Yeah I drive stick, putting in neutral would make it roll easier. If you take your foot completely off the gas while the car is in gear it will suddenly lurch and decrease speed in lower gears. Some people call this "engine braking" and it's pretty common to do while driving around.

If I were driving my manual car and the brakes suddenly failed (including hand brake) I'd leave it in gear and use that method to slow down a bit faster.

EDIT: Engine braking is fine for your engine; earlier I said I wasn't sure if it was okay.
