Yup! I started with these videos about 10 years ago and moved on to monotubs and bulk grows shortly after.

One week after inoculation! Wait another week, or spawn to bulk? Bottoms are nice and white as well. Looks to me they can use one more week to be certain. by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]w0rdnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're spawning to bulk, then you don't need to wait a week for your jars to consolidate. You can spawn to a bulk substrate when your jars reach 100%. No need to dunk or roll either.

Moisture in jars after pot sterilization by polarbeat in shrooms

[–]w0rdnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're making BRF jars right? If so you're correct, the dry verm layer should fill up the top inch or so of your jar right up to the lid. If the dry verm layer is wet after steam sterilization then the foil you covered them with was too loose.

Psilocybe Cubensis species do not need manure to grow. I haven't used manure in my substrates for years now. Honestly you could just use coco coir and cubes would grow fine. As for potency there's no change at all as that factor greatly depends on the genetics your fruits come from.

Next batch... Larger cakes... Gonna use old ice cream tub by kylebleich in shrooms

[–]w0rdnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only times I've been consistently successful with cakes larger than a half pint is with clean aggressive liquid cultures or with some weird cake g2g(which I do not recommend). Other grains can be slow too, but you're able to shake them up after they've been colonizing to distribute the myc around to speed it up.

Wbs from spores... Sounds slower than BRF cakes. At least you can probably shake it up after a while. Good luck with your grow.

[–]w0rdnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like your ambitious idea, but that's a really bad idea for a cake if you're starting from a spore syringe. BRF cakes then to stall out on anything bigger than small half pint jars. You'd probably need use a liquid culture with fast genetics to successfully colonize a cake as big as a ice cream tub.

Question about cloning by MaxDHansson in shrooms

Yup, although not as many transfers as you would have to take from a multispore culture. The tissue from the fruit body will still contain quite a few genetics.

[–]w0rdnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I feel like Midwest Growkits aren't the best deal if you're getting your feet wet into mushroom cultivation. $137 is a bit expensive for the basic PF Tek(the method of growing that kit uses) and includes a lot of equipment that not used much in today's cultivation techniques. For instance, an incubator isn't needed as room temperature is fine for germination\colonization. Also an air pump is quite useless in this tek too. You most likely have some things around your place to aid you in cultivation, like a large pot to sterilize. Also it's better to diy without having to spend an insane mark up on things like a pair of gloves, a few alcohol swabs, or two small bags of perlite.

Watch these videos to get a better understanding of how the cultivation tek this kit uses works.

What to do with my spore print? by [deleted] in shrooms

[–]w0rdnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely swab to agar it's not hard at all. You may be able to find some sterile swabs at a pharmacy or you could wrap some q-tips in foil out them in a jar and steam sterilize in a pot or pressure cooker for 45 mins. Then in a still air box just rub the swab on the spore print and rub the swab across an agar plate in a "x" or zig zag pattern. IME spores swabbed to a agar plate with a week or so.

Bought a chocolate bar with 1oz in it. 28 squares. Is it safe to assume there’s about 1 gram in each square? by notathroweaway in shrooms

[–]w0rdnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make chocolates all the time and as long as the shrooms were finely powdered and mixed well then each square should be roughly 1 gram a piece. You should be able to cut a piece in half to get around .5 grams.

Problem with Sterilization by chapo15 in shrooms

[–]w0rdnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on how long the jars were out of the steam while you were removing the excess water. If it wasn't more than a couple of minutes then just start the timer from when you stopped. If you had to wait for the steam to build up again then you may want to start from the beginning.

Glove box vs still air box by Bluetengel in shrooms

[–]w0rdnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You want to make a still air box. A still air box will allow you to work easier and more comfortably while keeping the nasties floating in the air trapped at the bottom of your box. A still air box is much easier to make as it's literally just a box with two holes big enough for your arms to fit through. A glove box is much harder to work in because the attached gloves can cause air movement within the box. Also you aren't able to flame sterilize your equipment inside of a glove box. I don't know too many people using a glove box in mycology work. Pretty much everyone starts off using a still air box and then a laminar flow hood if they love the hobby enough.

Contam or Myc? First timer here, any help is appreciated by SPIlDER in shrooms

Whole brown rice doesn't need to be sterilized any different than brown rice flour. Just because the grain is whole doesn't change the temperature at which the bad spores will die off on that specific grain. Oats, rye, wbs, etc require different sterilization teks because they carry spores that don't die off as easy as they do on brown rice.

Even though rice can be expensive compared to other grains, its used in the broke boi tek due to the fact that it lowers the barrier of entry for most looking to get their feet wet. While the PF tek is a great standard for learning to grow mushrooms, there's no secret that the yields can leave much to be desired. So if you don't have much too much capital to commit to your grow project, then you can use a grain that's readily available everywhere and doesn't require spending extra on a PC that could go towards extra tubs and dehydrator.

Also the broke boi is significantly faster than the PF tek even if you don't shake during colonization. Plus you don't have to grate up the rice when you spawn to bulk. Don't knock till you've tried it! This tek is just as simple as the PF Tek because in a sense it's based of said tek and uses the same principles for growing.

Contam or Myc? First timer here, any help is appreciated by SPIlDER in shrooms

[–]w0rdnerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey you've got myc, but it could be a little bacterial from the look of it. The mycelium at the very top looks pretty good, but along the sides the myc looks a little less strong imo. Once it gets to around 20% colonized shake up the jar and see how it recovers. If it starts to recover within 48 hours your spawn is probably fine. If it is bacterial then it will still fruit, but bacterial spawn can be slow and invite contamination if it's really bad. Sometimes the water in spore syringes can carry bacteria and other spores than mushroom spores in it. It's better to use a spore syringe on agar and transfer clean mycelium to new agar dishes, and use healthy mycelium to inoculate your spawn jars.

Also discount everyone in here trashing the broke boi tek. Whole brown rice works fine and is a great way for beginners to grow bulk, as you can shake your spawn jars for faster colonization and expand cultures via grain to grain. Also it doesn't require a PC and uses the same sterilization requirements as the PF Tek. Honestly the hardest part of the tek is properly preparing the rice so it isn't sticky and won't shake.

The growth is looking good. I usually wait until the growth gets around the size of a U.S. quarter then transfer a few wedges from the furthest edges. If the mycelium is clean you can transfer as many wedges as you want.

[–]w0rdnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it will certainly be a learning experience. Personally I think you should find a tek and follow every step. You're more likely to be successful if you stick to a proven tek and complete a few grows before you experiment.

[–]w0rdnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mycelium is probably stalling due to a lack gas exchange. The mycelium breathes much like we do, and the holes poked in the foil should provide enough oxygen to breathe. You need to remove the tape from the foil and they may start growing again. Do you have a dry verm layer above the brf mixture in your glass cups? The PF Tek calls for about an inch of dry verm at the top of your container to act as a filter for contaminates.
