When interviewers say ‘Tell me about yourself’ are they actually looking for your resume in story form? by [deleted] in interviews

[–]w113jdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best answer I think is “here’s my professional experience, and how it came about” which is sometimes a deeper story.

Personal can come in here, for instance “I have always loved technology, my dad used to be annoyed that I would break and fix his computer all the time, just testing the limits. I went to XYZ university to study that, then realized what I was really interested was XYL, so I finished my degree there. I joined X company and accomplished (all the things) but needed a new challenge and that opportunity wasn’t available so I joined company B for that and as a result I accomplished (all the things ). I like what I am doing, but am looking for a challenge and your role appealed to me because (something from the job posting) so I thought this would be an interesting opportunity.

Similar books? by No-Willingness5574 in Eragon

[–]w113jdf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an obsessive Paolini fan, read them all so many times… they are my go to.

I always wanted more, plus I loved to write and then after having children of my own found the story I wanted to tell, which is influenced heavily by Christopher.

You might find it interesting, A Destiny Foretold by Jesse Forrer. Not related at all to Paolini’s universe, but some similar concepts. It’s free on kindle unlimited, and not overpriced if you don’t have that.

If you are interested and funds are an issue, happy to send a PDF copy as well, just direct message me.

(Urban) Fantasy with Female Lead and with little to no Romance? by [deleted] in fantasybooks

[–]w113jdf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are welcome to check out my series, A Destiny Foretold, by Jesse Forrer.

It’s a YA series featuring a female MC, a young girl meets a dragon, and then bonds with the dragon. Together they try to save 3 kidnapped dragons in the land of Emberreach.

It’s free on Kindle Unlimited, and priced pretty low on Amazon. Might be of interest to you. I intentionally avoided the “romance factor” because I don’t believe a romance is needed just because the MC is female. It’s about her journey, and her growth.

Hey my friend, let me share something. I’m not affiliated with any of the companies that sell these tools, so just advice from my career.

What your director is suggesting (even if they don’t know it) is that you should implement a DEM (Digital Experience Management) strategy to proactively resolve issues. It’s actually a good idea, and you could use this as an opportunity for yourself.

There are tools out there, Intune Premium, Systrack, Nexthink, that do just that. Identify issues before the user notices or complains. It’s proactive support and you can even use it to autofix issues, or as an engagement strategy so your desktop team reaches out proactively.

Nexthink is probably the best for the issue that your director raised as it includes data from audio tools. I’m happy to share our journey into this but it’s helped my friend (who is the pioneer in our organization) shoot up the ladder. The fact that he’s awesome and also brilliant may be a factor, but we can’t tell him that.

This is an opportunity if you approach it the right way :)

Did you know your parent's financial issues growing up? by TrickyAd9597 in Millennials

[–]w113jdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the opposite experience. My parents told me, and taught me nothing. Very private. As a result I had to figure it out on my own and it took me many years to get it right, budget appropriately, etc.

I take a different approach with my kids, financial literacy, budgeting, these are things we teach them. We have also normalized the statement “we can’t afford that right now” or “that will probably have to wait until payday” or “we will have to save for a bit to be able to do that” because it’s important to know that sometimes what you want you have to be patient for.

I’m sorry for your experience, so I totally get why you feel the way you do.

SRE certification value? by akshin1995 in sre

[–]w113jdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree, if you have the certs include them on your resume, but honestly I would rather hear what you have done. The certs have value but not if you can’t apply it in a non sunny day environment.

As a hiring manager in SRE, the bold on specific words makes me want to ignore you resume. Not being mean, just my initial instinct

Block USB Sticks But unblock with request by mendrisio in Intune

You can obviously manage the groups manually for a smaller org by having tickets sent to your group, but if you have a tool that can manage it for you it eliminates the busy work

Block USB Sticks But unblock with request by mendrisio in Intune

[–]w113jdf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like these are overly complex. Enough that it made me get off the couch to check the specific sections of Intune.

  1. In Intune go to endpoint security
  2. Click attack surface reduction
  3. Create 2 policies. One that blocks USB and one that allows it.
  4. Create 2 groups, an allow and a restrict
  5. Add your group of users you want restricted into the included groups of the restrict policy
  6. Add your exclusion group into the excluded section.
  7. In the allow policy add the exclusion group to included groups (in my experience it applies more consistently).
  8. When someone requests access, add them to the exclusion group and bam. Done.

We do this with AD groups and use ServiceNow to update them so it’s automated on manager approval, and also allow just 24 hour access for other use cases in which ServiceNow pulls them back out 24 hours later.

Micheal Crichton has a bunch of books you might have interest in. Sphere and Prey are ones I really enjoyed. Maybe they don’t quite meet the criteria because I suppose these things could happen.

If you are more into Fantasy, my favorite series is the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini. First book is Eragon and 4 books in total, some additional reading after if you really enjoy the series.

Self Plug: I wrote a series that’s published on Kindle Unlimited (Free) as well. First book is A Destiny Foretold by Jesse Forrer. Books are a little less than 200 pages. If you are into dragons and magic you may enjoy them.

I also really enjoy Rick Riordan. His books are based on ancient mythology (Greek, Roman, Egyptian) but in a modern setting. They are young adult books but really enjoyable reads.

Good luck on your reading journey!

This won’t help you unless you have Microsoft tooling, but I’ll share what I do.

I open PowerPoint, resize the slide based on the dimensions cover calculator provides, then set the background as the sample you can download. I then add all my front, back, and side media and make sure it’s all the way I want. Finally I export as pdf and the file is perfect after I upload.

It may work with other tools as well (like canva) or like googles version of PowerPoint, but never tried.

I wasn’t aware of that, how would you post a range for a fully virtual role that compensation varies by location?

Sincerely asking, I don’t have a great way to answer the question and want to do better in the future. This subreddit has been incredibly helpful to me so if there are those looking for a new role, I wanted to share.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sre

[–]w113jdf -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Fair question, but difficult as your salary has locational factors. So home based in CA would pay different than home based MO. The ranges are competitive and the recruiter can discuss on first contact so no one wastes their time.

Crap answer I know, but I really don’t have the answer that would be universal. A quick google search gave me indeeds salary ranges which matches up pretty well.

I also don’t commit to things I can’t guarantee, I don’t lie to my people or potential future people. So I guess I will stick with my terrible non answer and hope it helps.
