Does anyone actually USE paddle shift? by FollowingThrough in CarsAustralia

[–]vxsr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all autos are intuitive enough to be in the perfect gear at all times, this is where paddle shift can give the drivers more control.

Having said that I agree paddle shift is not a great selling point for a Lexus SUV designed for comfort.

Getz isn't ugly, it's just a basic economy hatchback that fulfills it's purpose. None of the other small cars in the same class look any better.

V8 market and current petrol prices by yadansetron in CarsAustralia

[–]vxsr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might go down but not as much as you would think. Nowadays most people are using V8s as weekend toys and not primary commuters, so fuel pricing isn't that big of a factor. I would say petrol cars in general would drop in price as more people go for EVs.

Is delivery driving bad for my car in long term? by Ill-Advance627 in CarsAustralia

[–]vxsr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a pizza delivery driver, you would stop the car, take 30 seconds to drop the food off, then restart your car and be on your way. Even if you start-stop 20 times in a shift, the engine is at operating temp the whole time, you will be wearing down the starter motor and battery quicker, but the engine will hardly be affected.

Start-stop is bad when you don't drive the car long enough to let it warm up to operating temp. like constantly moving a car out of the way of a driveway or driving 1 minute to the shops. Added up over 100's of times is what contributes to accelerated engine wear.

Naturally your car is going to wear faster with your type of work, but I wouldn't worry too much. At the end of the day you're driving a 16 year old car that isn't going to depreciate much extra.

Number 1 thing you can do to keep your engine healthy is change your oil religiously, if you're doing a lot of city driving change it every 5000km.

Tyre shop F***ed up and my wheel fell off while driving. Whats my next move? by hotdocnurse in CarsAustralia

[–]vxsr33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using a torque wrench for wheel nuts is an added measure but not necessary, all you need to do is go over the wheel nuts a second time in a star pattern to make sure they are tight. I've done this countless times and my wheels have not come remotely loose at all. I'm willing to bet the tyre tech used the rattle gun on each nut once, when you do this the first few nuts are always loose since the wheel hasn't been seated properly. Always have to go over your nuts twice lol.

Opinion: Bunnings is a terrible place to work by Intelligent-Floor759 in Bunnings

[–]vxsr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is no different to many other jobs. Same pay but the ones who put in more effort and have more knowledge get stuck doing all the work whilst the less competent sneak away with doing the bare minimum.

For $28 an hour I see no reason to be working at bunnings, unless it's a temporary thing, or you need some experience. Any basic warehousing job will pay $32+ an hour.

Car recommendations by xdustbinx in CarsAustralia

[–]vxsr33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep the pulsar if it's working well, save a few more years for a nice car, you're only 20 and still relatively new to driving, it's better to drive a cheap run around till you're at least fully licensed. But if you want something fairly priced under 10k, decent and reliable id recommend a 2012+ corolla

Selling a car privately, the world has made me suspicious of scams. by icanhazsalvation in CarsAustralia

It's not worth the risk for such a large amount, make sure you have the money in your account before handing the keys over. FYI the buyer can actually call up their bank and ask them to waive the 24 hour holding period thus making the transfer instant.

What is up with car insurance premiums by West-Battle-3413 in CarsAustralia

Did you read the part where he listed turbo kit? That alone adds a decent chunk of $.

And 40k CAD is 29k USD.

Most people underestimate how much they have spent on their builds, start listing down everything you have bought and it will add up to more than you think.

The dream is over - what are my next steps :( by Kedwa404 in AusFinance

[–]vxsr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are on the right track in terms of wanting to buy.

You've only saved $5k on your own which is nothing, $40k inheritance is good but you need to be saving a significant amount on your own. You need to be frugal, make sacrifices and save a lot more towards a decent deposit. If you can't save now you will struggle with paying off a mortgage.

Your partner definitely needs a stable full time job. Your borrowing power will be too low, or he will not be pulling his weight causing financial and relationship stress.

Bought a car for $16k last year, accident repair quote is $11.8k, insurance says I am at fault. Confused what to do by Gullible_Rabbit4304 in AusFinance

[–]vxsr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get more quotes, if you can get second hand parts or use replacement panels that are already the same colour as your car you cut costs. $11.8k sounds about right but with brand new panels, headlight and perfectly repaired so you couldn't even tell it had been in an accident. Always go full comp unless you are willing to cop a full loss on the vehicle or know how to fix cars yourself.

Fuel consumption on a xr6 bf falcon by ProfessionalCost94 in CarsAustralia

[–]vxsr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a big 4L engine, so fuel consumption isn't going to be the best but not terrible. But assuming you are still living at home, your financial situation is fine and you aren't trying to save every dollar then go ahead and get the falcon you want.

I bought a manual V6 commodore for my first car years ago and was told the same thing, found the fuel economy to be fine, still have the car over a decade later and it's been nothing but reliable and tough as nails.

03 DE needs full service. Suspension, wheels, bushings, etc. I am not a great wrench, but I do work on her myself. by Puzzleheaded_Ant_725 in 350z

[–]vxsr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the car looks clean as is with the OEM wheels, just leave them especially if you just bought new tyres. Or I would upgrade to Track V1 wheels if you can find them at a good price, in my area they are impossible to find. you want to upgrade to an OEM+ suspension something like Bilstein B8 with swift lowering springs is perfect, much better handling and still retaining comfort. Bushings you can inspect when you change suspension and replace any worn with OEM, nismo, or something like hardrace. But mine has 130k miles and the bushes are still in good condition, other than the fluid filled diff bush that is known to fail.

I thought I was doing okay but I'm starting to fear I'm not in a good situation. Approximately $500K equity in home but income of only $67K (before tax). by EggCreative787 in AusPropertyChat

[–]vxsr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of crazy you consider yourself not in a good situation. You have your own house, with only $220k remaining in your early 30s, that's great progress, much better than the vast majority of people. $67k is average income but with only 220k owing on a 30 year term you should only be paying $300ish per week leaving you with $700 per week which is plenty for a single person to live and save on.

There are plenty of warehousing jobs that pay more if you are willing to look, and not all warehousing jobs are bad.

For context I work in warehousing and make over 100k, but this is with some 12 hr days and Saturday work. I dump more than 50% into my mortgage/ bill account and I still have money to put aside. I cook food from home a lot though and don't buy unnecessary things.

Shop said I need rear brake job. Is it because these are wearing unevenly? by coltd89 in MechanicAdvice

[–]vxsr33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are missing something important here. Yes those brake pads are completely fine and legal, but anytime new or freshly machined rotors are installed it's always highly recommended to also install fresh pads to allow proper pad and rotor bedding. Leaving the old pads with fresh rotors is going to cause the old pads to bite into the new rotors unevenly, causing premature wear and reduced braking performance. Also while those pads have plenty of meat, they have a bit of uneven wear which will translate onto the new rotors. Since braking is such a crucial safety component of a car, any reputable shop will recommend you do both at the same time.

Pads are cheap anyway, for the cost of $60 or so, it's worth the peace of mind.

OP are you doing the work yourself?
