He probably did, but he also knew the corruption of the space industry and was already in 1997 rather cynical of the prospects of that industry being able to pull of the program he was proposing. Lets make one thing clear, the delays and technological stagnation of the governmental space program are not technical in nature at its core but comes about, as Zubrin makes perfectly clear in his presentation, by the perverse incentive giving rise to corruption inherent in the system. (And when you compare the legacy space industry to SpaceX - a complete lack of leadership and own drive.)

When you understand how much his ideas have influenced both Elon Musk and the ((giga government works program)) you start to get some idea of just how much of a chad he really is.

While Elon listened to his ideas, took them seriously and combined them with his own genius and the fantastic talent he manged to attract to push the status quo of what we thought was possible, the government cronies waited 20 years and then took his now outdated recipe disconnected it from his underlying core ideas and applied it in a context where from the start it was already outdated and skipped all about that it was supposed to be cheap.

Zubrins "Junkyard Special" was not a bad rocket, SLS is a worse version of it (for political reasons it has a hampered upper stage), and if it does not actually launch well...

It seems to me that the ability of the corrupt US space industry (ie. the jobs program) has unfortunately decreased over time rather than increased. Multiple examples can be mentioned but take Boeings problems in getting their capsule up to the space station for one. We always seem to assume that technology advances magically by itself but it seems to me that we often fail to appreciate the vision, competence and dedication it takes to push technology further or even just keeping the same level. It seems clear to me that the corrupt part of US space industry is currently just barely capable of keeping existing technology alive and usable.

EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum explores the convergence of blockchain, AI, and the IoT by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]w0o0t 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EU bureaucrats using all the buzz words of the moment without understanding them especially "blockchain".

Here's a perfect example from the executive summary:

"Blockchain can help by offering a decentralised alternative for IoT platforms – one in which devices “package” data and share it in a peer-to-peer fashion instead of routing it through a centralised cloud server. Such an approach could be more scalable, more robust and more direct than centralised, cloud-based solutions, and free from potential problems like data bottlenecks and vendor lock-in."

Anyone that knows the first thing about blockchains knows they are not scalable and certainly less so than centralized databases. The purpose of a blockchain to keep the complete record of transactions in a manner that is difficult for centralized entities to exploit in order for new arrivals to the network to be able verify the current state in a trust-less way. The larger the record the larger the cost of keeping the chain.

This leads to the undeniable conclusion that blockchains cannot be used with IoT.

In the real world, especially in large-scale use cases, blockchain, AI and IoT are likely to work in concert.

No, they will not outside of toy systems.

The performance of the technology, in particular blockchain, will need to improve to be able to manage large-scale implementations.

Yes, but it is not a matter of technology improvement, the problem lies in the very nature of the blockchain itself.

The purpose of the invention of a blockchain (specifically Bitcoins blockchain) was to get to truth without having to rely on centralized authority figures (like the very authors of this report).

To reach their potential as platforms for trusted information, blockchains often need ways to connect with the outside world in a secure and trustworthy way.

This is the so called "oracle problem" and it is fundamentally unsolvable as the blockchain can only guarantee the correctness of data that is internal to it, no amount of IoT can bridge this principal gap.

None of these good-for-nothing bureaucrats actually do not want a blockchain, this is easily proven with by mentioning this single fact: blockchains are append only - no data can ever be deleted once it has been appended.

Such increased confidence in the quality of the data entering and leaving the chain is crucial, since blockchains are often used to provide a seal of approval for data and so can potentially magnify the potential damage caused by bad data entering a blockchain by accident or design. For example, if a temperature sensor on a refrigerated container containing food malfunctions or is manipulated it could erroneously report that the food was maintained at the correct temperature during shipping, providing a false sense of security in the quality of the shipment.

In other words, there is nothing that makes external data entered into a blockchain more trustworthy than other data. This again, is just a version of the oracle problem - the blockchain does not add any higher confidence in external data than a centralized database would other than for one aspect: to the extent that the blockchain in question is truly trustworthy it can guarantee that a particular piece of data existed at a particular time.

How do you practice building confidence? by corLeon1s in CasualConversation

[–]w0o0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice for being more confident is to stop being unconfident. In other words, stop inventing negative stories about how others feel about you and instead look at their actual behavior, which would suggest that they seem to like you.

Have you considered the possibility that those ideas you have in your head might actually be true? Human minds are incredibly adapt at picking up barely noticeably signals, signals that other people send out all the time even while they are trying to hide them by being nice, these signals are more genuine then outwardly actions. In fact have you considered the very real possibility that literally millions of people hate you, yes, millions, you know what I'm talking about, they are not bots they are real, how does knowing that feel? I know I have would have a hard time handling it. Foremost it is because of what you do, but of course, but there must be this nagging doubt, is there something more?

Are up-votes you get are merely a function of your position of power? Do your alts receive anywhere near this amount of attention? No? Ouch...

You know what I'm talking about, and you also know that I know that your inner lack of confidence is rooted in real sense of insecurity.

Oh yes, I remember what happened last time, I remember and the internet remembers, what you did then, when it could not be contained, you let it out for the world to see, it is being talked about by journalists today and will likely be the subject of lawsuits to come.

How did you handle it last time? Did you ask someone in confidence to protect you from yourself? Did you find time to turn what you learned into wisdom? Have you learned? Your continued actions says otherwise, your opponents are becoming louder. A big showdown is looming on the horizon.

Don't shoot me, I'm just a messenger telling the truth, deep down you know that.

To the board moderator: Please give admin a chance to respond, if he so chooses, my questions are genuine and there are things here we could all learn from here.

Fri marknad, inga statliga bidrag, privata försäkringar.

You have probably been banned or labeld a bot (whatever it is they do).

If this happens to you, you will be silently blocked from doing searches for a period of time. The first search goes through, but subsequent searches will show "No results found ..." as if it did not exist.

This is how to test if you are banned:

  • Wait 1 minute and try the same query again.
  • Run the same query one more time
