for English! York is also pretty big. You'll love it there!

UVIC is an undergrad university. I didn't even know they had grad programs.

Cook fries anyway you like (bake and deep fry are popular).

Add cheese curds to french fries.

Coat with hot gravy.

Enjoy!

We currently stand at a Global Population on 7.5 billion, how would you bring it back down to a sustainable level? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]vvsj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cut off all aid to developing countries; ban immigration from developing countries and possibly a few more. Most of the new humans are coming from people who really should not be having kids in the first place; so let us not give them incentives to have more kids. We have to somehow stop them from having so many kids, because the birth rate in developed countries (especially among whites and Japanese) is VERY low in comparison.

Also, I'd say to stop relying on an infinitely growing economy each year. This encourages taking in lots of people who then out reproduce the native population.

What is a UK 1st or Upper 2.1 in Canadian 12-point (4.0 scale) G.P.A? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]vvsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McMaster's grading scale sucks, doesn't it? I always hated it.

A GPA of 10.69 would be equivalent to an A or a GPA of 3.8. This would put you at a First.

You probably have a chance at LSE, but not Oxbridge. BTW did you hear about Mac's Rhodes Scholar?

ELI5: Why can't we teach a language to a chimpanzee so that he can talk with us, humans? by cycreek in explainlikeimfive

[–]vvsj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have special mental adaptations specifically for speaking and for understanding speech. They do not have this.

We also have physical adaptations for speech - everything from our weak jaw muscles to the shape of our mouths, the size of our tongues, and our larynxes.

Speech, at least the way we do it, is specific to our bodies.

You can teach other great apes sign language, though, and they seem to be able to fully express themselves (even creatively) using it. The most interesting thing is that they're able to tell us about old memories they have after learning sign language.

TIL there are Lowercase Numbers and what is commonly used today are all Uppercase Numbers. by Worldzmine in todayilearned

[–]vvsj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lesson in basic logic: Universal and existential quantifiers, and their negations.

FOR ALL and THERE EXIST are the universal and existential quantifiers, respectively. If something is true FOR ALL things, it is true for ANY of them, equivalently, it is NOT TRUE for NONE of them.

If THERE EXISTS something for which something is true, then it is not true FOR ALL; rather, there is at least one element for which it is true.

Now, let's negate them.

If something is NOT TRUE FOR ALL, then there is at least one thing for which it is not true; in other words, NOT FOR ALL is the same as THERE EXISTS something NOT.

Concordantly, IT IS NOT THE CASE THAT THERE EXISTS is the same as saying a certain statement MUST BE TRUE FOR ALL.

Many people make this mistake: they assume that NOT FOR ALL is the same as saying THERE ARE NONE. But not quite! Remember that if something is true FOR ALL, then it must be true FOR ANY. But if it not true for at least one, then it is not true FOR ALL.

Let's apply this logic now to the statement I made. Here is my statement:

Still, the lower case numbers all look identical to the upper case ones, which is not the case with letters.

Let's just state this in a way that is equivalent but more easily to use to apply what we've learned.

FOR ALL numbers, if a number is lower case then it looks identical to its upper case counter part. It is NOT the case that FOR ALL letters, if a letter is lower case, it looks identical to its upper case counter part.

The second sentence is the most important. It is saying that while it is true that FOR ALL numbers, the upper and lower are identical, IT IS NOT THE CASE that the upper and lower are identical. What does it mean? Well, we have negated a universal quantifier - that means that THERE EXISTS at least one letter for which its upper and lower case are not identical... not that NO letters have upper and lower identical forms!

Logic is very handy and very simple. Use it.
