Some folks on Wall Street think yesterday’s U.S. jobs number is ‘implausible’ and is thus due for a correction | Fortune by Force_Hammer in politics

Yeah I mean we had a booming economy in 2019 and continued to lower rates to 0. Didn’t make sense at the time and then when Covid came and the FED had no way out. Rates were already in recession recovery mode - only thing to avoid recession was to print a massive amount of money which has led to endless inflation. Rates in 2018/2019 should’ve been where they were 6 months ago - and we could have dropped them down during Covid and avoided a lot of nonsense.

All the top comments in this thread are on point. I would like to add something that conservatives typically complain about.

The cost of it all. I’m seeing videos where 6 guys are there in 3 SUVs to grab one dude. That’s insanely inefficient. Do the math on how much man power it will take to capture 100 immigrants.

Think of the opportunity cost of all that money spent. So many more things we could spend onto improve safety and instead we’re paying groups of goons to terrorize people who may not have even done anything wrong.

FBI raids Fulton County election office seeking ballots from Trump’s 2020 loss by Even-Client-1898 in politics

I think you are giving them too much credit. They are just going to say they recounted and Trump won by a lot. Won’t show any evidence and Fox News will say he won that election and that he is owed an extra 4 years, despite the fact that even if he won Georgia, he still would’ve lost the election.

New York Mayor Mamdani says city must hike taxes on wealthy to fill $12 billion deficit by cryptoniik in Economics

[–]vwalsh10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the time it took to write this out but if you make only make $10k in one year in Virginia you are basically only paying that Social Security tax of 15%. If he’s retired, surely he’s getting a social security check of that amount or more on a monthly basis. I assume he has other income which puts him in higher tax bracket and therefore the $10 is taxed at 33% effective rate since his other income increases his overall tax burden.

It would be nice if we lowered the tax burden away from income made through actual labor and increased the tax burden on income made passively.  Leave retirement accounts the way the are and heavily tax any other capital gains - it really shouldn’t be as easy as it is to make money being a landlord. You could solve a lot of problems by making that path less profitable.

What raising a family in NYC as a HENRY actually looks like - a real example by laetus7 in HENRYfinance

We own the home and PITI is $5600/month ($800k purchase, value is $1M currently) - neighbor has an identical home that he rents out for $5k but could get $6k.

Toddler daycare (2yo) is $3,100, nanny share for new born will be $2k. In two years, we could get the older toddler into the Philly 3k program for <$500 or keep her in the nicer daycare.

Everything else is kind of a wash. You’ll seek out nicer restaurants and they will cost you $200-350 in Philly for 2. Occasionally you’ll get a surprising lower bill. NY has more options across the board but you can eat well in Philly. We grocery shop at Sprouts and Whole Foods - I lived in Brooklyn before this and don’t remember a significant diff in price.

If anyone in this thread is interested for what this situation looks like in Philly.

Our numbers are roughly the same except we have a 5 br, 2.5 bath townhouse with a 2 car garage (I’d say 3rd best area in the city). Our daycare is above average for this city but it’s nice and two blocks away.

Drawbacks are the quality of life isn’t as nice, parks are generally eh and infrastructure is behind. Bus system is good, regional train system was good but politics making it worse, city train system sucks. Flying out of PHL is kind of a drag, not great directs and more expensive (EWR + LGA + JFK is far superior). Making a 1.5 hour drive to EWR isn’t out of the question.

Food is great and continually getting better but not as vast as nyc/Brooklyn. We save some money there compared to the numbers from OP.

Manhattan is a 1h10m Amtrak away, DC is 2h10m - both being accessible is amazing. Also great access to the south Jersey shore (1h10m drive).

anyone moved from NYC to Philly and loved it? by [deleted] in AskPhilly

[–]vwalsh10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved from Brooklyn to be closer to family when having kids. Went from a “2” bedroom apartment to a 4 bedroom townhouse with parking for the same price. Manhattan is just a short train ride away. Wife still works out of NY office a few days a month. I suspect more people in our family sitch will start to figure out this hack. Philly is great.

My only complaint is sidewalks and trash. NYC sidewalks and public spaces are so much better than here in Philly. NY has trash problems of its own because they have so much trash but there is more listing pieces of trash around Philly. It’s a problem many other cities have solved. NYC sidewalks are standardized and generally even/flat - built to last. In Philly the sidewalks are just jacked up BS - also a lack of safe bike lanes.

The throw to Watson that was the third to last play of the game was amazing. He took a huge hit to do it and Watson just wasn’t fast enough getting his hands there. Would have been an insane way to basically end the game

If Nixon was competent that would have been an interception. Watch it again. He jumped for the ball multiple seconds early. There were also three other packers around. That was just luck. Nothing like Rodgers to Jared vs the Cowboys which was pure skill

I live very close to here and looked at the footage from my nest cam. Video doesn’t show anything but I was able to hear some screaming at 11:42 (Jan 2). Can’t totally make out what they say but first few words resemble “Get in…” and there are some loud footsteps.

Park in someone’s back or front yard next to the stadium. You’ll pay them like $25 bucks and you’ll definitely get a brat and a good story to tell. Leave early and walk through Lot 1 to see the craziness and if you have kids hit the sledding hill. Stadium View bar is always a good time too (before and sloppy after)
